Google Hacks /. Reviewed

Google Hacks /. Reviewed 03/19/2003 10:24 PM
I woke up to a fabulous / . review of Google Hacks.
Google Hacks by Tara Calishain and Rael Dornfest and published by O'Reilly will appeal to an even wider audience, I can imagine buying this for friends who haven't cottoned on to 'net searching at all and friends who complain "Google returns too many sites." People who are afraid to code shouldn't be put off by the "Hacks" in the title: O'Reilly have obviously taken a wider meaning of "hack" than just a neat piece of code. This book is a marvelous compendium of tips and tricks for Google, ranging from simple ways of getting the search results you want, through using Google's newer services such as phone books and image search, all the way to advanced ways of using scrapers and the Google API.
O'Reilly just posted some of the Google Hacks online in their entirety. I chose one of my favourites, "NoXML, Another SOAP::Lite Alternative".

Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail

Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail 05/26/2004 01:35 PM
Last month there was a lot of talk about the somewhat clueless move by a California politician to create a law that would ban Google's Gmail offering, despite the fact that it was completely optional to use. It appears that enough people (probably including those at Google itself) sat down with State Senator Liz Figueroa to explain how email works, and have convinced her to tone down the bill so that it now allows Gmail. That's right, the anti-Gmail bill now has loopholes that specifically allow Gmail. In other words, Senator Figueroa seems to have realized just how pointless the bill was in the first place and is trying to save face by adjusting it so that it still seems to have a purpose: banning a bunch of things that no one was doing, like having humans read the content of your emails to put in advertising.

Nader: It is "censorship" to say "I
shouldn't run"
02/10/2004 02:53 AM
I realized today just how angry I remain at Ralph Nader, former hero of mine, while listening to him on NPR today. Apparently, Mr. Nader is considering another run for president. When pressed quite effectively by Melissa Block to respond to the many many many who are begging him not to run, including the Na tion, Mr. Nader responded that such a request was "censorship." This man is truly outrageous. The only thing a Nader candidacy would do is increase the chance that Bush will be reelected. This man has become unsafe -- to himself, and to the nation. If he has friends, they should be his friend and stop him from this. Which got me thinking: If you believe that but for Nader's not withdrawing in the last moments before the 2000 election, Bush would not have been elected (which is true), and you believe that a Bush presidency has caused great harm -- to the nation, to the environment, and to the families of soldiers lost in Iraq (which is also true), then which has been more harmful to society: The Corvair or its enemy?
Nader0004.png
And what would we say of a car company that released a Corvair again? And oh, by the way, is it "censorship" to say you should not run, Mr. Nader? No, it is not. It is asking you to do what you have asked corporate America to do for your whole life -- take responsibility for the consequences of your actions. When I hear you explain why you did not cause the election of George Bush, you sound like a tobacco executive. And when you increase the risk of a second term for President Bush, you are behaving worse than an auto executive from the 1960s -- the harm will be the same, but at least profit is taxed.

The increased pressure for Nader to support Camejo's position and renounce a spate of recent donations from wealthy backers of President Bush came after The Chronicle reported Friday that 1 in 10 of Nader's biggest contributors as of May 31 also were major donors to the president's re- election campaign and the Republican Party.
  • It's been obvious for some time that Ralph Nader's ego trip is a gift from heaven for the people who most loathe everything he stands for. Now we see that the gifts go both ways. The right wingers sending money to Nader know exactly what they're trying to do. Whether Nader admits it or not, so does he. His spoiler candidacy may be helped, but his place in history just keeps on sinking. Sad.

    two questions for Mr. Nader

two questions for Mr. Nader 03/06/2004 01:51 AM
Ralph Nader has apparently decided to run for President. So says his website, votenader.org (which doesn't seem to render well on Mac browsers, but which my Dad reports renders quite well on a Windows machine. Don't look for Ralph's presidential campaign at Nader2004.org. That domain has been captured by a pro-Nader Nader-critic (which I count myself as), and is a graphic version of the argument I made earlier.) This is obviously depressing to folks like me who, while admirers of the good that Nader did in the world, and admirers of more of his policies than the other candidates in the race, believe the consequence of his being in this race will simple be to increase the probability that President Bush will have a second term. So two questions for Mr. Nader: (1) Do you agree that even if it would be best if you were President, it would be second best if a Democrat were President rather than President Bush? (2) If so, then will you promise that if 2000 repeats itself -- if it is clear that you are not going to be elected president, but probable that votes for you will deny the Democrat of the Presidency -- then you will ask your supporters to vote for someone else? Because if Mr. Nader can answer both questions "yes," then I'm all for his candidacy. His views, his integrity, and (except for one important gap) his judgment certainly deserve to stand on the stage with any Democrat, and with President Bush.

Should Kerry draft Nader? 05/25/2004 10:22 AM
John Gilmore sez, "If Kerry had the sense to pick Nader as his VP, they'd unify the anti-Bush ranks and eliminate the chance of a significant protest vote. Nader polls at 4%, which would put Kerry over the top. Independent voters have noticed the remarkably similar platforms of Bush and Kerry re the Iraq war (they're for it), Guantanamo (they're for indefinite imprisonment without judicial review), the Patriot Act (they're for it), and many other issues like the drug war (they're for it). If independents could vote at least one honest person into one party's administration, known for blowing the whistle when needed, they would be a lot more inclined to do so."
The Washington Post did a poll and said ... It found Bush in a dead heat with Democratic candidate Massachusetts Senator John Kerry in the presidential race.

Forty-six percent of registered voters said they would vote for Bush if the election were held today; 46 percent said they would support Kerry and 4 percent said they would back independent Ralph Nader, the poll said.

Ralph Nader Running Again? 02/10/2004 02:41 AM
So the great Ralph Nader is "exploring" another run for president. Nader, whose votes put Bush over the top in 2000, claims to want your input. I suspect he's already made up his mind to run. This guy would obviously rather let the Bush clique finish the job it's already started than put his own ego on hold. But are his 2000 supporters that out of touch with reality?
