Flawed Online Searches Cost Businesses $31 Billion Last Year
http://www.emarke ter.com/Article.aspx?1002877

Amid the excitement with search advertising revenue growth and the upcoming Google IPO, a study finds US executives dissatisfied with the performance of online search engines.
According to a survey released by FIND/SVP, 84% of business executives feel that Web searches -- using the generally consumer-centric search engines now available --take longer than they should due to poor results. It is estimated that the loss of productive time using search engines to conduct online research cost businesses $31 billion last year. The study found that that not only are 71% of business executives frustrated with consumer search engines, 74% are not even confident that the results are reliable. However, despite this lack of confidence, 67% stated it would be difficult or impossible to do their jobs without Web-based search tools. Business professionals also question the reliability of search information, with 52% only "somewhat confident" that results originate from credible sources.

Interesting article and it just happens that FIND/SVP announces their "new" business search engine this week!! Hmmmm......

Laziness

Laziness 05/20/2004 12:52 PM
I've been essentially doing nothing today.

Well, I did save my flowers by changing new soil for them.

But that's pretty much it.

And yeah, I did write a Pinseri-RSS-to-changes.xml -converter, so we might soon get all Finnish blogs in Technorati.

But nothing else.

Perhaps a couple games of go on KGS.

Otherwise, I've been doing nothing.

Except writing a bunch of emails.

And blogging.

But nothing else. I swear!

Well, I did eat. And vacuum the apartment.

But that doesn't count, does it? I mean, it's cleaning - it's like doing nothing useful. Things get dirty again real soon. Eating is also something you have to do. So that doesn't count either.

Ok... Then answer me this:

If I did nothing, why am I so bloody tired and out of my wits now? It's as if I had just been doing something really exhausting...

The $5.8 billion graphic design industry has over 16,000 individual businesses (each averaging about four employees), as well as 80,000 freelancers, and spends more than $400 million annually on capital goods, according to a new study to be published by Strategies for Management, Inc. Entitled “The U.S. Graphic Design Business 2004-2009,” the report will provide an accurate snapshot of the current state of the U.S. graphic design business, and offer forecasts about its future changes and growth. Slated for completion by October 2004, the study is a “must have” research tool for any firm selling to the graphic design community; Strategies for Management, is now soliciting “early bird discount” sponsors. Protracted defense of laziness

Protracted defense of laziness 08/07/2004 05:30 AM
This weekend's Guardian has a long, fun excerpt from Tom Hodgkinson's forthcoming "How To Be Idle."
As Sherlock Holmes knew. Lolling around in his smoking jacket, puffing his pipe, Holmes would sit and ponder for hours on a tricky case. In one superb story, the opium-drenched The Man With The Twisted Lip, Holmes solves yet another case with ease. An incredulous Mr Plod character muses: "I wish I knew how you reach your results," to which Holmes replies: "I reached this one by sitting upon five pillows and consuming an ounce of shag."

Rene Descartes, in the 17th century, was similarly addicted to inactivity. Indeed, it was absolutely at the centre of his philosophy. When young and studying with the Jesuits, he was unable to get up in the morning. They would throw buckets of cold water over him and he would turn over and go back to sleep.

Snow Induced Laziness

Snow Induced Laziness 02/07/2003 10:52 PM

Twelve inches of snow has fallen here in Massachusetts. It's a light snow. Someone told me it was perfect for skiing, but I tend to find it perfect for relaxing indoors watching old favorites. But then again, I'm not a skier.

I'm pretty sure Total Choice Hosting is going to be my new webhost soon. They have a good reseller program, and a great price at twenty clams a month. They came recommended by Noel, and I've read many good things about them. For those of you with slightly more money to spare than myself, Hard Hat Hosting seems to be a really good provider run by some good people. I'd still like recommendations on hosting providers if you have them, I still have a couple days to make up my mind.
