Journal of Research in International
Educationhttp://jri.sagepub.com/The Journal of Research in International Education is an
international, peer-reviewed journal in international education
published in collaboration with the International Baccalaureate
Organization (IBO) and its partner schools, examiners and higher
education institutions throughout the world. The Journal of Research
in International Education seeks to advance the understanding and
significance of international education. It sets out to undertake a
rigorous consideration of the educational implications of the
fundamental relationship between human unity and human diversity that
'education for international understanding' requires. The JRIE
encourages an approach to research in international education that
will close the gap between the well established emergent theory and
diverse practice throughout the world. In this context, international
education is concerned with the promotion of education for
international understanding and human rights, and may include peace
education, global education and intercultural education. Authors may
address, for example, the curriculum, institutional concerns, the
history of education, policy and pedagogy at all levels. This will be

Support our troops, question our

03/19/2003 10:25 PMI have read various calls today for people to support our troops by
stopping demonstrating, stopping questioning our (supposed) leaders,
and stopping being against the war. What
ridiculous nonsense.
While I agree that it would be
despicable to repeat the folly
of
some Vietnam era protesters who took out their anger about
the United States government's Vietnam folly on the soldiers who
fought it, the best way to support our troops is to question our
leaders.
Our troops are the sons and daughters of America, and it is our
government that is wagering their lives. Our Congress effectively
abdicated its constitutional responsibilities last fall. It would be
unpatriotic of us
not to question what the administration is
doing with our children's lives, and not to protest if we think that
our children's lives are being misspent. Backing us up is the
authority of Dubya's favorite president, who said:
To announce that there must be no criticism of the
president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is
not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the
American public.
Theodore
Roosevelt
Or there is that other famous dissident, Abraham Lincoln, who
protested that the Mexican-American war was an
unnecessary and unconstitutional war of conquest, designed to add more
slave states to the union. He was right, of course. It was a direct
precursor to our Civil War.
The United States has a long and glorious history of dissent to war.
Let's support our troops and our country by ensuring that it
continues.

Will Gmail support International

06/19/2004 04:53 PMMy wife has a Hotmail account that is defaulted to Japanese. She
got tired of Outlook acting weird and sometimes not converting the
incoming message correctly or when she would send a e-mail and the
receiver getting junk characters.
So I set her up a Hotmail account and she now has no issues getting
or sending Japanese e-mail. Well I was able to score her a Gmail
account last week and after we got it setup we went looking for
language options. From everything we could see volunteers had already
done the language translation as a volunteer page said it as 100%
done. But there was no way to turn on Japanese as the default
language. It appears they will have a international language option
but for now it is only English if anyone has figured out how to change
the default language we would appreciate a e-mail to shokoc at
gmail.com
Her first reaction to Gmail and she is not a techie is that it is a
lot faster than Hotmail and will be switching as soon as they enable
International characters.

support our troops -- send them your
GMail invites!
support our troops -- send them your
GMail invites!
06/18/2004 12:15 AMI keep reading about how morale is very low in Iraq and Afghanistan,
and how men and women in both theaters are having their tours extended
long beyond when they expected to come home. Thankfully, many of our
soldiers are able to stay in touch with friends and family via the
Internet . . . which brings me to the point of this post.
WWdN reader Drew sent me the following note earlier today:
I will send you an invitation for the hard to get Gmail if you post
something on your site telling others to give their invites to troops
in Iraq and Afghanistan. See, Google gives 1 gig of email space,
perfect for movies and pictures from home, but it's invite only. When
you get an account you will get invites too, and if you could pass
them along to those who need em that would rule.
I think this is a fantastic idea, and an easy, but very powerful way
for many of us to help support our troops.
GMail gives users
1 GIG of
free storage space, which is more than enough for pictures, movies,
sound files . . . all sorts of things that could help our servicemen
and women feel a little closer to home.
The thing about GMail is that it's currently invite-only, so I
e-mailed Drew back, and asked him if he had some sort of clearinghouse
set up for soldiers to submit requests for invites. He responded:
No, but about 10 of us are trolling www.gmailswap.com looking for
folks in the military. See, once you talk to one of them, they pass an
email along to fellows stationed with them, so we're just trying to
dole them out as we get the request.
There's no way to know how long Gmail will be invite only, but SGT Tim
Knowles in Afghanistan said that good morale is hard to come by out
there and in Iraq, and the guys are buzzing about the possibilities of
1 gig. They all seem to have hotmail and well it's weak.
I'm going to look into getting a site together or at least a list.
Of course, there are epic assholes online who will pose as soldiers so
they can get invites, but I think it's completely worth the risk.
So here is your challenge, WWdN readers: go forth, and seek out
soldiers who could use GMail invites. Help spread the word about this
effort, and keep checking back here for a link to the soon-to-be-built
clearinghouse for requests. If you're a designer, and you would like
to donate some time, or a host who would like to donate some space and
/ or bandwidth, send me an e-mail and I'll pass it along to Drew. If
you're a reporter, maybe you'd like to do a story about a bunch of
nerds who are working to do something cool to support our troops. If
you're a Google employee, maybe you'd like to come up with a way to
ensure that members of the armed services can get GMail acocunts, no
matter what. If you're a fellow blogger, you can link this post, or
the clearinghouse website when it goes live.
And of course, if you're a GMail account-holder, you can use those
invites that are piling up (I've sent out six in the last week) to do
something really cool for some people who are making an incredible
sacrifice right now.
