Sharing the home-user wifi with neighbours?
Sharing the home-user wifi with neighbours?11/15/2003 05:42 PM I have bought a wireless adsl modem router, and a wifi card for my
laptop. I'm wondering what people have to say, about the benefits,
and problems, with sharing a wifi with neighbours, and what you have
to say about the best approach to getting this done! For example,
in a typical london residential area, people don't know their
neighbours, and I certainly would be shy to talk to them! I suppose a
wifi may be a good icebreaker, to get together?
Imagine having a van that had 13 cameras and took a picture every
15 feet. The applications are unlimited I would love to have them
drive thru my grandfathers property this would give me a visual record
of what state the property is in. Do this every few years and you
would have one heck of a record. BUt think about using it for homeland
security etc. Insurance adjusters like it and homeland defense does
to. [Yahoo News]

I'll be honest,
I'm not sure exactly how the Pixie (PXE-DCM) from SPControls works.
Best I can tell, it functions as a wall-mounted learning remote
control, picking up basic functions from any other remote using the
standard 'point and learn' technique of other learning devices. Then,
I guess, you can use the Pixie to control the basic functions of your
projector or plasma screen or whatever from the wall, instead of, you
know, that handy remote. I'm not against this, per se, but it
does seem a little weird that they don't explain it in any more detail
than they do. So it's an IR light switch? How does it get power? So
it's all the benefits of a remote, minus most of the functionality,
and stuck in a wall? Please rewrite your ad copy and give me a price
so I may pan your product more thoroughly. (Thanks, Travis!) Read

Wrist-mounted instrumentation: nerdy cufflinks07/15/2004 12:17 PM
I've never had much use for cufflinks (especially since my tux and
tux-shirt vanished along with three boxes of prized possessions that I
mailed from San Francisco to London), but these ones appeal to the
autistically instrument-obssessed nerd in me: an entire line of
cufflinks with embedded clocks, thermomenters and compasses. It's
enough to make me a) want to buy a pair and b) buy a new tux to wear
'em with.

Wrist-mounted walkie-talkies storm Hong Kong12/22/2003 11:20 AM Gizmodo reported that
people in Hong Kong are going around with short-range walkie talkies
in order to communicate with nearby chums wihtout paying a toll to the
telcos; now a Gizmodo reader confirms it:
Your entry on the HK Walkie Talkie phenomenon is 100% accurate.
All the electronics markets are filled with FRS radios and the like.
I've even seen people using them to meet up on the MTR (Subway).
He also says that walkie-talkies that you wear on your wrist (like
the one pictured at right) are most definitely the ones to be seen
with.
When size matters, Denon's new AV rack with a deployable
80-inch screen should suit your fancy. Weighing in at 319 pounds, the
"ARC-8000" is completely integrated - there is no need for hanging
hardware. I'm not entirely sure how you get a 80" screen to go up in
the air on its own, but I can assume some sort of steel bar needs to
be put in place.
It may cost 472,500 yen, but hey, that's nothing compared to the
cost of the projector you need to buy to go with this.

Those Free AOL Minutes Don't Help When You Rack Up $3,400 In Long Distance
Those Free AOL Minutes Don't Help When You Rack Up $3,400 In Long Distance04/19/2004 03:09 PM A New Hampshire resident was upset that his AOL dialup kept kicking
him offline, so he ran AOL's AutoFix program, which he said fixed the
problem. He also says that the program (without him realizing it)
changed the dialup phone number to a long distance toll number -
something he only realized wh
en a $3,400 phone bill arrived. AOL claims that it's not their
problem, saying that the AutoFix program doesn't change the phone
number, so that couldn't be the problem. However, now the New
Hampshire Attorney General is stepping in to ask AOL to go to
mediation to settle this issue - even though the actual bill is due to
Verizon. It sounds like more details are needed, but now that the
press is covering the story in a way that makes AOL look bad, expect
them to change their tune and play nice.

Revenge of the User: Lessons from Creator/User Battles ETCON talk notes
The response is an attempt to "configure the users" -- constrain
behavior to acceptable behavior with messaaging, kicking people
off, etc.
This won't work: you can't tell a hacker not to hack. These kids
are social hackers. You can stop some bad behavior, but you chase
off your best users, too.
Dating doesn't happen because you're in a dating context. Dating
arises out of real contexts.
Taking away fakesters didn't make Frienster more real. Friendster
is unreal because people never remove their friends, even if they
never see them (the exception is when you break up, ironic,
because ex-lovers are strong ties!).
