HR Outsourcing: Big companies are making
the shift from in-house to outsourcing
05/31/2004 01:47 PMAccording to a new study, the world’s largest companies were more
inclined to outsource HR functions in 2003 than in 2002. And if they
weren’t outsourcing at the time of the latest survey, most were
thinking about it. Another finding: Those who are outsourcing are, for
the most part, happy in their choice. However, while outsourcing
increased in many areas, such as 401 K plans and call centers, it
decreased slightly in recruiting. In this article, MedZilla interviews
the survey’s author and reports on its findings. [PRWEB May 28, 2004]

urce your job to earn more! - The Times of India: This cannot be
legit. Please tell me this isn't true.
Says a programmer on Slashdot.org who outsourced his job: "About a
year ago I hired a developer in India to do my job. I pay him $12,000
out of the $67,000 I get. He's happy to have the work. I'm happy that
I have to work only 90 minutes a day just supervising the code. My
employer thinks I'm telecommuting. Now I'm considering getting a
second job and doing the same thing."
Smarter techies are working for three to four companies at the same
time, outsourcing all the coding and just supervising them for few
hours a day. This way they are able to earn four to five time more
than what they used to.

"The NY Times reports that even restaurant jobs
are not immune to outsourcing. Pull into the drive-through of a
McDonald's just off U.S. 55 near Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and the
person taking your order is more than 900 miles away in a Colorado
Springs call center. A McDonald's IT VP says it is 'way, way too
early' to tell if the call center idea would work across the chain's
13,000 U.S. restaurants." The claim is that by centralizing this
service, it reduces the error rates and gets people through the
drive-through faster -- though, it's not entirely clear why that's
true.

Outsourcing comes to Iraq. Interesting article from the WP
(login req'd, get one
here) about workers from countries such as India and South
Korea, subcontracted by American companies, notably the ever-infamous
Halliburtun. Effectively turned into indentured servants, these
workers not only endure work conditions that American workers would
never tolerate, but they do it in a war zone.
"Rep. Janice D.
Schakowsky (D-Ill.) said contractors' use of multiple layers of
subcontracts makes it difficult for the U.S. government to ensure the
fair treatment of the workers it effectively employs." Pink on outsourcing
