08/01/2004 03:30 AMAccording to a recent study by Current Analysis, unit sales of
notebooks equipped with a widescreen 15.4-inch display have steadily
continued to climb throughout the first half of 2004. As of June 30,
the widescreen market accounted for 48% of all notebooks sold,
compared to only 15% in December 2003. The growth represents the
highest share yet for the widescreen models since its introduction in
the spring of 2003 and demonstrates widescreen systems are selling in
greater numbers than its traditional square counterparts. [PRWEB Aug

successful Centrino platform, dubbed 'Sonoma.' The platform will
include the new 'Dothan' Pentium M chips, with a 533-MHz front-side
bus (up from Centrino's 400-Mhz), a new WLAN chipset that will support
802.11a, b, and g, as well as...

“AMD has fleshed out its mobile chip catalogue this week by
shipping the Mobile AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor. It joins a range of
mobile models, from 2800+ to 3400+, but is the first to be built using
90nm technology. Aimed at ‘thin and light’ notebooks, the
first commercial use of the chip will be in new models of Acer’s
Ferrari range of laptops due in Europe later this month and worldwide

Intel to announce 'Napa' Centrino 3 at
IDF?
08/27/2004 01:56 PMIntel hasn't even shipped 'Sonoma', the second generation of its
Centrino mobile platform yet, but it may well announce the
third-generation at Intel Developer Forum (IDF) next month. So claim
unnamed sources cited by DigiTimes. The site's article refers what
we'll call 'Centrino 3' as "a notebook-use dual-core processor,
codenamed 'Napa', slated for launch in the first quarter of
2006".
Napa is actually the successor to Sonoma, and is believed to be the
platform that will incorporate the dual-core Pentium M, 'Yonah'; a new
chipset, 'Callistoga'; and Intel's next-gen. wireless solution
'Gaston'. Yonah is essentially two 'Dothan' cores plus a whole heap of
shared L2 cache. Callistoga appears to be a beefed up version of
'Alviso', the 'Grantsdale'-like mobile chipset that's due to appear in
Q1 2005. Callistoga is said to provide Alviso's 533MHz frontside bus,
PCI Express support, Hi-Def audio and 667MHz DDR 2, but with Serial
ATA II.
A year on from Napa, Intel is apparently lining up 'Santa Rosa', with
a new dual-core Pentium M, 'Merom'; chipset, 'Crestine'; and wireless
component, 'Gaston 2'. Merom may introduce HyperThreading to Pentium M
line, but will at least represent the next generation of core beyond
Dothan.

I don't know what
to say. Intel has gone and taken the ur-joke of the internet and made
it reality by incorporating a tablet PC into a surfboard, allowing pro
surfer Duncan Scott to literally, yes, surf the web. The laptop
is integrated into a Jools Matthews board and communicates via WiFi
with a hotspot on the beach. I fully expect to go outside now and find
a laptop built into the BQE with a huge arrow pointing to the
'Information Highway.'
