Collaboration across 120 years yields

In 1882, astronomer David Peck Todd shot 147 consecutive plates of the transit of Venus across the night sky. Now, two modern astronomers at the Lick Observatory have scanned them and turned them into a Quicktime movie -- a film "shot" years before Edison made his first moving picture. This makes me wonder if we'll be able to pull off neat tricks like imrpovising stereoscopic, moving, and/or panoramic images of the present at some time in the future, say by pulling thousands of moblogged images of a single event off the net and using software to interpolate and assemble them.

Spurred by a reference in one of Todd's letters in Lick's Mary Lea Shane Archives, Bill Sheehan and I found all 147 negatives, still in good condition, at the observatory. To our knowledge, this collection of photos constitutes the most complete surviving record of a historical transit of Venus.

As we looked at Todd's extensive sequence of images, we realized we could turn them into a movie. A similar thought may have occurred to Todd himself, for a number of his contemporaries were already making the first forays into chronophotography — the recording of sequential motion and the forerunner of cinematography. Indeed, Pierre Jules Janssen invented his famous photographic revolver to capture the 1874 transit of Venus.

Update: The Slashdot discussion< /a> points to even older examples of this, like animations of Gal ileo's 1613 sunspot drawings.

The latest Hollywood friendly law to be proposed by some Senators who have strong Hollywood financial backing would make it a felony to take a video camera into a movie theater or to put a film up on the internet, with penalties including up to five years in jail. Of course, we already have copyright law that covers this particular crime, but that's not enough for folks in Hollywood who seem to believe that the more you criminalize, the more people will want to pay you. Now, clearly, videotaping a film in the theater or putting it on the internet is illegal. But, I don't see how it requires a new law, or how anyone could possibly justify five years in prison for the action. The bill won't go anywhere as it's being introduced just as the session is ending, but it is likely to show up again next year. It will be interesting to see what happens when video cameras on mobile phones become more common. Will people be prevented from taking their phones into the theater as well? If someone wants to record a brief clip to send to a friend (which could be seen as promoting the film) will they get tossed in jail?

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Yesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were whini ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize that going to the movies is a social experience. It's not just about the content (though, that is important), but the overall experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go -- even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that story pointed to an article in China noting that this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done. After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience, putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

AP - In a community where everyone is over 55, it's fitting that Mayor Dorothy Geeben's age has made her a celebrity of sorts. At 96, Geeben may be the nation's oldest mayor. She's so well- liked in her the retirement community of nearly 1,000 that no one is opposing her re-election this week, and her next two-year term will last through the end of 2006, or nine months past her 98th birthday.
