Quote: The Trouble in Corporate America

Quote: The Trouble in Corporate America 04/11/2004 11:46 PM

The trouble in corporate America is that too many people with too much power live in a box (their home), then travel the same road every day to another box (their office). -- Faith Popcorn, The Popcorn Report, 1991

Crank letters to corporate America and

Crank letters to corporate America and
its response
12/04/2003 07:15 AM
Consumer Joe is a collection of crank/prank letters sent by screenwriter Paul Davidson to a variety of giagantic corporations, asking, for example, if he should call poison control after swallowing toothpaste, or if the Barbie hot-tub would be suitable for a garden party. The letters are genuinely funny, and the clueless bureaucratese in the responses is often equally good, but best of all are the responses from corporate letter-answerers who have winkled out his game and are playing along with their own sly humor:
Our research and development department went to work right away in the smoothie lab experimenting with your concoctions.

The Tuna Melt smoothie looks promising. We found the key to be white albacore tuna in oil, lots of mayonnaisse and some powdered cheese. However, the Thanksgiving smoothie (turkey, cranberry, and gravy) is posing some challenges. Your recommendation to heat it up would require us to install microwave ovens at all locations.

Microsoft's decision not to retrofit security updates for IE for any other version besides Windows XP has a lot of people upset. Imagine if you are on a limited income and can not afford to upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP. Also what if you are corporate entity and you have 1000's of PC's that run windows 2000.

Their is a simple answer for those running Windows 2000, switch to Firefox but that still leaves the Poor to fend for themselves. They are the ones that are more likely to not have up to date virus protection, firewalls or spyware software. So much for their security incentive. Bad Bad Microsoft. [Dan Gillmor]

Quote 12/03/2002 11:46 AM

"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it."

Ramez Naam, group program manager for MSN Search, declined to say whether or not search functions would be integrated directly into Microsoft's Internet Explorer. But a Microsoft executive, who asked to remain unnamed, told me that his company had recently reconstituted its browser development organization. "Microsoft effectively disbanded the Internet Explorer group after killing Netscape," he said. "But recently, they realized that Firefox was starting to gain share and that browser enhancements would be useful in the search market."

Philipp Lenssen's new Quote Finder checks possible sources or quotations for every sentence of a text using Google. This could be used for a variety of reasons, one of them to check if a text is really original, or copied from another work. You could also find out if you have used a very common sentence, or an idea someone else had before. Finally you may just check how often parts of a text of yours have been quoted online.

It's not a truck stop, it's a travel center, and its 150-plus locations will be wireless by July: Travel Centers combine truck stop features with RV and auto drivers needs, and they'll add Wi-Fi to the mix--it's a must have for any place in its category now. The 40 company-owned stores are already unwired; the franchisees will be ready to go by July 3. Service will cost $1.49 for an hour, $4.49 for 24 hours starting at the time of purchase, $22.49 for two months, and $169.99 per year. These longer plans are designed truckers to ensure brand loyalty. Diesel-fuel buyers can cash in RoadKing Club points they earn from buying gas against the Wi-Fi service....
