How Do You Definitively Uninstall
Windows Software?

How Do You Definitively Uninstall
Windows Software?
02/05/2005 09:16 PM

How do you completely remove an application from a Windows machine? (Warning: this post will give Mac users a gratuitous chance to gloat.)

Windows has a tendency to scatter apps to the four corners of your hard drive when you install (see thi s). Installing some apps is roughly akin to firing a shotgun through a bag of granulated sugar onto deep pile carpeting. The question then becomes, how do you impersonate a vacuum cleaner?

When I want to make sure I've really gotten rid of a Windows app, here's what I do:

  1. Uninstall from Add/Remove Programs
  2. Run "msconfig" and look for anything that might be related to the program that auto-starts, including Windows Services
  3. Reboot
  4. Search for and delete the Program Files folder
  5. Search for and delete any related folders in the "Local Settings" and "Application Data" folders in my profile
  6. Search for and delete any related registry keys
  7. Search for and delete any related environment variables
  8. Search for and delete any related Start Menu items

Anyone else want to offer suggestions?

Cable Installer burns down home after

Cable Installer burns down home after
faulty Install
01/05/2005 10:32 PM

I have what is known as a smart home network, phone, fiber etc in every room. This house is truly wired we wanted it that way. When it came time to hook it up to the rest of the world we had a contract cable installer come in. He was not very happy with me trailing him all over the place. But when he found was having 10baseT problems and I pulled out my network analyzer he kinda opened up. He was one of the few installers that I have had that had a clue and wasn't just being paid minimum wage that had just finished a 8 hour indoc class.

But it seems a family out east had the worst experience one could imagine. The installer burned their condo down. [Techdirt< /a>] [turnto 10]

Symantec Finally Ditches Faulty
Antivirus Bounceback Spam

Symantec Finally Ditches Faulty
Antivirus Bounceback Spam
05/11/2004 06:09 PM
We first mentioned this problem nearly a year ago, though others have been talking about it for longer. Email viruses these days tend to spoof the "from" address and make it either something random or someone else's address from the same addressbook they're spamming. Since so many network antivirus systems have been setup to alert the sender if they're sending a virus, this means plenty of innocent people get slamm ed with antivirus spam from antivirus systems telling them they sent out a virus - when they did no such thing. Symantec seems to have finally gotten the message and agreed to make their antivirus systems stop sending back email warnings. Other antivirus vendors are expected to follow suit.

Microsoft: No IA64 for Windows XP

Microsoft: No IA64 for Windows XP 12/27/2004 03:35 PM
After removing all references to the 64-bit (IA64) Windows XP here, we've spoken to sources close to the company who have confirmed Microsoft's intensions to axe XP IA64. The company wants to focus on Windows Server 2003 editions of Itanium-based systems.

Q: What about Windows XP for Itanium? Is Microsoft still continuing work around that version?

A: Microsoft is excited about the opportunity that x64 technology affords. Because Windows on x64 systems delivers excellent flexibility and choice, while also enabling a smooth migration from 32-bit to 64bit applications, Microsoft believes Windows for Itanium-based systems is a stronger offering in the high-end server market. As such, Microsoft has made the decision to focus its investments in research and development on this new x64 (64-bit extended) architecture and discontinue further investments in the Itanium architecture for workstations.

It is important to emphasize that Microsoft will continue to promote and offer Windows Server 2003 Enterprise and Datacenter Editions for Itanium-based systems, intended for customers who require the highest levels of scalability. For the mainstream server and workstation markets, however, we believe we can best serve our customers needs with Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 Edition, and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, respectively.

So if you were wondering about what happened to Itanium 64bit Windows XP, there's your answer.
