Apple reponds to Trojan Horse threat

Apple reponds to Trojan Horse threat 04/09/2004 05:20 PM
Apple has responded to the Trojan Horse security advisory issued by Intego on Thursday. "We are aware of the potential issue identified by Intego and are working proactively to investigate it," Apple said in a statement. "While no operating system can be completely secure from all threats, Apple has an excellent track record of identifying and rapidly correcting potential vulnerabilities."

Intego has also posted a Q&A page, which includes some misinformation.

Intego Exaggerated the Trojan

Intego Exaggerated the Trojan 04/09/2004 06:47 PM
An article over at Wired states that Intego has blown this whole Trojan problem out of proportion. According to experts, The Trojan (mentioned here and here) "...isn't a working piece of malicious code and can't easily be spread to other computers. Instead, it is a demonstration of a possible threat." In response, Intego has apparently changed their story from that of attacking an imminent threat to preparing for a future threat.

"It is a benign proof of concept that was posted to a newsgroup. It isn't in the wild, and can't be spread in the wild. It's a non-issue." ~ Dave Schroeder

For the second time in just over a month, Macintosh security company, Intego has issued an advisory warning customers of a Trojan Horse (AS.MW2004.Trojan) on Mac OS X. The latest advisory, posted to the company's Web site on Wednesday, warns of a Trojan Horse downloaded from the LimeWire peer-to-peer network -- the file had an icon that appeared to be an installer for Microsoft Office 2004. Microsoft warned users of downloading from sources other than them and analysts even question using the term "Trojan" for the advisory.

VoIP As The Trojan Horse For Broadband?

VoIP As The Trojan Horse For Broadband? 01/04/2005 05:40 PM
While many telcos are somewhat dreading how VoIP will cut into their cash cow voice revenue, some are suggesting telcos need to take a radically different view of VoIP. The key ingredient, though, is realizing they're not telcos, but broadband providers (something Verizon has said -- but it's not clear if they fully realize this yet). Then, VoIP can act as a trojan horse for broadband. The thinking is that nearly all of telco customers have voice service, but a small percentage get broadband from them (if they get it from anyone). However, if telcos offered to swap out regular phone service for VoIP without the corresponding internet service, they would also have the data service ready to go if the customer ever wanted it. That is, it's easier to convince people just to switch from a traditional phone line to VoIP (especially since its cheaper) than to convince them to sign up for broadband and VoIP. Basically, they'd be offering a broadband offering that isn't an internet service -- just for VoIP. However, everything would be set up for internet and other services, so if a user wanted to switch on the ISP side, they could do so with a single request, rather than any installation work. It's certainly an interesting approach, but it's not likely that the telcos will move in this direction any time soon.

What The Trojan Horse Defense Will Mean
For The Legal World

What The Trojan Horse Defense Will Mean
For The Legal World
01/19/2004 03:04 PM
We've discussed the trojan horse defense before - and described how it's been used to get suspects off the hook for breakin g into servers, child porn and tax fraud. However, there haven't been that many serious discussions about what the use of the trojan horse defense will really mean for computer crimes in the future. The way the trojan horse defense works, is that anyone who is accused of a computer crime claims that someone else hacked into their machine, and placed software on the machine that did whatever bad thing they're accused of doing. Using this defense seems to work well - even in very questionable cases (such as the hacking case, where no trojan was found - or the tax fraud case where the fraud only happened on the tax preparers own accounts, despite the fact that he prepared plenty of other tax returns as well without any problems). Now, former Justice Department computer crime head, Mark Rasch is looking at the longer term effects of the trojan horse defense. He points out what's especially frightening about the defense is that it could very well be true. So, you suddenly have a situation where people can get incorrectly accused of computer crimes - while at the same time, real computer criminals can get off by using the defense themselves. He also predicts that computer criminals will increasingly use this knowledge for computer extortion. This brings up, again, the issue of whether or not we should have technical courts to handle such cases, rather than just relying on "technical experts" brought in to explain situations (who often do more to confuse the issue, than to clarify it).
