Remixing creativity
Remixing creativity
05/27/2004 05:05 PMCC staff favorite and Magnatune
artist, Brad Sucks recently
started releasing the
source to his most popular song, Making Me Nervous, and asking
folks to contribute remixes. Like the Jim's Big Ego
remix project we're got going on here (which can get your remix
onto national radio), Brad's now got six remixes (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) and
someone making a
video for the original.
It's pretty cool when artists open up the process to their fans,
and let creativity flourish. Heck, even a commercial success like
Jay-Z can see there
's money to be made in providing remixes that provide eventual
benefit to both remixers and the original artists.

Remixing Google's Search Results
Remixing Google's Search Results
06/02/2004 11:07 PMIt appears that there are a lot of folks out there who are trying to
"remix" Google's interface. The one that got the most press, of
course, was A9, who
built an
entirely new interface to searching Google. Then, there's
Prog (formerly
Proogle), which adds in PageRank info to Google search results. Now
comes the news of
an application called
MoreGoogle, which tries to add additional features to the Google
interface to make it more useful. I haven't tried it (and some folks
may be a bit wary to download a random app and let it hijack their
Google searches), but the article suggests that the author of the
program just wanted to make the Google interface more useful. Once
the program is installed, it basically watches over any Google
searches, and alters the results to make them more useful: adding in
thumbnail images of the website and adding an "open in new window
button." The application adds in some new text ads, that appear to be
part of AdSense (this isn't clearly explained) in order to get some
money back for altering the Google interface. Obviously it would be
pretty simple for Google to add these features themselves, and it's
unclear how legit this particular app really is, but it's still very
cool to see people trying to "remix" Google results to make them more
valuable. Of course, there's a pretty good chance that Google's
lawyers might not find it as cool.

Remixing "Construction Kits" are the
future of the music industry?
04/23/2004 04:26 PMInspired by the Jay-Z Construction Set (a CDROM and .torrent full of
Jay-Z vocal tracks, samples and art, intended for remixture), Ernest
Miller has written a shrewd editorial about a potential path for
musicians to engage their fans with their work through the release of
similar kits -- he likens this to videogames that encourage players to
invest in making or seeking out custom mods.
Many videogames permit players to create new content for the game
engine, such as levels, maps and mods. This new content is freely
distributable (at least for noncommercial purposes) and frequently
incorporates content created by the original game designer along with
new user-created content. This has been incredibly successful for
videogame companies. The more content there is, the more popular the
game becomes. The ability to create and add content creates feverish
and committed communities of fans for a game. Imagine if musicians had
such communities working for them.

Companies Who Can't Take A Joke, But Can
Push A Lie
Companies Who Can't Take A Joke, But Can
Push A Lie
02/12/2004 02:16 PMIt's no secret that, on the internet, if you don't like something and
try to get it taken down, you're only going to draw a lot more
attention to it. However, corporations still haven't gotten this
message. They seem to get especially annoyed at parodies, complaining
that people might be tricked by them. Here's an article that takes
these companies to task for
not being
able to take a joke, while at the same time having so-called
"independent" organizations that are paid by them set up advocacy
websites that are nothing more than a front for the company or group
in question. In other words, companies get upset about advocacy that
goes against them and try to force the sites down, worrying that
people will get "confused." At the same time, they're hiding the fact
that they're behind these other advocacy sites (which, some might say
is confusing readers, as well). As the writer of the article points
out, even if they're right, they're doing themselves harm by not being
upfront and honest about these sites: "The more successful the
strategy in the short term, the more it will eventually corrode trust
in the long. People persuaded by such sites will feel betrayed when it
becomes evident they were duped. And it won't even matter if the
pseudo sites have truth on their side: when a messenger is exposed as
an impostor, their credibility is destroyed." Another example of
short-term thinking from corporations that do them much more damage in
the long term.

04/01/2005 05:24 PMJust foolishness. The XML Binary Characterization Working Group has

nails it. I
don’t care if anyone wants to go off and produce their own data
interchange format, binary or not, open or not, standardized or not,
mapped to XML or not; as long as they don’t call it XML. “Binary
XML” is an oxymoron. And I should point out that the people at Sun
who are building a binary data format with a mapping to XML are
calling it
something
else entirely. These Binary-XML people are charging headlong onto
the top of a very long, very steep, very slippery slope.

Don Park on the Google IPO
Don Park on the Google IPO
08/21/2004 03:48 AM
Don asks what's the big deal.
His point of view is interesting.
It's very true that Google has failed to keep up with the
"search engine optimization" tricks that cause links to porn sites to
show up on our Referers pages and blog post comments. As we've said
here several times, and thought many more, Google is the place where
this practice should be stopped. It's because of Google that our sites
are littered with links to these offensive sites that have nothing
to do with ours. If they're smart enough to come up with tricks
like Google News and Local Google, why can't their search engine
recognize comment and referer spam and not use it in determining page
rank? Of course they can. Why don't they? I'd love to hear an
explanation. Better yet, I'd love to see them fix it. It's a bug in
Google's software.
Maybe secretly Google really doesn't like blogs. Maybe it's not
so secret. They still haven't deigned to support the standard format
for syndication, as every other tech company and major publisher has.
Why Google has a stake in breaking the standard is another puzzle. How
does this relate to Don't Be Evil. We've asked this question a few
times, only to be met with the usual Google stone wall.
This is not a public company but they have public stock now.
And while they think they're real special, like Don Park, I'm not so
sure they are. I made $800 on my Google stock yesterday, that paid for
my hotel and gas and then some. But I'm paying for their deafness in
other, imho more important ways. This is a company that desperately
needs competition, and I hope they rise to it, instead of folding, as
the previous Silicon Valley wunderkind (with the same backers) did.
