A Warning, but Clear? 04/11/2004 05:14 PM

The White House is trying to make the point to Americans that the new details about the Aug. 6, 2001, briefing add up to old news.

Just to be clear - after lauding Om 03/28/2005 08:45 AM

While we're on the subject of lauding Om, he seems to be a little confused over my contradictory attitude towards BrightCove.

How can I on one hand "compare them to Atom/Shockwave" and then declare them the winners?

Well remember - it's Accel Partners money - and boy do they have a lot of money to spend - so that's why I referred to a war of "attrition" - cause I just wanna see Jeremy spend Bud Colligan and Joe's Schoendorf's money - like there's no tomorrow.

Clearly Brightcave has a hell of a challenge to pull off what they're trying to do - but someone has got to do it. And Jeremy is actually a really nice guy, so..... good luck to BrightCove!

Clear concrete

Clear concrete 07/08/2004 10:48 AM
concrete2The Associated Press has an interesting article about the translucent concrete developed by Hungarian architect Aron Losonczi. During the mixing process, glass fibers are added to the traditional stone, cement, and water. This enables light to shine through the material. Several variations of the new material are on display as part of a National Building Museum exhibit called Liquid Stone: New Architecture in Concrete. Judging from the Web site, it looks to be a stunning exhibit. Link (to AP article) Link (to Liquid Stone) (Thanks, Gabe!)

Orkut embodies two of the weaknesses inherent in artificial social networks: it requires us to be clear and precise. Those are virtues when it comes to invoices and jury verdicts, but they are how real social networks are not built. The precision shows up in the digital choices we're given: Is Phil your friend or not? If he is, is he one-star, two-star or three-star sexy? Choices you are not given include: (i) Sort of sexy. (ii) Could be sexy if he dressed better. (iii) If I were a woman, I think I'd find him sort of sexy if I...

Still, we could sub in "Duct tape is like the good government: It is perfectly transparent and it holds the nation together." Link (via Cool Tools)

Office Depot Begins Electronic Recycling Program

"Office Depot offers to recycle electronics for free: This is a Very Good Thing. I'm not an Earth-muffin or anything, but old electronics do some really crappy things to the environment.

Don't be so quick to toss out your old PCs, fax machines or digital cameras — office supply retailer Office Depot is offering to recycle one electronic product a day for free all through the summer, according to a published report Tuesday. [...]

The offer includes all brands of electronics, and products including computer monitors, digital cameras, copiers, fax machines, cellphones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and TVs that are 27 inches or smaller, the report said.

'One product a day' means one product per person per day." [Gadgetopia]
