Download-To-Own Movies: Get Less For
More!
01/16/2004 01:03 PMYou may recall CinemaNow - the major studio backed online movie
downloading company - from the
review
in the NY Times last year which included such great quotes as:
"How CinemaNow stays in business is a marvel. The site is so marred by
typos and poor programming, it could have been a high school
sophomore's first Web design project." and "CinemaNow stand[s] out
primarily for [its] puny selection, poor video quality and overly
rigid copy protection." A ringing endorsement. Well, now it looks
like they're trying to adjust their business model, and instead of
just allowing people to watch movies for a limited time, they're
starting up a
"download-to-own"
feature complete with annoying copy protection (of course). As
with the download movie rentals, you get less for more. Now, instead
of actually owning a DVD that you can play anywhere on any machine
(and which comes with extras and perhaps a booklet with more info),
you get a digital copy of the movie that is completely clamped down on
the machine you downloaded it on. Also, the prices are
more
expensive than buying a DVD. A quick look at their featured choice
for "download-to-own" shows that you can get the same movie, brand
new, on DVD at Amazon for $3.75 less. They're also claiming that you
can now start watching a movie 30 seconds after it begins downloading.
If it really works well, that's great, but if it includes typical
video buffer loading pauses, I imagine it's not going to make many
movie renters happy.

Home movies
09/09/2004 08:09 PMOne of the more interesting developments in the 2004 presidential
campaign is the home movie phenomenon. First there was “Outfoxed,”
Robert Greenwald’s indictment of Rupert Murdoch’s fair and balanced
news channel, which opened not in a theater near you, but in your
neighbor’s house. And now we have “There’s Something About W,” a
damning, point-by-point critique of the havoc wreaked by the Bush
administration. Featuring the sober analysis of intelligent Bush
critics like Paul Krugman, Molly Ivins and Kevin Phillips and
enlivened by the one-liners of comedians like Will Durst and Al
Franken, the 40-minute documentary is a useful tool of political
persuasion for the swing-voter couple who lives down the street.
(Franken gets off the best shot: “During the 2000 campaign, when Bush
said he was against nation building, I didn’t realize he meant only
our nation.”)

Books >> Movies?
Books >> Movies?
03/17/2005 03:24 AMWe had a full house last night for an Oscar's party of sorts (TV is
upstairs in a little loft area so people weren't forced to
watch). I was sad because Titanic couldn't win again; it was
such a great film that they really ought to give it Best Picture every
year in perpetuity. I was confused when a neighbor sung the
praises of the movie Rushmore and its genius director, Wes
Anderson. The movie was fun but if there were profound ideas
in it, I'm not sure what they were. Books, on the other
hand, have been much more thought-provoking for me. Is
there any reason to expect that books are a better source of serious
thinking than movies? One possible theory is that people who
have profound thoughts shy away from the committee and group work
characteristic of filmmaking. Even if Joe Director finances a
film himself and has 100 percent authority he will still spend a
tremendous amount of time and effort communicating his ideas to
subordinates, many of whom will misunderstand what he says.
Thoughtful writers, by contrast, tend to be solitary figures who stay
at home in the Connecticut woods (Philip Roth, Edward Tufte).
One of our friends is a truly brilliant and original scientist (i.e.,
more or less average for Cambridge). This tenured professor says
"I don't like to read, write, or teach." What does he
enjoy doing? "I like to think."
Would anyone like to take up my neighbor's position that Rushmore
is as profound as any book?
Who WATCHES movies?
Who WATCHES movies?
09/09/2004 07:19 AM
Cory Doctorow:
The sterling satirists of Loading Ready Run have produced a sharp,
funny and amazingly true short film in response to the "Who makes
movies?" anti-piracy spots that we're subjected to before we see our
$10-13 flicks.
This spot, called "Who watches movies?" and features a graphic
designer talking about how grossly offensive it is to pay a stack of
money, sit through interminable advertisements, then be lectured at in
a film made by some distant coked-up Hollyweird fatcat.

David Pescovitz:
I'm disappointed that I missed catching a flick in a secret
cinema/restaurant below the streets of Paris. Police discovered the
theater--complete with electricity, CCTV security, and phone
lines--within an uncharted cavern in the city's 170 miles of tunnels
and caves. According to The Guardian, a full-size screen and projector
had been installed and police found "a wide variety of films,
including 1950s film noir classics and more recent thrillers." A
stocked bar and "pressure-cooker for making couscous" was also
discovered.
Three days later, when the police returned accompanied by
experts from the French electricity board to see where the power was
coming from, the phone and electricity lines had been cut and a note
was lying in the middle of the floor: "Do not," it said, "try to find
us."
