Is the economic drought over?
Is the economic drought over?
03/06/2004 01:57 AMI've spent a bit of time over the last two years searching through my
cobweb shrouded memories of the lectures of one of the best teachers I
ever had and trying read the entrails of the economy and predict when
the hi-tech rebound would start, all without success. We finally shut
down our company last year, and I have been parenting, travelling,
writing and doing a bit of consulting since. Until recently, the Bay
Area economy and the high-tech economy seemed mired in the doldrums.
However, recently my personal economic barometer has suddenly moved
from calm to hurricane. Last week I got two phone calls from old
colleagues about jobs, as well as a couple of calls from recruiters,
something that used to be an almost daily nuisance, then didn't happen
at all for two years. This week I have 3 meetings to discuss
employment opportunities, one that I sought out, the two others that
sought me out. I certainly hope that this is a sign of things to come
for the Bay Area economy and hi-tech. As Glenn Fleishman once said,
"Whenever I get busy, my blog dwindles. You can practically draw a
revenue/work graph line against frequency of posts. ... If you don't
hear much from me, congratulate me. I must be doing well. " To
complete the parade of cliches, I'm not counting my chickens before
they hatch, but I expect that postings will be light in the immediate
future, and I hope they will continue to be light for a while....

12/17/2004 06:36 PMPicked up a copy of The Onion on the street corner in
Manhattan and enjoyed this entry, headline "Tibetan Teen Getting into
Western Philosophy":
LHASA, TIBET—Deng Hsu, 14, said Monday that he is "totally getting
into Western philosophy." "I've been reading a lot of Kant, Descartes,
and Hegel, and it's blowing my mind," Hsu said. "It's so exotic and
exciting, not like all that Buddhist 'being is desire and desire is
suffering' shit my parents have been cramming down my throat all my
life. Most of the kids in my school have never even heard of Hume's
views on objectivity or Locke's tabula rasa." Hsu said he hopes
to one day make an exodus to north London to visit the birthplace of
John Stuart Mill.

08/29/2004 10:56 AMOnce again, I find myself writing on the eve of an Apple event, and as
the exhibitors set up and the attendees arrive, I’m left to sit on the
other side of the Atlantic Ocean and speculate.
However, while this should, by all means, be the most exciting event
in recent recollection, it just doesn't seem to have the anticipation
it should. Maybe it’s me, but the imminent release of a new iMac
should be generating quite a bit more rumors and discussion that it
has.
The only related rumor came in the form of specs from Think Secret on
Aug. 13, and if it hadn’t come from Apple itself, I wouldn’t even
believe a new iMac was even on the horizon.
I mean, this is a new iMac people… the computer that has consistently
put Apple on the map and twice redefined personal computing as we know
it. It’s a cultural icon, a household world; the only blip on the
consumer desktop radar worth mentioning over the last few years.
For the first time, Apple fans actually have something tangible to
look forward to, and we’re speechless.
So, maybe it’s all a trick. Maybe there’s no iMac coming Tuesday, and
maybe Apple has pulled the wool over everyone’s eyes as Steve sits in
a hospital somewhere watching it all.
I mean, how many companies can make headlines by
not releasing something?
Seriously, though, the iMac is coming, and perhaps a few other
surprises as well. For one, rumors have been popping up that a new
iSight camera is due. Save the addition of a magnetic mount (so as to
not muck up the new displays with sticky residue), the iSight hasn’t
seen an update since its introduction last year. So what about this
scenario:
Phil Schiller takes the stage at 10 a.m. and begins the normal rundown
of the iPod, iTunes and G5 stats, takes another look at Tiger and its
new features, and introduces the new iSight to accompany the new iChat
AV, walks over to a 2.5GHz G5, launches iChat, sets up his new
higher-resolution iSight, and connects to a fully-recovered Steve Jobs
at his home in California.
And of course, Steve proceeds to unveil the new iMac.
Or, Steve could simply walk out sometime in the middle of Phil’s
presentation.
Or. MacCentral could be wrong, and Steve’s actually prepping his
speech as you read this.
Whatever the case, it brings me back to my original question, which is
why? Why hasn’t speculation been running rampant at Spymac? Sure, “The
Official Spymac iMac Prediction Thread” has been running strong for
some time now, but where are the wild rumors? Where’s the conspiracy
theory and the search for specs?
Is it me, or was more excitement for last year’s Bluetooth mouse!?!?
With just 40 hours or so remaining, I’m still waiting for a rumor
that’ll really get my attention — like the 17-inch PowerBook
blurb from MacRumors just before MacWorld San Francisco in 2003; or
(ahem) the iWalk hype before the iPod; or even the mock-ups of the
first flat panel iMac.
So, let’s get going people! Are we gonna let Apple taken the fun out
of pre-expo supposition by telling us what’s coming? Are we gonna take
that?
