Mars Rovers Are Almost There!
Mars Rovers Are Almost There!
12/03/2003 01:45 AMSpace.com has an article reminding us that the
Mars rover teams are getting ready for the soon arrival of the
rovers to
the cold Red planet. Basically the ESA rover will get there first
around Christmas,
and then the Nasa's rover Spirit should arrive around January 3rd, and
then
Nasa's rover Opportunity will arrive around January 24th. Nasa
scientists hope there
won't be any gusts of wind or a big hard rock to bust a robot gut on.
Everyone says
they're ready for the landings so let's hope everything's A-OK.
Japan's
Mars probe may not make it. It's unlikely, but if it does
survive, the Nozomi
(translated hope) rover will arrive around December 14th.

Last night NOVA broadcast MARS Dead or Alive, an examination of the current project
to send two rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, to Mars to search for
signs of life. Less than 24 hours after Spirit's successful landing,
NOVA showed the jubilant team celebrating the initial success of the
mission. The show will be re-broadcast tomorrow night (Tuesday) and
will have the latest updates. It's full of interesting information
about the rovers, and contains lots of interviews with scientists and
engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. I recommend it if you're
at all interested in Mars, MERs (Mars Exploratory Rovers), and space
exploration.
Also, Sprit is now sending back color photos of the
Martian landscape at Gusev Crater which NASA is supposed to release
today. In another week or so, Spirit should begin its exploration of
the surface (driving around, collecting samples, taking pictures,
etc.) and sending back even more cool data! And then on January 24th,
the second rover, Opportunity, is expected to land. So cool! I love
the rovers, and I'm so glad to see another one successfully landed.
For more information, here's NASA's Mars Exploration
Rover Mission website. And just for kicks, here's a Mars rover family
photo, showing the new rover and its predecessor, a spare from the
1997 Pathfinder mission. The new rovers are so much bigger!

Linux Based Mars Rovers for Museums
12/23/2003 10:45 AMCMU has announced
20 Personal
Exploration Rovers (PERs) that will make the round to science
museums around the US. The Linux-based robots will simulate real Mars
rovers within "Mars yards", sand-box like replicas of Martian terrain.
CMU and NASA are collaborating to build the robots in an effort to
teach
kids about robots. Future plans of CMU's Personal Rover
Project include lowering the cost of future rovers to
the point that kids can buy one and take it home with them. Additional
photos and video are available from the CMU
site and from NASA
TV.

Tonight: Robots on Mars, hunting for
life on Mars?
01/03/2004 03:22 PMMagic may happen this evening. The USA will attempt to safely land a
scientific golf cart on Mars at about 8.30pm, California time:
Two NASA (news - web sites) Mars landers -- Spirit and Opportunity --
are speeding toward "sweet spot" touch down sites at different, but
scientifically attractive locations on Earth's mysterious neighbor.
The opening act in this $820 million drama to place dual robot
geologists on Mars is the landing of the Mars Exploration Rover (MER)
dubbed Spirit tonight at about 8:35 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST).
The target: Gusev Crater -- a possible former lake in a giant impact
crater on Mars. Primary among the mission's scientific goals is to
search for and characterize a wide range of rocks and soils that hold
clues to past water activity on Mars
