First Look: Skip Gateway's MP3 Photo
Jukebox
01/04/2005 06:54 AM
Gateway's MP3 Photo Jukebox is an interesting combination of good ideas poorly implemented. The $250 player has some intriguing features--including the ability to store and display digital photos--but in the end its weaknesses far outweigh its strengths.

One of those weaknesses is the display. The Jukebox is the first "mini" hard drive MP3 player to offer a color LCD, which Gateway touts as a major selling point. Unfortunately, at just 1.6 inches across (measured diagonally), and with a meager resolution of 128 by 128 pixels, the oddly square screen is much too small for comfortable photo viewing.

The Gateway has other size issues, too: While its light weight (3.4 ounces) and capacity (4GB) are similar to those of small-fry competitors such as the IPod Mini, Rio Carbon, and Creative Zen Micro, the Gateway is noticeably bigger than each of those players. In fact, its dimensions are close to those of the heavier 20GB Apple IPod. As a result, the Jukebox feels a bit hollow in your hand.

And he has an interview, published in eWeek, with Google's Evan Williams, where Evan made the controversal statement that Atom is RSS (that kicked off a few blogosphere comments, I'll let you do the Feedster searches). I like how Steve hints to Bill Gates, on his blog, that we should pay attention to Technorati. Hmmm, Steve, actually the guy you need to get to pay attention to Technorati is Christopher Payne. Patent Reform In The Wrong Direction

Patent Reform In The Wrong Direction 04/20/2004 11:18 AM
Someone who prefers to remain anonymous writes "This panel seeks to reform patents by issuing the patent to the first person who applies for it instead of the first person to invent it. Isn't this the exact opposite of what we should be doing?" The article is talking about the National Research Council recommendations, and there are a few more details to this story that don't actually make the article. Most of the rest of the world does use the "first to file" method of patent protection, and it's been an ongoing battle between the US and other nations about bringing the two patent systems into line. Since so many more places use "first to file" rather than "first to invent" it's long been assumed that the US would eventually fall into line. It is backwards, of course, and is designed more to make it easier to figure out who should own the patent, rather than to actually encourage innovation. Instead, it will simply encourage people to file more bogus patents earlier in the process, just to make sure. It is a step backwards, and the only justification for it is to avoid having to spend difficult time figuring out who actually deserves the patent. I would much prefer patents go to those who actually deserve it, as that would seem to actually encourage innovation.

Forget Layoffs, Fire Them For Porn

Forget Layoffs, Fire Them For Porn 09/01/2004 01:26 PM
One writer at ZDNet UK is wondering if the porn excuse is being used as an alternative to laying people off. There are a growing number of stories about people losing their jobs for viewing porn on work computers, but the writer wonders how bad the offenses really are. He also notes that no one seems to complain when a company gets rid of people for porn, but layoffs seem like bad news all around. This seems like a stretch (and also seems to imply that almost anyone you'd want to layoff has been surfing porn on their work computer), but is still somewhat amusing. Maybe we'll have a different stat next to monthly layoffs: "fired for porn."
