Google On Your Desktop

Google On Your Desktop 05/24/2004 02:27 PM
Last week we posted about Google's desktop search tool (codenamed Puffin), and here come the stories on how the move pits Google against Microsoft. While that might not be too far from the truth, the article's suggestion of a Google-Lindows partnership to take on Microsoft seems a bit of a stretch. But what about a Google-branded (GMozilla?) browser? It wouldn't be surprising if there's a Google employee spending his 20% "free" time on making a Google browser that is Google-ad-friendly. (The press would go crazy over that, as would the privacy freaks.) Competing directly with Microsoft will probably bring a lot of headaches for Google. So maybe the best way to compete with Microsoft is to ignore them and simply continue to produce useful products.

Get Google Desktop to Support Firefox

Get Google Desktop to Support Firefox 12/19/2004 03:25 PM
Google recently released Google Desktop (for Windows users), as you are probably already aware. Google Desktop is a "desktop search application that provides full text search over your email, computer files, chats, and the web pages you've viewed." Great! The hang-up: the program searches web data — e.g. cached pages and bookmarks — in only one browser, Internet Explorer. Where you come in: Google has provided a feature request form and specifically the option to request support for Mozilla Firefox. Get to submitting. And if you have another minute of time to spare, offer Mozilla Thunderbird as an additional request in the "Suggestion" text box. Pinder, does this entry qualify as a spin-off to the Google Browser trilogy? Update: A F.A.Q. entry has been created by Google Desktop — possibly in response to many directed questions — with information on the current status of compatibilty between the browser and the search application.

  • Reuters: Google Acquires Digital Photo Management Company. Web search company Google Inc. said on Tuesday it acquired Picasa Inc., a digital photo management company it hopes will help it to offer services that will differentiate it as it seeks to go public.
  • Intriguing. Google is moving quickly to assemble the pieces of something much more comprehensive than search and advertising. I'm not sure I can see the full outline, though.

Google faces a difficult task if it tries to transplant its successful Web search business to the desktop. The company is reportedly preparing to release downloadable software that enables people to search for text and files stored on their computer's hard drive. The move would dramatically expand Google's search business beyond the Web while taking direct aim at Microsoft, which is itself getting ready to take on Google's dominance in Web search with its own technology.

Google To Launch Desktop Search Tool

Google To Launch Desktop Search Tool 05/19/2004 02:57 AM
I assume this will surprise all of about three or four people who haven't been paying attention, but Google is preparing to laun ch a desktop search tool that will let you search through your own hard drive (in exchange, I assume, for contextual ads). The press will make a big deal about this and how it's a way for them to challenge Microsoft's Longhorn offering, which will have greatly improved local search. I'm not sure it's that interesting. Longhorn is so far off that it's really not worth speculating whether or not this product actually competes with it or not. The more interesting question is, if this local search tool involves contextual ads, will the privacy folks start complaining again that Google is now snooping through your hard drive?
