bw_ds.jpgNintendo is launching the black and white versions of the Nintendo DS in Japan today, in case you're in the market for a slightly nicer looking model. I'm glad I have a DS, if for the first-party Nintendo games if nothing else (Advance Wars and Animal Crossing will take up plenty of my time) but I still can't help but look at my PSP sitting just beyond the DS and wonder what, exactly, it's going to take for Nintendo to recover from Sony's onslaught. It's going to take a lot more than colored DSes, for sure.

Is This The Nintendo DS? Probably, Yes. 05/11/2004 07:49 AM
Aw man, it looks like USA Today may have scooped us all. Here is the pic they ran today with their story about the DS. Sort of ugly, isn't it? (It is, at least, sort of Game & Watch-like, which might explain the retrograde styling.) Since they credit the picture...

Nintendo DS

Nintendo DS 12/19/2004 03:46 PM

The hype machine has been hot and heavy for the Nintendo DS. Of course there's always the excitement about a brand-new gaming console, whether it's a handheld or home unit. But the DS — the Dual Screen — is something altogether new. We managed to get our hands on one and let game reviewer Ben Kuchera give it a good rogering.

So I didn't know what to think when I hit the town looking for a Nintendo DS. Like most of us I was skeptical of the unit at first, the idea of a handheld with two screens and touch capabilities seemed too gimmicky, almost as if Nintendo was getting into the PDA market. Sony seemed ready to take the handheld crown from Nintendo with specs that were more initially impressive.

The result? Well, we're not going to spill the beans here, but let's just say he was pleasantly surprised. Want more detail? Read on...

Nintendo DS to Have Wi-Fi Voice Over IP

Nintendo DS to Have Wi-Fi Voice Over IP 08/31/2004 03:07 PM

Information has come out about Nintendo's upcoming DS handheld's ability to serve as a voice-over-IP handset, allowing DS gamers to make phone calls when connected to a Wi-Fi access point. There's no word if the service will allow DS users to call other, regular phones or not. Knowing Nintendo, it's probably more likely that DS users will be able to chat to other DS users, and not serve as an actual phone. (Thanks, John!)
