I have repeatedly finding myself turning to the otherwise unused Windows box on my desktop for filling in online forms. The primary reason has been the Tab behaviour in Web forms: on Windows, you can tab between text fields, menus, radio buttons, et al; on Safari/Firefox on Mac, you skip the menus entirely and have to reach for the mouse and click. And this contextual switch is costly.

Now apparently this is "fixed" by enabling System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Full keyboard access: "In windows and dialogs, press Tab to move the keyboard focus between: "Text boxes and lists only." Mea culpa.

I thought I'd clicked that long ago to no effect and a double-check finds that I was right. Despite the label "...and lists," it's only when you select "All controls" that tabbing to menus actually works in web forms. Mea culpa. Label culpa.

PC Mag reviews the Sony DCR-HC40 MiniDV camcorder, and despite some issues with the touch-screen controls, find the most important stuff -- image quality, battery life, and price -- to be very strong for a $700 camera. It has "intelligent accessory shoes" that can power an optional light or microphone, and it happens to have an internal lens cover, something I find highly appealing in the smaller throw-and-go camera segment. Still image cameras almost all have internal lens covers these days; I don't know why we expect anything different from camcorders.

Despite the ever-present push towards "smaller," there's nothing small about Sony's new "DCR-DVD301" DVD Handycam's screen. At first glance, it appears to be a standard DVD Handycam - same 1.4GB 8cm DVD writing, and more or less the same specifications - but when you look twice, you realize this new unit is equipped with a 3.5" LCD. Indeed, Sony has added a full inch in at least one area, which is more than anyone can ask, really.

"With great LCD screens comes great price," my uncle once said, and apparently he was right on target: you'll pay nearly $1,100 for this camera, presuming it gets released in America for a similar price as the Japanese market.

Sony's new DCR-PC350 MiniDV Handycam jams a 3.31-megapixel CCD into a compact shell that weighs less than a pound. Gott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar 4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a 7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.

The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be my next sidearm. So something happened to me while I was watching this video of the Sony PSP from the Tokyo Game Show. I think it was in the middle of the Darkstalkers game that I realized that all my worries about battery life, size, and durability were sort of moot, because I want to play portable games that look like that right now. I'm not ready to call it the next portable platform winner, but if they can eke more than the rumored 2-3 hours of play time out of that battery they've got a very good shot at stealing the majority market from Nintendo.

I should warn you: I'm sort of lukewarm on portable video players altogether. I don't commute to work, and when I did, there was enough jostling and train swapping to make anything that required focused attention, like reading books or watching video, a fractured and annoying experience. But still, there is an opportunity for a video player like the HMP-A1 to be useful -- I just don't think this would be the one I would buy.

So there's stink about this one possibly being a fake, but there's a new Sony hard disk-based video player on Japanese website CD Report that claims to have a 20GB hard drive crammed into a unit just a hair bigger than the iPod mini (hence, the fake rumors). If it is legit, it is supposed to be released sometime around Christmas for a price in the neighborhood of $450 - not a bad price if it ends up being the real deal.

Of course, Sony learned from the HMP-A1 that people might actually like players that could support native MP3 playback, so the new unit is rumored to have only ATRAC support (that means, basically, that this thing will be a dud as a music player).
