Making OS X usefulMaking OS X useful 03/13/2003 10:22 AM This article on taming the dock looks like the solution to my frustration with OS X. I arrange my dock in much the same way shown here, with my favorite apps on one side, and the running apps on the other (though, still on the default dock), but I'm constantly hitting the wrong icon when the dock ballons up on mouseover, and I can never remember where exactly I need to point to launch an app. I'm giving this a go and seeing how it works out. Funny how it looks a little bit like the windows start bar, isn't it? Making RSS ScaleMaking RSS Scale 09/06/2004 10:26 AM I've been meaning to write about this since I saw a one-page article on the subject of RSS clogging websites' bandwidth in NewScientist back in June. But it wasn't until I saw this Slashdot story on the same subject that I knew I had to get my thoughts down. A lot of sites are suffering from a big problem — they are being systematically hammered by RSS newsreaders for new material at regular intervals. When I first came across RSS around two years ago and did some reading up on it, it sounded like another interesting protocol for a nonproblem. I wondered what was wrong with just refreshing a "What's new?" page. (I have a natural scepticism towards new and exotic protocols.) Nonetheless, after RSS established a niche in the realm of informing us, rolling news style, of new network content, I recognised its usefulness in this situation. I did still feel that its design was suboptimal, no matter how many thousands of bloggers now relied on it. Making FiendsMaking Fiends 03/08/2004 11:12 PM Kick Ass Flash Cartoon Series .. I said, "The WHAT?" He says, "The 'reality-based community'.". Making lifeMaking life 04/28/2004 05:27 PM The current issue of Scientific American features a mind-blowing article by W. Wayt Gibbs about "synthetic biology," the effort to create designer organisms from the bottom up: "This nascent field has three major goals: One, learn about life by building it, rather than by tearing it apart. Two, make genetic engineering worthy of its name--a discipline that continuously improves by standardizing its previous creations and recombining them to make new and more sophisticated systems. And three, stretch the boundaries of life and of machines until the two overlap to yield truly programmable organisms. Already TNT-detecting and artemisinin-producing microbes seem within reach. The current prototypes are relatively primitive, but the vision is undeniably grand: think of it as Life, version 2.0."Link What's Making BlognewsWhat's Making Blognews 04/28/2004 10:04 AM seems like another blogdex clone, i can't tell what's unique about this one We're Not Making This Up... He seems to have been a good-hearted man who went to Iraq because he wanted to help rebuild the country. But why is it the top headline in newspapers around the country? If the Iraqis had murdered a civilian hostage, the media certainly would have paid attention, but I doubt it would have been the lead story. After all, Berg's going missing on April 9 wasn't deemed newsworthy. Had the Iraqis murdered a hostage by beheading him, the savagery of the act would have made the story more newsworthy, especially in comparison...
