I am down with Plato and Socrates, And I like to get busy with all the ladies. Grunt, grunt/ sumthin,' sumthin,' sumthin,'/ Grunt/ Up in ma shed, up in ma shed...
From Bubbles' first freestyle rap, to Mr. Lahey's ever-doomed attempts to keep control of Sunnyvale Trailer Park, to Randy's shirtless gut, to eight year old Trinity's nicotine patch, to J-ROC's genuine delusion that he is black: the brilliance of Trailer Park Boys rolls on. Season Four begins tonight in Canada on Showcase; and on April 15th Season One debuts on BBC America. Here's hoping that success won't change the best TV show ever to come out of Canada. Previously discussed on Mefi last year , but I hope the new season merits a revist to Sunnyvale. Pass the pepperoni and the rum and coke.

Barbecued Broccoli

Barbecued Broccoli 05/10/2004 09:48 PM
No, I’m not kidding. I was barbecueing a couple of lamb cutlets and there was this great big head of broccoli near the front of the fridge. So I tried an experiment and it came out great. Don’t break up the broccoli, slice right across the head; a few clumps will come off but you’ll get some flattish pieces with lots of stem too. Thinner is better, I think. Brush the whole thing with toasted-sesame oil—a little hard to come by, but very useful—and put it on the grill, high heat, for, well, about as long as it takes to barbecue a couple of lamb cutlets. The surfaces of the leafy bits will be slightly charred. Yummy; I’ll be doing this again.

Ricky Jay revealed

Ricky Jay revealed 06/19/2004 06:28 PM
rabbit2The June issue of Smithsonian magazine features a profile of Ricky Jay, magician, author, and collector of odd antiquities. I'm fascinated not only by Jay's unparalleled talent as a prestidigitator, but also his insatiable curiosity for the wonderful, obscure, and strange--from the freaks and fringe-dwellers featured in his newsletter/book Jay's Journal of Anomalies to his comprehensive knowledge of old-time grifts and scams. From the Smithsonian article:
“The idea of crime based on wit is kind of wonderful,” Jay told me. “There’s not much admirable in a guy who comes at you with a gun and says, ‘Give me your money.’ But a guy who makes you sign a piece of paper, and then you find out you’ve bought the Brooklyn Bridge—the con is enormously appealing. And it’s theatrical. The con—the big con, especially—is an entire theatrical orchestration for an audience of one. It’s both lovely and diabolical at the same time.”

Broccoli History Via Cameraphone

Broccoli History Via Cameraphone 07/19/2004 11:15 AM

broccoli.jpg imageProduce giant Dole is introducing a new Japanese service that will allow cameraphone users to track the history of their fruits and vegetables by scanning a special "QR" barcode. The service is even more exclusive than Japan-only at the moment -- for now, the only vegetable history available is that of broccoli. Everyone knows where broccoli comes from: the crunchy, cold depths of nutritional hell. But at least now you'll know which hell, and which creaking iron cart was used to haul it from the depths where flavor goes to die.

Smarter Than Me

Smarter Than Me 12/29/2003 11:44 PM
Sometimes I'm accused of being "smart," which bothers me since I don't know what it means. It's a comparative label: if this one is smart, then others are equally smart, smarter, or less smart. Yet all generalizations are false, all comparisons fail. There's no way to measure these things, not really. It's a bogus idea. That's not exactly right. I quickly identify folks smarter than me, but it's not empirical, just a cocktail party chat I have with myself. Probably...

Smarter Than the CEO

Smarter Than the CEO 05/31/2004 05:26 AM
Success, most corporations assume, depends on the efforts of a few superlative individuals. As a result, they treat their CEOs as superheroes. In doing so, firms are neglecting their most valuable resource: the collective intelligence of the organization as a whole. By James Surowiecki from Wired magazine.

spambots get smarter

spambots get smarter 01/06/2004 01:03 PM

Since today started as a "spam kind of day"...

Something I noticed over the last few weeks is that I've started to receive spam that is way more targeted than before. In what sense?

Well, let's say this: I'm getting spam that not only knows my full name, but also my address. Okay, not my current address, but I've already gotten spam that explictly mentions both my New York address (from 5+ years ago) and my SF Bay address (from 2+ years ago). This is bad, not only they know my email address, but they also know where I live(d)! Yes, we know that with time and money you can get a lot of information on anyone, but this has to be done automatically and massively, or otherwise it wouldn't be a practical option for spammers.

Clearly, one way this could happen is if someone (say, buy.com) has been selling their customer information. Since I usually take care of buying online only when my privacy is more or less protected, this is unlikely, though certainly possible.

There's a more likely way in which this connection was made: Google.

Google not only knows the web, it also knows other information... like phone numbers (at least in the US). Jon mentioned this some time ago.

A spambot to get "connected information" would work like this. Say you write an automated script to go through phone numbers on Google. Then the script takes the address data and the person's name, and then googles the person's name. It takes the first few results (or maybe only the first one) and scans the resulting pages to match an email's name to the person's name. Sure, this won't be 100% correct, but spammers don't care about that. And Google's reach makes it reasonable to think that you'd have a reasonably high hit rate. You could even write a program that uses the GoogleAPI for it.

Sure, we could say, as Scott McNealy does, that "you're privacy is gone, get over it". Even if you don't agree with that statement (and I don't, at least I want to resist it!), this is nevertheless disturbing. And the question that follows is: does Google have any responsibility for this? They'd probably say that they're providing a service by integrating yellow pages information, which would be true.

I'm not picking on Google, rather Google is the example here because of its reach and pervasiveness, but I'm sure that similar things can be done with other search engines and if not it won't be long before you can. Can we fix this at all? If so, how?

Since this is the tip of the iceberg, my main thought at the moment is that I'm a character from Lost in Space and all I hear is "Danger Will Robinson! Danger!".

Tinderbox Keeps Getting Smarter

Tinderbox Keeps Getting Smarter 03/22/2005 04:58 PM
Matt Neuburg (~210 words)

Tinderbox Keeps Getting Smarter -- Eastgate Systems' Tinderbox has been upgraded to version 2.4. Tinderbox (see my review in TidBITS-651) is a superb way to create heavily hyperlinked text; text snippets are stored in a hierarchical structure and can be exported as Web pages. I used Tinderbox to create the online help for the Perl editor Affrus, which blogger John Gruber has called "the finest software documentation," in part because it is "cross-linked out the ying-yang." Tinderbox 2.4 makes outlines smarter by permitting any entry to have a rule for updating itself periodically; for example, if you're using Tinderbox to maintain a to-do list, a parent item (representing a category or group of tasks) might have a rule that its "completed" attribute should be true if and only if the "completed" attribute of all its children (the actual tasks) is true. There are also many small bug fixes and aesthetic tweaks, and Tinderbox's Web-page export continues to evolve strongly. Tinderbox runs in both the classic Mac OS (Mac OS 9.2 recommended) and Mac OS X 10.0 and later. Tinderbox costs $165, plus $70 annually for free updates. A demo version is available for download.
