Apple Sells 20% of 802.11g Products

Apple Sells 20% of 802.11g Products 02/19/2004 12:04 AM
BusinessWeek columnist notes that Apple's aggressive Wi-Fi promotion has brought them 20 percent global 802.11g marketshare and huge margins: Alex Salkever points out that Apple earned nearly $150 million from Wi-Fi in 2003 and talks about how Apple's managed to keep its premium margins. With increasing ease and cheaper alternatives ($75 for an equivalent Linksys WRT54G versus $200 to $250 for the Apple unit), Salkever predicts eroding markets that will force Apple to offer more features for fewer dollars. Interestingly side note: Salkever is using In-Stat/MDR numbers which shows Apple at 20 percent of worldwide unit volumes or $150 million in sales, above Linksys. Numbers reported by News.com from Synergy Research don't show Apple in the top five, and show Linksys revenue at $450 million. (I can't find In-Stat/MDR's breakout; their site shows just a few statistics that don't overlap with Synergy's.)...

Apple products go for a spin

Apple products go for a spin 04/14/2005 04:01 PM
Apple products have begun to show up in all kinds of vehicles making it easy to take them around town using many modes of transportation. From bicycles to BMWs, the iPod can be found making its way onto the road, and the Mac mini has even found its way onto the highway. At the Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco this past January, Apple announced it teamed up with Mercedes-Benz USA, Volvo, Nissan, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari to deliver iPod integration with their car stereo systems in 2005. When Mercedes-Benz USA announced its iPod Integration Kit, it became the first automaker to provide full iPod music navigation for drivers to listen to their entire iPod music collection through the car audio system. The integration kit also allows the user to select music by artist, album or playlist using multifunction controls on the steering wheel and the integrated multifunction display on the instrument cluster. BMW and MINI Cooper began providing integrated iPod solutions in 2004, enabling drivers to use iPods in BMW’s 3 Series, Z4 Roadster, X3 and X5 Sports Activity Vehicles and MINI Cooper by plugging the iPod into a cable located in the car’s glove compartment. Apple CEO Steve Jobs stated that one of the next frontiers for a seamless digital music experience is the car since "we all spend a lot of time driving" and the company's solution lets "iPod users enjoy their entire music collection" in their BMW or MINI. “Almost every car company in the world is working to integrate iPod into their cars in 2005,” Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing Philip Schiller said. “iPod customers want to take their entire music collection with them everywhere they go, including their car, so we’re excited to be able to work with so many leading automotive companies to provide customers with integrated solutions.” Following the release of Apple's Mac mini, vehicle restoration service, Classic Restorations, announced plans for installing the pint-sized computer in vehicle dashboards. Back in January, the New York-based company's president Melvin Benzaquen said there would be no standard pricing for the car installations, though past computer installations have cost between $1,500 to $7,000. So far the company has added a Mac mini to a classic 1969 MacNova SS, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and has given word on its latest restoration project, a Camino. A Mac mini was installed in the i-Car by Miami-based Audio Elite, who integrated the Mac mini into a Lexus. The car features two displays, a USB 2.0 and Firewire hub mounted below the dash, and the Mac mini mounted in a custom arm rest that has air vents and a plexiglas top that reveals the Apple logo. Gadget magazine T3 recently showed off a customised Yamaha EC-02 iPod-modified electric bike. The environmentally-friendly motorbike was custom-built for use with the iPod and features a clear snap-shut case on the top of the bike where the iPod sits snugly. The iPod is controlled through a set of controls positioned on the right handlebar. In addition to all the other cool features, the bike also has a stereo speaker built into the place that the gas tank normally sits. As for bicycles, Marware makes an iPod bike holder that mounts to bike handlebars and can be used with all Marware cases that use the Multidapt clip system. The holder allows the iPod to clip onto the bike handles placing it in clear view, for easy access to the menu and buttons while riding.

Thanks spks3707 for spotting this news first.

In its latest lawsuit seeking to clamp down on leaks, Apple Computer has added credibility to several hot rumors, including plans to offer a cheaper Macintosh and its own line of office software.

Apple on Tuesday sued the publisher of Mac enthusiast site Think Secret and other unnamed individuals, alleging that recent postings on the site contain Apple trade secrets, according to court documents seen by CNET News.com. The suit, filed Tuesday in the Superior Court of Santa Clara County, Calif., aims to identify who is leaking the information and to get an injunction preventing further release of trade secrets. However, in filing the suit, Apple identifies specific articles that contain trade secrets, indicating that at least parts of those reports are on the mark.

Apple files lawsuit over Internet leak
of new products
12/19/2004 02:50 PM
Apple Computer Inc. is suing anonymous people who leaked details about new products by posting information on the Internet, Reuters is reporting today. According to Reuters, Apple said in the seven-page civil complaint which it filed on December 13 that it did not know the "true names or capacities, whether individual, associate, corporate or otherwise," of the defendants. Once they have been discovered, the Cupertino, California-based company said it would amend the complaint. The complaint alleges that “an unidentified individual, acting alone or in concert with others, has recently misappropriated and disseminated through Web sites confidential information about an unreleased Apple product. To succeed, Apple must develop innovative products and bring those products to market in advance of its competitors. If Apple competitors were aware of Apple's future production information, those competitors could benefit economically from that knowledge by directing their product development or marketing to frustrate Apple's plans.” "Apple has filed a civil complaint against unnamed individuals who we believe stole our trade secrets and posted detailed information about an unannounced Apple product on the Internet," the company said in a statement provided to Reuters. "Apple's DNA is innovation and the protection of our trade secrets is crucial to our success."

Shuffle me up some products

Shuffle me up some products 04/04/2005 03:58 AM

The other day, I caught up with an old friend that now works in the movie business. He was always a bit of a tech guy, but it still surprised me when he pulled out an ipod shuffle as we drove to brunch in his car. Then I noticed how he used it. It was hooked to a cassette adapter in his stereo, but he held it like a wired remote control, controlling volume and next/previous tracks while he drove, never letting go of (or having to look down at) the shuffle.

I've had a shuffle for a couple weeks and I hadn't thought to use the device in that way. For him, it was both a controller/UI and the actual music player. There seems like limitless possible other ways you could use a shuffle that no products exist for quite yet, so someone create these:

- create a bluetooth adapter that plugs into the headphone jack and transmits audio to a cassette adapter with bluetooth. Then you could just velcro the shuffle to your steering wheel or gear shift and change tracks that way. Also, a call on your bluetooth cellphone could mute/pause the player.

- create a usb slot in aftermarket car stereos to act as a dock. You could use the stereo's display as the shuffle's non-existant display and charge it at the same time. Also, add USB/dock functionality to factory stereos so owners can use their existing steering wheel stereo controls. If really want to do something cool, also add a hard drive to car stereos with shuffle docks. Then I could just add 1Gb of my music collection each time I dock it. Eventually, I could fill a 20, 40, or 80Gb hard drive that way.

- put a camera into the shuffle. I'm surprised it didn't come with a tiny 640x480 cameraphone-style attachment for the usb end, and I'm surprised no one has offered one for sale yet.

- Go higher capacity with the shuffle. I suspect in 2 or 3 years we'll laugh at the dinky 1Gb shuffles, as we pop our 8, 20, and 40Gb shuffles into our car stereos like cartridges.

I also went running with my new shuffle for the first time and was amazed by how small and light it was. I put on my earbuds, slid the shuffle under my shirt, dropped it into the back pocket of my running tights and I couldn't even feel it. Stashing my keys is a bigger problem while running than a shuffle -- that's how compact and light it is.

I've tested myself running with and without music and I tend to run farther and faster and I feel better afterwards with it, so my shuffle will be going along with me on every run. I might just velcro a house key to the back of it and kill two birds with one stone.

PingID gets even MORE money

PingID gets even MORE money 04/13/2004 11:15 AM

Man - you sure need allot of money and high priced sales and marketing people to play in the 'enterprise' world!  Luckily for us humans - we come cheaper.

Ping Identity Completes First Round of Financing With Fidelity Ventures Pioneer in Federated Identity Management Closes Series A Round at $5.8 Million

April 13, 2004) - Ping Identity Corporation ( a leading provider of federated identity management solutions, today announced the closing of its first round of financing totaling $5.8 million. Fidelity Ventures joins lead investor General Catalyst Partners and several other private investors in this round. Ping Identity will use the investment to expand the company’s sales, marketing and product development efforts.  The company is also announcing that Dave Power, partner at Fidelity Ventures, will join the company’s board of directors.

“We’re extremely pleased to have Fidelity Ventures as a major investor. Fidelity not only understands the importance of identity federation, but is actively driving its adoption” said Andre Durand, CEO of Ping Identity Corporation.  “Web services applications have the potential to transform Internet commerce – but only if companies can overcome the barrier of identity theft.  Our mission is to eliminate this barrier by helping customers create and manage secure identity networks.”

Ping Identity’s federated identity solutions enable trading partners to exchange customer identity information securely over the Internet. Using federated identity, companies can provide more integrated services to customers, extend their business processes with trading partners, reduce the threat of identity theft, and lower the cost of security administration.  Ping Identity provides software and services to allow companies to implement federated identity solutions using industry standard protocols such as SAML,

Ping Identity is the sponsor of the leading open source federation project, SourceID (SourceID software is distributed by Ping Identity both in an open source version to promote the adoption of federated identity solutions, and in an enhanced, commercially supported version.  Ping Identity also provides services to ensure the integrity and legal foundation for identity networks, and has created the industry’s first identity network, PingID Network (www.pingid.net).

“We see a solid opportunity to assist Ping Identity with its go-to-market strategy," said Dave Power, partner at Fidelity Ventures.  ”Its open source project has created a large and growing base of potential customers for its commercial products and services.  In fact, many of Fidelity’s business partners are already working with SourceID technology.  Additionally, the management team’s extraordinary influence on the identity industry continues to expand through their customer and vendor partnerships, along with their efforts to educate and support standards for the industry.”
