Commentary: Free software on Windows
07/17/2004 08:16 AMI haven't used Windows very often in the past seven or eight years. I
declared my independence on July 4, 1998, and I've never looked back.
Recently I was issued a company laptop. It came with Windows XP
preinstalled, of course, since it is an IBM ThinkPad and only
Microsoft operating systems are available preloaded on IBM (and HP,
and Dell) desktops and laptops destined for North American consumers.
I decided for various reasons to make the ThinkPad a dual-boot
machine. Color me surprised at what I've learned about the Windows
platform since. Who knew there is so much free -- as in speech --
software available for Windows these days?

How Do You Definitively Uninstall
Windows Software?
02/05/2005 09:16 PMHow do you completely remove an application from a Windows machine?
(Warning: this post will give Mac users a gratuitous chance to
gloat.)
Windows has a tendency to scatter apps to the four corners of your
hard drive when you install (see thi
s). Installing some apps is roughly akin to firing a shotgun
through a bag of granulated sugar onto deep pile carpeting. The
question then becomes, how do you impersonate a vacuum cleaner?
When I want to make sure I've really gotten rid of a
Windows app, here's what I do:
- Uninstall from Add/Remove Programs
- Run "msconfig" and look for anything that might be related to the
program that auto-starts, including Windows Services
- Reboot
- Search for and delete the Program Files folder
- Search for and delete any related folders in the "Local Settings"
and "Application Data" folders in my profile
- Search for and delete any related registry keys
- Search for and delete any related environment variables
- Search for and delete any related Start Menu items
Anyone else want to offer suggestions?

08/18/2004 04:46 AMA fascinating new book dropped into my inbox the other day. Now before
you get the wrong impression, "fascinating" in this context doesn't
mean a "page-turner" or "pot-boiler" such as "The Da Vinci Code."
Rather, I'm thinking of "fascinate" as meaning: "to render motionless,
as with a fixed stare or by arousing terror or awe." Not terror in the
Stephen King sense, though. In this book, the cast of characters is
all-Windows: Windows NT, Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows Server
2003. The plot is all about identifying and solving problems. But it's
not just another troubleshooting tome, not by a long shot.

BIOS reviews the IBM ThinkPad R51 and finds it to be an
excellent value for a solid laptop, as long as you stay away from
adding lots of the overpriced options from IBM's catalog (generally
good advice when buying any laptop, really). For less that thousand
dollars you can bring home a ThinkPad of your own, albeit one that is
wholly unsuitable for gaming or other performance-intensive
activities. That's okay, though - it's still a ThinkPad, one of the
best laptops you can buy.

I spoke to at IBM had never heard of a pixel
before. He asked what it was and then kept referring to them as

IBM Thinkpad X40 Review
06/23/2004 09:11 AMLike pretty much any other
Thinkpad, the X40 ultra-portable won't win any prizes for its looks,
especially since IBM continues to festoon its otherwise sleek black
slabs of mobile computing goodness with jolly red, green, and blue
stickers here and there, but man alive, they make a nice laptop. Riyad
Emeran thinks so, too, after trying about the X40 for a couple of
weeks -- he's calling the 1.2GHz Pentium M powered laptop the best
ultra-portable around. And that's after he reviewed the Sony
VAIO VGN-X505VP. Big words, too, considering the many relative
shortcomings of the X40, like a slowish 4,200 RPM hard drive, 1,024 by
768 screen, and only 802.11b WiFi stock standard. The VAIO may be
sexy, but the Thinkpad is more usable; that wins the day when it comes
to laptops every time.

Stop SQL Injection Attacks Before They
Stop You
09/12/2004 11:33 PMArmed with advanced server-side technologies like ASP.NET and powerful
database servers such as Microsoft® SQL Server™, developers are
able to create dynamic, data-driven Web sites with incredible ease.
But the power of ASP.NET and SQL can easily be used against you by
hackers mounting an all-too-common class of attack—the SQL injection
attack.
The basic idea behind a SQL injection attack is this: you create a
Web page that allows the user to enter text into a textbox that will
be used to execute a query against a database. A hacker enters a
malformed SQL statement into the textbox that changes the nature of
the query so that it can be used to break into, alter, or damage the
back-end database. How is this possible? Let me illustrate with an
example.
