The Man who Invented Metadata
The Man who Invented Metadata
10/29/2003 12:12 AM I just gave a talk at the first Ascential user conference. I was
talking mainly about how metadata is rooted in human desire.
Afterwards, Bernard Plagman approached me and struck up a
conversation. He apparently is the person who coined the term
"metadata" in an article in 1971. Back when he wrote Data
Dictionary/Directory Systems (Wiley, 1974), it was necessary to argue
that metadata ought to be managed the same way data is. And now, a
short 30 years later, metadata is the new data....

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PMYesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were
whini
ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting
their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize
that going to the movies is a
social experience. It's not just
about the content (though, that is important), but the overall
experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go --
even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap
DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to
entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that
story pointed to an article in China noting that
this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done.
After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made
going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience,
putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved
the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made
some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away
from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in
Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

03/24/2005 11:29 AMCory Doctorow:
Great history of the early days of Japanese typewriters:
The time was ripe for a Japanese typewriter, but the daunting
structure of the written language, with its multiple scripts and
thousands of characters, stymied early attempts to develop one. Into
the breach stepped inventor Sugimoto Kyota (1882-1972), often hailed
as the Edison of Japan. Sugimoto began by studying the relative
frequency of individual kanji, eventually arriving at a minimum set of
some 2,400 characters (unabridged Japanese character dictionaries list
as many as 50,000).

Time Wonders, Who Invented Warchalking?
and Other Howlers
Time Wonders, Who Invented Warchalking?
and Other Howlers
11/10/2003 10:55 PMIn a short piece on warchalking, writer fails the test: The author of
this article in Time magazine finds a warchalk symbol (so he
says...I've yet to see one in the wild), and writes a good, short
piece about it. Good until he notes, Nobody knows who invented
warchalking. This reminds me of some of the lines from my favorite
canceled sci-fi animated series, Futurama, set 1,000 years in the
future. We're in the present, so I type who invented warchalking into
Google, and most of the matches explain precisely, as is well known,
Matt Jones invented it. He designed the sign, spread the meme, posted
a PDF with the graphics in it. I wrote about him and warchalking for
The New York Times, in fact. Hilariously, the 2nd match on Google
right now is this Time article. They have a lot of inbound links does
Time magazine. Time published a huge package of wireless stories about
a week ago. They come off as a little bland to me, because I know
everything that's in them. To an audience that knows little or nothing
about Wi-Fi, I'm sure this sounds much more exciting. But it reads
like circa 2002 newspaper coverage. The articles all have some missed
notes, too, mostly in the technical and statistical details. In an
article detailing business use of Wi-Fi, this statistic is thrown in:
a surprisingly small number of U.S. firms that have installed wi-fi
networks. Fewer than 5% of U.S. workers use them today, according to
an estimate by Gartner, a high-tech research firm. Unfortunately, the
author has confused five percent of workers with five percent of
companies. In this News.com article from a few days ago, the reporter
presents an array of statistics on business use, including overall
industry sales figures, and cites Jupitermedia's number: 57 percent of
businesses are using Wi-Fi already to some degree. (Damn, I even know
that magazine reporter; we worked on our college paper together.)
Given that companies like Microsoft and Novell have thousands of
workers -- basically everyone with a laptop -- using Wi-Fi all the
time all day everywhere on campus, that five percent of all workers is
the mobile, laptop-connected five percent. What percentage of U.S.
workers have computers at all? What percentage have laptops? That
would better contextualize the number. Maryanne Murray Buechner's
pieces, including this FAQ, are quite excellent, offering sensible
accurate advice...

03/17/2005 03:24 AMWe had a full house last night for an Oscar's party of sorts (TV is
upstairs in a little loft area so people weren't forced to
watch). I was sad because Titanic couldn't win again; it was
such a great film that they really ought to give it Best Picture every
year in perpetuity. I was confused when a neighbor sung the
praises of the movie Rushmore and its genius director, Wes
Anderson. The movie was fun but if there were profound ideas
in it, I'm not sure what they were. Books, on the other
hand, have been much more thought-provoking for me. Is
there any reason to expect that books are a better source of serious
thinking than movies? One possible theory is that people who
have profound thoughts shy away from the committee and group work
characteristic of filmmaking. Even if Joe Director finances a
film himself and has 100 percent authority he will still spend a
tremendous amount of time and effort communicating his ideas to
subordinates, many of whom will misunderstand what he says.
Thoughtful writers, by contrast, tend to be solitary figures who stay
at home in the Connecticut woods (Philip Roth, Edward Tufte).
One of our friends is a truly brilliant and original scientist (i.e.,
more or less average for Cambridge). This tenured professor says
"I don't like to read, write, or teach." What does he
enjoy doing? "I like to think."
Would anyone like to take up my neighbor's position that Rushmore
is as profound as any book?

Know
12/22/2004 01:26 AMAuthor Scott Kelby has written an easy-to-read book that any serious
Adobe Photoshop user is sure to want on their desk for easy access to
the more than 100 “classic” Photoshop projects.
Step-by-step, Kelby walks the reader through techniques that result in
the stunning, professional effects that you see everyday in magazines,
on billboards, in newspapers and on the Internet. Examples of the
projects include using one photo as the background and focal point;
creating chrome bevelled type; tinting black and white photos and
creating reflections and various shadowing techniques. Kelby states
simply that “these are the effects your clients expect you to know if
you are a professional Photoshop user”.
Kelby, editor of Photoshop User magazine and author of several
bestselling Photoshop books, has cut the learning time dramatically
for newer users of the program. Photoshop Classic Effects doesn’t
require you to work through one tutorial after another, but enables
you to easily find the project you’re interested in using, which is
why you’ll want to keep it handy for future reference. Kelby has used
language throughout the book that is easy to understand and provides
the user commands for both Mac and Windows platforms.
The book is beautifully illustrated with full color photographs by
Brand X Pictures. If you want to follow along using the same photos
Kelby used in his projects, the low-res images are available for
download at http://www.scottkelbybooks.com/classicphotos.
If you’re interested in this book, but still undecided whether to make
the purchase, you might want to try a few of Kelby’s samples for
yourself. Publisher Peach Pit Press has included some of the author’s
step-by-step projects on a tip sheet which is available for download

01/04/2005 01:07 PMThe Surprising
Legacy of Y2K: It turns out there were some very surprising
secondary effects of the Y2K panic. I will admit to having never
considered any of these — in my mind, Y2K was a huge hole into
which companies poured money to no benefit other than the acute
problem avoidance.
[...] it was probably responsible for the rise of the
Indian offshore IT boom. It also resulted in big productivity gains as
decades of cruft were removed from datacenters during the fixes. For
example, when the NY Stock Exchange was able to reassmble its systems
six days after 9/11, it was because of the Y2K-related work they'd
done.

Grid-Accelerated After Effects
Grid-Accelerated After Effects
02/10/2004 02:49 AMAdobe is teaming up with GridIron Software to
produce a (relatively) low-cost grid accelerated version of After
Effects.
Adding GridIron's XLR8 technology to After Effects — which
produces motion graphics and other effects for film and the web
— will allow users to use processor time on other computers on
the network to shorten rendering & preview times. According to
GridIron, the benefits of adding grid technology will be dramatic:
The bundled grid technology is expected to provide linear
performance improvement, so preview and rendering will be completed
nearly twice as fast on two computers than on one, three times as fast
on three computers, and so on. Setting up a grid to achieve this
increased speed is accomplished by installing the GridIron XLR8 and
After Effects software components and connecting the computers
together via a network.
This is the first time that grid technology has been put in reach
of small to medium businesses, and it supposedly takes few special
skills to set up and operate. And the possibilities that this opens up
for applying the technology to other Adobe applications... There is
hope for us who spend too much waiting for rasterizing and rendering
operations!
See the press release on GridIron's website.
