Google backlash
03/14/2005 06:21 PMThis was to be expected. The poor Ilkka Pöyry who has
filed a defamation suit against Jani of Mummila.net has been
Googlebombed. So, if you now search Google for
Ilkka Pöyry
you will end up in the Finnish blogs and can now read the whole story.
The name "Ilkka Pöyry" is now permanently (well, nearly
anyway) linked to this incident, and because of the fact that bloggers
have started to chew on it, it will only gain more Googlejuice as time
goes on. And that will be very, very, very hard to remove from the
Internet. Especially now that US and Swedish websites have latched
onto the story, the word is out.
As I said, suing highly interconnected bloggers in world where
search engines are the kings, is not a very smart tactic, if you want
to keep your name clean. Even if, as in this case, the outrage is
mostly around the police overstepping their boundaries, and not on the
defamation suit itself.
I don't want to say that bloggers are a community, but bloggers in
general should be aware of their power and the responsibility that
comes with it: an angry mob can cause hard damage to people (as
witnessed in the USA with bloggers "hunting for scalps").
One blog may be insignificant, but in mass blogs can be a force
to be reckoned with. Which can be dangerous.

Preparing for the Inevitable
Preparing for the Inevitable
01/06/2005 02:45 PM
Death is not news to Buddhist monks. The
mi
nute observation and contemplation of corpses is a standard
Buddhist practice to
increase
awareness of the transitory nature of all things (including you,
gentle reader.) This friendly attitude toward what is hidden away in
most of the "civilized" world has prepared monks in the
tsunami-stricken nations to deal with the task of cremating thousands
of dead bodies. Preparing for the inevitable turns out to be a useful
tool for facing the unthinkable. [via a fine new site called

The Inevitable Collision System
The Inevitable Collision System
11/04/2003 11:02 AMAs mobile robots get bigger and more powerful, the need to prevent
them
from bumping into things becomes more important. Impact bumpers won't
cut it on a robot the size of a car. A NewScientist.com
article describes the Inevitable Collision System (ICS), a
collision-avoidance system designed by French and Japanese reseachers.
Thierry
Fraichard presented a paper on the system at the recent IROS
conference. ICS works
by continuously calculating an exclusion zone around the robot
representing a region in which a collision would be unavoidable, no
matter what evasive action the robot took. While the ICS paper is not
yet available to the public, Fraichard's earlier paper on the
Inevitable
Collision States (Post Script format) is.

The inevitable demise of meetup.com
The inevitable demise of meetup.com
04/14/2005 07:31 PMIn the beginning was a great idea: let’s create a Web site that
makes it easy for people with similar interests to find each other and
coordinate face-to-face meetings. And so Meetup.com was born, and
grew, and grew. Along the way it became part of the massive, amorphous
“social networking” set of companies (which includes
LinkedIn, Orkut, Ryze and most famously Friendster. All of these
companies now face the same challenge that hit thousands of…

Commentary: PeopleSoft: Ease The
Inevitable (BusinessWeek Online)
09/17/2004 04:01 PMBusinessWeek Online - For more than a year, PeopleSoft Inc. CEO Craig
Conway has battled to prevent Oracle Corp.'s Larry Ellison from
grabbing his company in a hostile takeover. Now, Conway's spirited
quest has absorbed a potentially fatal blow: On Sept. 9, U.S. District
Court Judge Vaughn R. Walker ruled that the Justice Dept. had no
grounds to block the acquisition. While the European Community could
still stop it, the legal case for halting this shotgun wedding is
looking weaker by the day.

Entertainment Industry And Wireless
Carriers Upset About The Inevitable
09/16/2004 11:27 AMFor years, we've been saying that a true "Napster for mobile phones"
was on the way, but the recording industry and (most) wireless
carriers continued to put their head in the sand and think that mobile
phones were somehow different than computers. This wasn't a
particularly hard lesson to learn from just a few years ago, but both
industries have an incredibly large set of blinders that they seem to
wear. So, in the last few weeks as news spread about both
SK
Telecom and
Nokia
a> developing file sharing apps -- neither of which uses copy
protection -- the industries were again taken by surprise. In
response to these developments, they are fighting back by...
complaining. Rather than actually dealing with the issue they're out
talking
about how such developments could be disastrous to their money making
plans and how they shouldn't be allowed to continue. In other
words, they're acting like buggy makers freaked out that someone is
building cars and saying it shouldn't be allowed. While it
was
a bit surprising that the first developments came from
large
industry players, if the entertainment industry and the carriers
somehow convince the large companies to back down on their plans, have
no fear that smaller players will fill the void. The shortsightedness
of so many companies in both industries continues to amaze.
