Gmail Update
Gmail Update
04/10/2004 09:52 PMMark Pilgrim: Gmail accessibility "Gmail is the least web-like web
application I have ever seen." I have also received a Gmail account
and can concur. Gmail uses clever JavaScript tricks to try to come
close to the usability of a GUI email client -- and it comes quite
close. It's incredibly fast, it's got nice keyboard controls, and the
interface is simple and clean. But it doesn't have any of the features
of a web app. There are no URLs, the back button does not work, links
are faked, pages are coded in JavaScript and not HTML. It isn't a web
application, it's a GUI application that just happens to run inside a
Web browser....

01/16/2004 10:59 AMFirst learn computer science and all the theory. Next develop a

Carrette
Reminds me of the time the Malaysian government sent a software team
to Canada to do technology transfer for a flight simulator system.
After spending 2 years in Canada, they returned, and i asked one of
the team members how the Canadian coders designed this powerful and
complex system. I was expecting some detailed software methodology
involving multiple phases. He told me, "they just hire a bunch of
talented programmers, teach them the physics, and tell them to hack!"

I posted this
comment a few weeks ago, but i never clarified what i thought of
this quotation - until now...
Let's say you learnt a subject really well, and were asked to teach
others. You enjoy teaching and others admire your teaching style. Then
one day, you throw away all your notes and teach off-the-cuff, from
memory.
You have to really know your stuff before you'd dare do that.
We'll that's what I think George Carrette meant by "Just Hack". If you
don't know your stuff inside-out, upside-down and every-which-way,
"Just Hack" is probably not for you.

Will Your Password Need A Password?
Will Your Password Need A Password?
06/01/2004 02:43 AMIf you hadn't realized it already, simple username/password combos are
a pretty weak form of security - yet they're pretty much all we have
for many important online systems that store our most vital
information. While there are other solutions out there, many
companies (especially in the US) have been
incredibly
slow in adopting "two-factor authentication" systems that require
a password plus something else - such as a onetime code generated by a
device you have to have with you (or built into your computer). The
idea, then, is that if your password is revealed, no one else has the
device, so it's useless. If they find the device, they don't have
your password, so it's useless. However, so far, many users don't
value this additional security very much - and the devices still
aren't all that cheap. Plus, many companies are worried that users
will react negatively to such systems as it may slow down the user
experience - causing them to look for other (albeit less secure)
alternatives. Then, of course, there's the worry that people will
start using such systems that aren't compatible with each other, so
you'll need separate devices for every account - which would be much
worse than before. Others, such as those in the fingerprint scanning
business think a biometric approach makes much more sense - but that
leads to all sorts of other questions and issues. Still, as there are
more and more cases of fraud and identity theft due to so much weak
security, it seems increasingly likely that companies will be forced
to adopt more secure methods.
