About a month ago, Microsoft posted some of its source code to SourceForge. SourceForge is a, if not the, major distribution point for open source software. Microsoft's code was put there under the terms of the Common Public License, which allows modification, addition, redistribution - in short, it allows most of the rights and privileges that we associate with open source software.

Microsoft open to open source 06/24/2004 12:49 PM
Microsoft Corp. says it is looking to turn over more of its programs to open-source software developers, playing a greater role in a process that the Redmond company has criticized strongly at times in the past. Money-makers like the company's Windows operating system and Office productivity suite aren't on the table -- or anywhere near it. But the company has so far released two software-development tools to the open-source community, and it wants to continue the practice, a Microsoft platform manager told an industry group this week.

TORONTO -- Day 2 of the KMDI Open Source conference started with Robert F. Young, cofounder of Red Hat, Inc. presenting a positive view about open source business models. At the end of a conference day lasting nearly 13 hours, Young returned to deliver the conference's keynote address. In between, Jason Matusow of Microsoft's Shared Source Initiative gave attendees a very differernt point of view about the value of open source in the enterprise. No real surprises there.

Too many open source advocates complain about Microsoft writing terrible buggy software and think that open source developers do it better. The truth is Microsoft is innovative, has vision, and executes well. If open source developers can do as well as Microsoft, it's a big compliment. Smart people like Miguel de Icaza and Brendan Eich have known this for a long time. Miguel has a reality check for these innocent virgins.

Brendan (one of the Mozilla leads) has a frank assessment of Mozilla too. I talked about this last year.

Two weeks ago, I wondered out loud about the top 10 worst IT business decisions ever made and nominated HP's decision to follow DEC down the road to oblivion for top spot. Today I'd like to suggest that the U.S. Defense Department's continued use of Microsoft's software is likely to top a future list of this kind. The equation here is simple. First, recognize that Microsoft's software security depends crucially on keeping its source code secret. That's not a comment from an anti-Microsoft bigot -- it's the testimony given under oath by Microsoft vice president Jim Allchin. Even limited release of Microsoft's code, Allchin told judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly's federal court in May 2002, would threaten national security because the code is both seriously flawed and widely used in the Defense Department. But consider that only nine months later, in February 2003, Microsoft announced an agreement giving communist China full access to the source code for Windows and related tools.

Can Open Source Catch Microsoft By The
Horn?

How exactly do you stop a much awaited, overly hyped software release from the billion dollar Redmond giant Microsoft? The Open Source front has no definite strategy on how to catch the raging bull by its ‘Longhorn’, but is closely following the “If you cant beat ‘em, join ‘em” mantra. Microsoft’s Longhorn release is slated for 2006, and the Linux desktop segment is in the firing line to be gored in its tracks. With a gradually developing market, the acceptance of Linux at the desktop level is still relatively low, and the last thing that Linux vendors need is a new OS from Microsoft.

Microsoft Trying To Convince VCs That
Open Source = Fraud
02/19/2004 02:46 AM
Venture capitalist Tim Oren has posted an excerpt from an email sent to a venture capitalist mailing advertising a seminar, put on by Microsoft, about the dangers of open source technology. By itself, that's no surprise, but the language in the email is fairly over the top, claiming that some potential acquiring companies "view open source as being no different than fraud on the books." That's probably true if the "acquiring companies" are Microsoft and SCO. Otherwise, most companies look at it from the reasonable standpoint: does the technology do the job it needs to do? Anyway, does this sort of stuff actually convince any company or any VC that they shouldn't go with open source technology if it does the job? If so, would you really want to invest in or buy such a company so easily swayed by such arguments?

Microsoft Talks Tough About Open Source

Microsoft Talks Tough About Open Source 05/25/2004 11:46 AM
A top official of Microsoft last week claimed that governments that support open source software are not helping build a viable software ecosystem in their communities. Chris Sharp, director for platform strategy for Microsoft in the Asia-Pacific and Greater China region, said governments that standardize on open source software are hurting their local commercial software vendor communities because these companies are being robbed of opportunities to make money that they need to invest in developing more software products.
