MP3 Players Aren't Just For Kids; In
Fact They're Barely For Kids
12/19/2004 03:47 PMThe common bit of wisdom is that MP3s are a young person's technology.
It's the teens and the folks just coming out of college that are the
MP3 generation, after all, so they'd be the most likely to own an MP3
player, right? Not at all, apparently. A new study says that
90% of MP3 player
owners over 34 years old. While this
may have something to
do with the high price of many of the best MP3 players, the numbers
still don't seem right. It would be interesting to see the
methodology behind this study. That's not to say that those over 34
aren't likely to own an MP3 player, but it's hard to believe that
90% of MP3 players go to those 35 and older.

Presents For Bad Kids Head To eBay,
Rather Than Kids
12/27/2004 04:42 AMWell, normally, people wait until after they've received presents to
dump them on eBay. However, one father who felt his three sons were
being particularly bad lately decided that to punish them he's
putting their
presents up for sale on eBay. To be honest, this sounds like a
bit of a publicity stunt -- and it seems likely that, now that this is
getting attention, that casino that seems to be buying
e
very random
quirky auction item will snap this one up.
Update:
Whoops. It's apparently already happened. Indeed, the casino in
question has
d
ecided to buy the undelivered presents. This is sort of an update
on our story last year about how sellers were increasingly looking to
use
eBay as a publicity generating tool. It appears that's now being
used by
buyers to generate publicity, as well.

Microsoft, SAP And A Whole Bunch Of
Nothing
06/07/2004 01:56 PMWell, the press certainly loves this story for the headline alone, but
the details are a bit less than exciting. Everyone seems to be
rushing out stories about how
Microsoft and SAP had some merger talks last year, but gave
them up when they felt that the deal would be fairly complex (you
think?) and would have integration difficulties. Companies examine
the idea of merging with other companies on a fairly regular basis -
and most of those conversations go nowhere (fast). This seems to be
just one of those types of situations, which is just getting attention
due to the names involved. It doesn't sound like the conversations
ever got that far along (and you can imagine that antitrust folks
would had a field day if they had).

when I start the computer or loaded a word document windows would
appear like a program was trying to load. I thought it was spyware or
something. Turns out it is a bug in Norton Antivirus 2005 and here is
what I found.
I was getting the message in a popup dialog box that said. "Norton
Antivirus 2005 does not support repair feature reinstall Norton" , so
I do that and the problem goes away.
Then a couple of days later it pops up again. I go to the Symantec
support site and here is the solution to the issue and I am red in the
face.

I'm moving to England and selling off a
bunch of stuff
02/17/2004 11:47 AMI've got a lot of changes coming up in my life this year. At the end
of the month, I'm starting a one-month leave-of-absence from EFF, and
I'll be going off to Toronto to finish my next novel, "
Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town."
Then, starting on April 1, I'll be heading off to London, England, to
work for Creative Commons and EFF on a variety of projects:
- Responding to the EUIPR enforcement directive in Brussels
- Participating in the DVB standards-body in Geneva
- Working with large-scale UK open licensing projects
- Representing EFF at WIPO in Geneva
It's really exciting (and I'm really frazzled!), and, in answer to
some common questions:
- No, I'm sorry, I just don't have any time for dinner, drinks,
lunch, coffee or meetings before I leave San Francisco. Every moment
is spoken for. I'd love to see you at one of my book-signings, and
there's a chance that I'll throw a party before I go (watch this
space for details).
- I have a little bit of time in Toronto to hang out, but first
priority is going to be finishing my novel (which, have I mentioned,
is due at the end of March, eek!), seeing my family, and spending
quality time with my closest friends. I'll be working out what days I
have free time on after I touch down, and I'll post something here
once I've got that sorted out.
- I would love to talk to you about EFF's plans in Europe, and/or
socialize in London. Please drop me an email after April 2, once I'm
off my leave-of-absence, and we'll sort something out!
Anyway, the
other reason for this post is to let you know
that I'm selling off a bunch of stuff that I'm not storing or
shipping:
- A deco table lamp
- An iPod
- An iMic
- A bull-skull
- An iBook stand
- A fax machine/scanner/printer
- A Metro shelving unit
- A two-tub washing machine
- A queen-sized bed and frame (comfiest bed I ever slept in)
- A machine-washable rubber keyboard
I've put up a blog where I've listed all this stuff with prices,
descriptions and pictures. I'll be adding a few more items tonight if
I get the chance:
- A city bicycle
- Two Sony Dream Machine clock-radios
- An oil-filled radiator
It's all as-is/final/pickup in San Francisco (no shipping, sorry!).
Check out the blog for more details:

Democratic Party party
04/27/2004 11:36 AMQuite an action-packed day yesterday. I did two keynotes, at two
separate events. After the second one, I went back to the first event,
a gathering of about 125 people who run libraries and museums, because
I'm trying to write some stuff about metadata and taxonomies. I
learned, for example, that one well-known art museum has had to create
over 300 new Dewey Decimal categories for illustrated manuscripts ...
and one for astrology. Afterwards, I went to a cocktail party put on
by the hosts of the second event. It was quite the power party. I got

What I like,

Welcome Mail.app to the Party
04/09/2004 04:05 PMI have on several occasions dissed the Mac OS X email client
“Mail.app” fairly heavily in this space. I finally got myself
smoothly integrated with the Sun VPN, and I must report that the
latest release of Mail.app is now handling both my email lives (Sun
and Textuality) smoothly, efficiently, and with no fuss. The spam
filtering is failing a bit under the pressure, but is still pretty
darn good; and the filtering and styling and threading and so on is
really about all you could wish for. Another reason to think about
migrating to OS X.

05/14/2004 12:17 PMWhile evereyone else was out partying last night (Acteva also had a party) I was working to
change the world - bringing DLAs to the masses.
More on my efforts later.
But for now - congrats to Ev and Jason. I wonder if Orkut was
there?
Smells
like 1999.
Last night I attended the Blogger relaunch party at SF
26Mix. It was a pretty cool bash - and I mean the food, the music
and the locale were pretty trendy. What struck me was the names and
faces from the past, those who had become party regulars were all in
full force. Jay Shellen, Evan Williams and a whole bunch of
Blogger gang were in attendance, and so were the folks behind Craigslist, Newsmonster, Feedster and of course the queen of
valley gossip, Chris Nolan.
James and James of AmIhotornot were in attendance
as well.
It reminded me of the parties in 1999 when the dotcom madness was
in full swing. Lately I have been getting more of these party invites
and there seems to be a certain buzz, back in the air. The rentals in
San Francisco are inching up slowly, the traffic on Highway 101 is
turning into a weebit of a nightmare, and even magazines are trotting
out some familiar names. My magazine for instance has a story on Mary
Queen of the Net Meeker, Nick Denton of Gawker Media. and
a couple of others. Wired is having a NextFest. What makes it more like
1999, is the fact that a whole lot of journalists are talking about
blogging as their salvation (which may or may not be
true!) and quitting their jobs to do something with blogs.
Back in the day, they were talking about web as their escape key. I
think the hype machine around blogs is in high gear, and while it
might make some like Rafat Ali
or Nick Denton very rich, there is little or no hope for many of
us.
In short, it smells and feels like 1999. Let the party begin - free
vodka and canapes, hell I am not complaining.

Party in My Pants
03/08/2004 11:23 PMI'll admit it. There are nights that I want to feel "a little special,
naughty, and very sexy." But I'm not clear on how a pair of size 34
Minnie Mouse underpants makes that happen. (03-04)

In his most recent State of the Union address, President Bush
declared that governmnet "must work to counter the negative influence
of the culture."
Here at Music for America, we believe that it's up to us -- artists,
bands and fans -- to use our culture to counter the destructive
policies of this government.
It's time to bring the party back to politics

Why danah didn't come to the party
Why danah didn't come to the party
02/12/2004 03:20 PMHere's the picture that offended so many of the leading
bloggers. Man these people are seriously uptight. Marc says he never
pulled it. Right on. [Scripting

The cool thing about being at a conference where many of the people
attacking you are here in meatspace - is that you can clarify and
find out "what the hell it was that offended people do much?"
So when I talked to Cory (just now) he informed me that what really
ticked off danah - was that the photo didn't necessarily present an
appealing an environment for women to go and party.
The funny thing is that when I brought up danah's complaints to
these women who were at the party (admittedly NOT from our industry or
world) they broke out in laughter! "What sort of hangup does she
have?" they asked.
I expalined that danah was a young, brilliant researcher - who had
worked with V-Day and other women's issues - folks understood why
danah night be upset.
But that doesn't mean that women don't have fun at parties doing
all sorts of crazy things. In fact I could have SWORN I saw
danah last night...... [oooops I'm telling no tales....]
I'm just saying I posted that photo for folks to
'think' that the party would be fun. If
danah didn't, then guess what? - she didn't have to come. And
she didn't.

Party like it's 1892! "Executive
power and patronage have been used to corrupt our legislatures and
defeat the will of the people, and plutocracy has thereby been
enthroned upon the ruins of democracy."*
In the late 1800s, the
Popul
ist Party, or People's Party, formed to merge the Farmers Alliance
message of economic empowerment for growers with the Knights of
Labor's movement to check the growing power and corrupt practices of
big business
(along with the Greenbacks Party critiques of
monetary policy). With a strong base in the midwest and
south, the party earned 9% of the 1892 popular vote,
won the presidential electoral votes of four states (not
to mention electing 10 congressmen, 5 senators, 3 governors, and 1,500
state legislators). However the party's power quickly faded as
the Democratic Party co-opted much of the
Populist platform
while
internal
disputes culminated in the Populists placing the Dems' 1896
nominee at the head of their own ticket. Nevertheless, the populist
movement's influence continued to be felt through various 20th century
reforms including
direct
election of senators,
presidential term limits, and
abandonment of the gold standard.
