Background I was a reasonably happy Sprint PCS customer for the last 2.5 years or so. But ever since I moved into my new place, I've become more of a disgruntled customer. The wireless signal in my house sucks. I get one "bar" of signal strength and calls typically drop, if they work at all. And the coverage at work seems to have gone downhill too. Even on the 4th floor where my current office is, I get lots of...

Junxion Box Puts Cellular Data at
Workgroup's Disposal
06/21/2004 09:02 AM
Junxion Box acts as bridge between growing cellular data networks and the need for ubiquitous, driver-free workgroup access: In today's Seattle Times, I write about local firm Junxion which will shortly ship its Junxion Box, a small device that uplinks to cellular data networks through a PC Card, and shares the connection via built-in Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Think of it like a portable Internet feed. The Junxion Box is driver free in the sense that the company handles the software connection for several kinds of PC Cards to several national data networks. Local users connect via the LAN side--they don't have to install and configure the special PC Card drivers which are available for specific platforms with specific limitations. Temporary work sites and mobile workgroups will benefit most from the system, which is an effective modem and analog line replacement given current cell data speeds. But as cell networks increase in speed and prices continue to fall, it's likely that the Junxion Box's niche will expand as more of a broadband replacement for certain kinds of markets. I've tested a prototype of the Junxion box, and it's just as easy as the company maintains. You plug it into AC power or a DC car adapter. You wait a few moments for it to train up to the cell data network. You connect. Will cell operators allow the Junxion Box on their network, and can they do anything to stop its use? The answers seem to be maybe and no....

How Verizon Wireless Puts Politics And
Profits Ahead Of Safety

How Verizon Wireless Puts Politics And
Profits Ahead Of Safety
07/08/2004 03:49 PM
There's been an ongoing battle recently about what to do about the fact that certain Nextel mobile phones cause interference problems for public safety dispatchers. Unfortunately, the battle has become a big political game between Nextel, the FCC and Verizon Wireless. The main issue here needs to be public safety, and every player in the battle has let politics and profits creep into the question. Today, the FCC finally (after many months of very public wavering on the issue) came out with their compromise plan, which is designed mostly to piss off both sides. Basically, Nextel gets the spectrum it (and Verizon Wireless) wants, but has to pay more for it. All in all, it's a reasonable compromise in the interest of public safety -- which means moving Nextel off of its old spectrum as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, in the ongoing game of politics, it's looking like Verizon Wireless may follow through on threats to sue to stop this deal (possibly even suing FCC commissioners personally) which would only result in putting more lives at risk. Verizon Wireless should admit that this is a compromise deal. They don't get the spectrum, but Nextel had to cough up more cash, and in the interest of public safety, it's time to lock up the lawyers and let this one go.

Cellular sounds 04/15/2004 01:10 PM
What do cells sound like? Nanotech pioneer Jim Gimzewski and grad student Andrew Pelling are using the tiny tip of an atomic force microscope like the needle of a record player to pick up a cell's sound-generating vibrations. Gimzewski has named the fieled "sonocytology." From a Smithsonian Magazine article about the research:
"The distance the cell wall moves determines the amplitude, or volume, of the sound wave, and the speed of the up-and-down movement is its frequency, or pitch. Though the volume of the yeast cell sound was far too low to be heard, Gimzewski says its frequency was theoretically within the range of human hearing. 'So all we're doing is turning up the volume,' he adds."
