Engineered spider web

Engineered spider web 12/22/2004 01:30 AM
David Pescovitz: Scientists at Jerusalem's Hebrew University used synthetic biology to crank out spider web fibers in the lab. They introduced certain genes from garden spiders into a virus that was used to infect caterpillar cells. Spider fibers then formed in the cultured cells.
"The research enabled us to determine the close connection that exists between the sequence, structure and functions of the proteins," said (researcher Uri) Gat. "From a practical viewpoint, mass production of fibers, whose diameter is one-thousandth of a millimeter, is likely to be useful in the future for manufacture of bulletproof vests, surgical thread, micro-conductors, optical fibers and fishing rods; even new types of clothing may be envisioned."

07/01/2004 07:15 PM
BoingBoing reader Steve Portigal says, "Chiquita is looking at growing nanners with other fruit flavors embedded in them. Seems like they have the technology, but will it fly?" The ethical implications are terrifying. If they can genetically modify crops, humans can't be far off. That means one thing and one thing only: the dawn of banana-flavored babies. Link (via agendainc)

Update: Frankenbana-not? BoingBoing reader Matt Grommes says, "According to a few stories about this announcement like this one, Chiquita is denying that the bananas will be genetically engineered. Whether that's to get out from under the GM stigma early or the truth, who knows."

An In-vitro fertilization company in Australia is criticizing the board of a Melbourne hospital for the long delays in granting approval for two separate designer babies during the last two years. These designer babies are being engineered specifically to provide healing stem cells for a sibling, from their umbilical cords. Last year, while waiting for a decision from the hospital, a local couple naturally conceived a genetically-matching son. His stem cells were recently implanted in his dying sister, who is inflicted with Fanconi's anaemia, and her fate should be known within a few weeks. The more recent delay has been over another couple's child, who is believed to have sickle-cell anemia. Authorities have sought opinions from theologians, ethicists, and reproductive scientists while debating yesterday's decision to approve the procedure, after a year of discussion and hearings.

AMD64 Is The Force Behind Star Wars

AMD64 Is The Force Behind Star Wars 08/14/2004 06:53 PM
Thanks DjmUK

At Siggraph today, AMD announced that AMD Opteron™ processor-based servers and workstations are providing the digital backbone for the final Star Wars prequel, Episode III: “Revenge of the Sith.”

The AMD64 digital processing pipeline at JAK Films, the production company for Star Wars: Episode III, includes pre-visualization and pre-postproduction, which involves 3-D match moving, 3-D modeling, lighting, shading, texturing, compositing and rendering techniques. The AMD64 processor-based workstation systems are running Microsoft® Windows® XP Pro, Alias’ Maya and Adobe® After Effects software. AMD64 processor-based file server systems are running on clustered Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 software.

The full adoption of 64-bit capable AMD Opteron processor-based systems at JAK Films is the result of a long-standing relationship between AMD and the pioneering Pre-Visualization department at JAK Films. The relationship began during the making of Star Wars: Episode II and provided AMD with direct feedback from the world’s foremost digital content creators. JAK Films is now using AMD64 technology to reinvent the digital filmmaking process.
