Lying all over the place

Lying all over the place 06/23/2004 09:22 AM

Better late then never. The State Department announced Tuesday that their report that terror has been decreasing was in fact incorrect. Terror actually ROSE in 2003. However, they are still arguing that they "winning the war on terror." ( AP/NY Times - Amended Report Shows Terror Rose in 2003)

On our home front, the Japanese diet passed the controversial pension bill (the pension that 1/3 of the cabinet members have been shown to have evaded at some point). It is shown that an inflated fertility rate was used for the bill to show rosier numbers and lower, more accurate numbers that had been finalized for more than 2 weeks by the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry were withheld. Public sentiment has already been very negative about the pension system. The government had been pushing this new bill, were paying commissions to retired bureaucrats to collect such pensions from normal citizens, and the politicians themselves not paying. Now this. (Japan Times -
Inflated fertility rate used for pension bills
)

What surprises me is the stupidity of these lies. Neither of these lies were likely to remain unchallenged. Did these people believe that they could just fudge numbers to make some false short-term point. Amazing.

Is the Department of Justice lying? 07/01/2004 03:48 PM
Is the U.S. Department of Justice lying about its computer systems in order to avoid living up to the law of the land, or is America really so much at risk that a vital department -- to which the FBI itself reports, and purports to be a major player in the fight against terrorism -- cannot use its computer systems for fear that they will crash and destroy vital data? And why are there no backups?

lying in odessa - part four

lying in odessa - part four 03/06/2004 01:58 AM
Ever since I played my first game of Hold'em in high school, and learned about the World Series of Poker sometime during my junior year, I've entertained notions of playing in the big one. But every time I go to Vegas, I look into those poker rooms, and lose my nerve. Before tonight, I've never had the balls to play in anything bigger than a home game with friends . . . I doubt I'll ever play in the WSOP, but the way I feel right now, I could be at the final table, staring across the felt at Johnny Chan.

I take a deep breath, and grab the back of my chair tightly, I don't have to look at my knuckles to know that they're white. Here comes fifth street . . .

A couple of weeks ago, I played in a no-limit hold-em tournament. There were sixteen players at two tables. It was a freezeout, with the top three finishers taking home money. I had never played in a real money tournament before, and this was my first chance to test out the teachings of Doyle Brunson, Mike Caro, David Sklansky, and Lee Jones that I've spent so many hours studying.

SBC lying to customers to get them to

SBC lying to customers to get them to
switch
03/14/2003 02:20 PM
SBC is sending out deceptive, fraudulent notices to Bay Area DSL customers, telling them that they have to switch to YahooDSL or be terminated.
You have to scroll deep into the text to finally learn that subscribers do not in fact have to become members of the SBC Yahoo family (and open themselves up to unforeseen privacy issues, but we'll get back to that).

"If you do not upgrade your account to SBC Yahoo DSL, you will still have your high-speed Internet connection," the company admits, "but you will eventually lose your SBC home page and portal."

There, at last, is the truth: You don't have to make the switch, and, if you choose not to, all you'll have to do is pick a new start page for your browser. Otherwise, nothing changes.

The Man In The Glasses Knows If You're

The Man In The Glasses Knows If You're
Lying - Or If You Love Him
01/19/2004 01:44 AM
Remember those silly questions you used to get asked at the airport, where people used to wonder, if you hadn't actually packed your own bags or had accepted a package from someone else - would you actually admit it? Well, those questions are no longer required, but maybe they're going to make a comeback as someone has apparently invented lie-detecing glasses, which they're pitching to airline security agencies as a good way to determine if someone has plans to do any harm to an airline. The same company is also pitching a different version of the same technology that can supposedly indicate whether the person you're talking to "loves" you or not. With both of these products, you might want to question their accuracy levels. The systems are different than traditional polygraphs, by measuring aspects of the voice frequency range - and analyzes such things as pauses and how stressed the voice sounds. They're trying to sell the glasses for more commercial reasons as well - such as the ability to watch the presidential debates and get an indication of how often the politicians are lying (insert old political joke here).

lying in odessa - part three

lying in odessa - part three 03/06/2004 01:58 AM
I get up, take a piss, and grab a Coke. My cell phone rings while I'm at the bar. It's my stepson, and he wants to know how I'm doing. I tell him about the 7-4, and he says, "Don't tilt, Wil."

"Too late," I say.

"Oh. That sucks. Well, don't worry about it. I'll see you when you get home. I love you."

"I love you, too." I say. We hang up.

For some reason, the conversation settles me down, and I return with new focus. I decide that I am the only person at this table who can beat me, even if the cards aren't helping me win.

lying in odessa - part two

lying in odessa - part two 03/06/2004 01:58 AM
The game starts at 8. My watch -- a gift from Sean Astin when we were promoting Toy Soldiers in Japan-- says it's 7:55. The tables are starting to fill up, so I ask the bartender for a glass of water. I take it, tip him a dollar, and head for my table.

The blinds start out at 5-10, and double every 30 minutes. I have studied my Sklansky and Jones faithfully for the last ten days or so, and I have what I think is a solid game plan: Play extremely tight, but aggressive. Only premium hands, no chasing, and no raising before the flop unless I'm sitting on AA or AK. For the first two levels, whenever I have something worth playing, I'll skip sandbagging and just bet into the raisers. No free cards, just survive. I thought it was a good strategy, and I hoped that my opponents wouldn't catch on that I was only in the pot when I had the nuts. I figured that if I wasn't the first one out, I'd be happy.

My seat is the only empty one at Table Two. I put my coat over the back of my chair, stack my chips, and sit down. Everyone at my table seems to know each other. They're the regulars, I guess, and I've read enough to know that I'm already at a disadvantage.

Bush on Kerry: He's Not Lying

Bush on Kerry: He's Not Lying 08/27/2004 01:27 PM
  • NY Times: Bush Dismisses Idea That Kerry Lied on Vietnam. President Bush said on Thursday that he did not believe Senator John Kerry lied about his war record, but he declined to condemn the television commercial paid for by a veterans group alleging that Mr. Kerry came by his war medals dishonestly.
  • At last the president does the right thing, at least part of it. But if he really believes Kerry is telling the truth, it's strange that he doesn't say what inexorably follows: that the people who made those ads should stop their lying. Anyway, congratulations to Bush for showing some common decency.
