Microsoft Plans More IM Options

Microsoft Plans More IM Options 08/03/2004 12:46 PM
Microsoft is developing a new version of its MSN Messenger that will allow users to fully customize their IM experience. This MSN Messenger upgrade won't come till sometime in mid-2005. Microsoft will also be working on integrating new services which might involve fees, subscriptions, or other forms of payments. Personally if I had to pay to get a feature that I felt should have already been there I'd be pissed off. If it's a one time fee I would probably go along with that, but not a subscription based fee.

Microsoft plans to deliver a new version of its popular MSN Messenger client by mid-2005 that will let users create a more customized instant messaging experience, the company says. Aside from the user experience, MSN Messenger also has to bring in more money, Microsoft representatives say. The company has not really tapped the online advertising opportunities in the client, said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Microsoft's MSN Information Services & Merchant Platform division. He addressed the topic at a meeting last week with financial analysts at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington.

To that goal, some of those new services might involve fees, subscriptions, and other user costs, Mehdi said. For example, the company charges a monthly fee for access to a game IM users can play with their MSN contacts. Microsoft introduced gaming recently in the U.S. and will roll it out internationally in the coming months, according to a Microsoft spokesperson.

Looking to win more users for its Live Meeting Web conferencing service, Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday introduced three additional licensing models.

Microsoft Opens Up Live Meeting Options

Microsoft Opens Up Live Meeting Options 08/11/2004 11:52 AM
Today Microsoft will be unveiling new subscription/ licensing plans for its Live Meeting Web service. Soon after Microsoft acquired PlaceWare it launched Live Meeting. Live Meeting allows users to present information over the Internet such as presentations, and allows users to collaborate better on projects. As of right now WebEx, Cisco, and Raindance Communications dominate the Web conferencing market. Something Microsoft is hoping to change over the next few years.

Already Microsoft is making good progress. Earlier this year Microsoft announced a partnership with MCI. Together with Intercall these two companies are giving Microsoft’s Live Meeting the push it needs. There are a total of three new subscription/licensing plans. The first plan is called "Named User". This plan supports a maximum meeting size of 15 with prices ranging from $180 to $300 dollars (Standard and Professional Edition). The next license is called "Room" which has a maximum meeting size of 2,000 with prices ranging from $6,000 to $10,000. The last new license is called "monthly minutes" which carries an unlimited meeting size, which only costs at $0.35 to $0.45. Please note that I haven't listed the minimum purchase for each new license. This information can be found on Microsoft’s site later in the day.

Live Meeting is showing some real potential as Microsoft continues to improve upon it, but it's going to takes some time for businesses to adopt it. The Web conferencing market has shown to be pretty profitable, especially during last year. If Microsoft plays its cards right it may have another cashcow.

This means that white box makers, the PC stores selling systems with no brand name, will also be able to build and sell Media Center PCs.

The California Public Employees' Retirement System, the biggest U.S. pension fund, said it voted against a Microsoft Corp. proposal that would let the company pay workers with stock instead of options. The fund also opposed the makeup of the board's audit committee. Calpers withheld votes for directors on Microsoft's three-member audit committee because the company authorized its auditor, Deloitte & Touche LLP, to perform other services, spokesman Brad Pacheco said.

Linksys Network Storage Link, Turn Any
USB Harddrive Into Network Storage
06/15/2004 11:54 AM

linksys_nslu.jpg imageWhile they're promoting it with Maxtor, there's nothing stopping you from using Linksys's new Network Storage Link (NSLU2) with any external USB hard drive to turn it into a network storage device (not unlike the Mirra or other backup units). Storage Link even provides passworded web-access to files and multiple users (although they don't get into the details of how multi-user sharing will work). Since the Storage Link works via RJ-45 (regular ol' Ethernet), there's nothing preventing you from attaching it to a wireless router and using it over WiFi, either (albeit at lower speeds than a wired network, of course). Even better, it sounds like you can continue to add additional USB hard drives to the device to increase storage as you go along. Not bad for $100.

New Storage Devices 04/13/2004 05:11 PM

IO Data is set to ship the first removable hard drive based on the IVDR (Information Versatile Disk for Removable) specification. The system is comprised of a hard disk drive sealed in a case which fits into an adapter housing with a USB 2 interface (with USB 1 backwards compatibility.) The initial release will have a 20GB capacity on a 1.8in hard drive in a 3.14 x 2.6 inch cartridge, with larger capacities planned. The adapter and disk will run $323, and disks a la carte at $229.

Meanwhile, Iomega is already producing a similar doodad. The Rev is a 35GB removable hard drive that is aimed at supplanting tape devices for backups and archiving. The Rev costs $400 for the external USB 2.0 unit and $380 for an internal ATAPI drive, both with a bundled disk. The disks alone cost $60 each, or 4 for $200. That makes the IO Data unit seem terribly expensive. Let's see what Moore's Law does with that.

I've been looking at alternatives to my old, slow tape drive system, which now fills five compressed 60GB tapes and takes two days to do a full backup (I like incrementals!) I've been toying with the idea of using a hot-swap RAID tower with a stack of big hard drives instead of a tape library, but the cost and complexity of that is making me hesitate. Either the IO Data or Iomega units might be just the ticket.

Via The Register, and here.

Two technologies, SANs (storage area networks) and NAS (network-attached storage), are CIOs' main options in the red-hot data storage market. Which one an IT buyer chooses depends on three factors: which applications will be run in the enterprise; how much the company is willing to spend; and how much complexity is acceptable.
