Freeware Port Scanners: Plug the Holes
06/11/2004 11:17 AMA port is essentially an opening into your computer, and it can be
hacked. Someone can infect your machine with a Trojan horse in this
way, and that's only one of a host of distressing possibilities. If
you open your computer to the outside world, you're vulnerable to
attack -- period. Port-scanning software tests your network to
determine which TCP ports are vulnerable to attack.

01/16/2004 11:02 AM Minor Washington state quake. It's been a while since I've
experienced and earthquake, so when tonight's little one hit my
hometown (a mere 3.2) I was a little shocked (and a little excited).
I was also really impressed with the seemingly instantaneous response
by the USGS and the University of Washington's GeoPhysics Dept. on
their websites classifying it.
In the
olden-days (eg- pre-Internet) I'd have to wait for the
early morning news to find out any information about it, but through
the miracle of HTTP I have all the info I want mere seconds after the
event. In fact, less than 15 minutes after the quake the USGS site
had over 260 responses on their website about the quake from people
who felt it and left comments on their site.
I wonder if there are other sites that help classify and/or
disseminate information about other naturally occurring phenomenon
(hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.)... anyone, anyone?

Jon Udell: Extreme design versus extreme
programming
06/18/2002 08:16 AMI've just returned from the What's Next conference in Brattleboro,
Vermont, where I gave a pair of talks (one on web services, one on
application servers). The keynote speaker for the day was Alan Cooper,
designer of Visual Basic, author of several books, and founder of a
company that specializes in interaction design.
Cooper's view is that the kinds of disasters that have always plagued
the industry -- most recently, the catastrophic outcomes of many CRM
(customer relationship management) systems -- are a result neither of
poor strategy, nor of poor engineering, but of a failure to properly
coordinate the two. The missing piece in his view is product planning
and design, done according to a methodology that Cooper has devised
and that his company practices. This methodology aligns itself with
Colonel John Boyd's OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) loop,
fashionable in military circles.

Aria Digital A-6000: DAB Radio for Your
PC
06/09/2004 10:57 AM
Aria Digital has a new DAB
radio out, this one made specifically for use with PCs or laptops over
USB, called the A-6000. It follows Aria's "Global DAB" policy, too,
which means that it uses both of the primary DAB bands (Band 111 and
L-Band), allowing you to pick up DAB broadcasts pretty much anywhere
they are sprayed out. It has both USB and SPDIF outs, and can record
to MPEG2, MP3, or WAV, as well as work with the Electronic Programme
Guide (like a DAB TiVo) for recording any shows you might miss. It's
currently shipping for about £100.

01/07/2004 05:02 PMNew Toys: Nokia 6600.

I'm starting this year with a brand new phone. For the last 8
months I used a Sony Ericsson T68i, but I've been disappointed by this
phone. It's true that considering the feature-set it was cheap, but
the fact that I had to reset it every few calls because for some
reason it randomly stopped working made it a pretty poor
phone.
So I went back to Nokia, buying a
6600. This
has been a totally weblog-driven purchase: I picked the 6600 after
reading
Joi Ito's and especially
Russel Beattie's
weblogs.
It took a while to get it working properly with my Mac
(it's not supported by iSync), but after some googling I got it to
synchronize with my Address Book (pictures associated with people in
the address book are sent to the phone, cool) and I can get on-line
via bluetooth/GPRS with my PowerBook on the road.
The built-in
camera seems to be almost usable: I can take a picture and send it via
email right away, which is kind of cool. The included Opera browser
works pretty well and the screen is big enough to let you do some web
surfing directly on the phone.
Another cool feature is the
ability to use any midi file as a ring-tone and ring-tones can be
associated with specific users or groups. I guess I'll let people in
my address book choose which song they want to be associated with when
they call ;-)
