The Iraqi election is only a little more than three weeks off, but for Iraqi civilians and American soldiers, that's got to seem like an eternity. In the last two days, four suicide bombers and multiple guerilla attacks have killed 33 Iraqi policemen, civilians, and government officials. Six American soldiers died on Tuesday alone. The mounting carnage has led to yet another round of questioning as to whether holding an election on the 30th would be feasible, much less advisable. On Tuesday, Iraq's interim president, Ghazi Yawar, suggested that "it will be a tough call to hold the election," and suggested the U.N. should weigh in on whether Iraq's ready for an election.

Seagliders Break Endurance Records

Seagliders Break Endurance Records 04/06/2005 12:08 PM
Roland Piquepaille writes, "Ocean-diving Seagliders built at the University of Washington (UW) just broke endurance records. Two of these Seagliders, which are 1.8 m long and weigh 52 kg, were launched last September between California and Hawaii and reached the island of Kauai after 191 days in a trip of 1,860 miles. Both Seagliders did more than 500 dives down to 1,000 m during their trips. When a Seaglider reaches the surface, where it stays for only five minutes, it determines its position via GPS, uploads its data and downloads its new instructions via satellite. Meanwhile, two other Seagliders are still somewhere in the Labrador Sea for more than 193 days now and have yet to be retrieved." For more details and photos, see Roland's blog entry.

Let's Pay More, Not less, for Gasoline

Let's Pay More, Not less, for Gasoline 06/06/2004 10:03 AM
What I want most of all is for us to use less energy from polluting, non-renewable sources. I want to see us invest in sensible public transportation, conservation and renewable energy. The best way to make that happen is to raise the price of oil even higher. Then, subsidize the technologies and transportation systems that will help us in a more permanent way. More...

Gasoline Spam

Gasoline Spam 05/26/2004 04:53 PM
Oh, those nutty spammers. Someone should do a study of spam headlines to see if they're a good way to tell what subject is popular in the news at the time the spam was sent. We've already written about how quickly spammers like to pick up on current events, and now comes news that many spammers are mentioning the high price of gas in the subject lines of their emails to get people to click. Apparently 5% of spam mentioned gas in the subject line one day last month. Some of the gasoline spam is actually related to gasoline - but is really trying to get people to sign up to get spammed some more. Plenty of other spam just uses gas in the subject line to get you to click - at which point you'll be presented with porn. So, maybe you shouldn't look for "Sexua lly-Explicit" in the subject line to identify your porn spam - but, rather "Gasoline."

Gas Pump Hacker. "CHICAGO -- In a bold and outrageous theft staged in broad daylight, a driver pumped about $900 worth of gasoline at a suburban gas station.
