Trilobite Vs. Roomba: The Mystery
Revealed
06/01/2004 01:53 PM

trilobite20.jpg imageEver wonder why the Trilobite 2.0 robotic vacuum is about $1,800 when you can get a good ol' American Roomba for as low as $160? Turns out, it's because the Roomba is, as robots are judged, pretty dumb. One of I4U's readers with a degree in human computer interaction and artificial intelligence wrote a nice piece about some of the major differences between the two robot vacuums, which he compares to the difference between a "Trabant versus a Rolls." Unfortunately, without one of them fancy AI degrees, the Roomba is the one I can afford.

JVC's Mystery Hard Drive Camcorders
Revealed: They're Hard Drive Camcorders
09/14/2004 11:18 AM

jvc_hdd_cams.jpg imageOops, I almost forgot about these new cameras announced from JVC - the ones they've been hyping up to no end as their big "mystery product." Basically, they're camcorders with hard drives in them - a 4GB microdrive, to be exact. They look pretty cool and everything, but they're really most interesting because they are the first consumer camcorder with a built-in hard drive, not because they do anything particularly unique. That being said, I fully support this idea, and think most consumer recording technology should move to hard drives as soon as possible (I'll be waiting until you can get something with a bigger hard drive than 4GB for less than $1,500, though).

Both models (the GZ-MC100 and the GZ-MC200) can record up to 9Mbps in MPEG2, though, which is DVD quality.

David "SD8957" Chait has a less cynical take on the new camcorders, along with more stats and pictures.

Oak Island Mystery

Oak Island Mystery 01/16/2004 11:02 AM
Oak Island is one of the greatest treasur e hunting mysteries of the last 400 years. The Money Pit as it is called, has stirred up a bevy of questions including how this simple pit has alluded treasure hunters and scientists to this day. Some believe that it might be the location of the Holy Grail, stashed by the Templar Knights. Other's believe that it might be the resting place of Sir Francis Bacon's original plays acreditted to William Shakespear. The most common belief is that The pirate Captain Kidd hid his huge stash of gold deep within the pit which accounts for all of the unusual traps. The scientists were unable to capture the foot-long create for closer study.
"Although the unknown animal is "kind of a sensation," (researcher Olav Rune) Godoe said in an interview, finding new and strange creatures wasn't surprising given that researchers collected more than 80,000 specimens. Moreover, little is known about the deep ocean. "It's much easier to observe the surface of the moon or Mars," said Godoe."

Shoes203Pairs of shoes are mysteriously being dumped outside a farmhouse in Lincolnshire, England. Since December, more than a dozen have shown up on the side of the road, usually on Sunday. According to the BBC, "some of the shoes are cheap, with price labels of £1.99 attached and some are more expensive designer brands."
The (Foster family who live nearby) have video footage, which shows an elderly couple driving by in a green vehicle depositing the shoes.

Mrs Foster said that although it was scary at first, she was rather hoping some of the pairs might fit.

The Mystery of Making Things Up

The Mystery of Making Things Up 08/29/2004 02:12 PM
Welcome to the Lizard Motel. Barbara Feinberg's new book is both a memoir of certain childhood memories and an indictment against the dismal state of books for young adults. Feinberg became concerned when her two children, once avid readers, became agitated at the prospect of reading the current crop of assigned literature for the upcoming school year. Curious, she started reading these books for herself, and discovered that, by and large, they were all examples of "problem literature," stories intended to educate children about the cold, harsh realities of life.

Her conclusion: "We seem to have lost sight of what children can actually process, and more important, of their own innate capacities. Instead of our children being free to roam and dream and invent on their own timetable, and to read about children doing such things, we increasingly ask our children to be sober and hard-working at every turn, to take detailed notes on their required texts with Talmudic attention, to endure computer-generated tests. "

Yet such books are are ever so popular with educators.

Why? And what books to MeFites recall from their formative years? What makes for good reading for children?

MT Educational Licensing Still a Bit of
a Mystery

MT Educational Licensing Still a Bit of
a Mystery
06/16/2004 04:41 PM

More MT Licensing

"If you look through the new MT Licenses, you may end up on the bottom of the Education Pricing, where you will find:

'Are you a librarian seeking to run Movable Type at your branch? We can work with you to create a custom proposal for your local or regional library system based on your needs and budget. Simply contact us to let us know how you wish to use Movable Type within your library.'

I wrote up a description of what we are doing with the software to see what sort of pricing information is available. I have yet to go through all the open-source alternatives, but I haven’t found one yet that leaped out as me as exactly what I want to move to. MT offers some flexibility that I just haven’t found anywhere else. And if the offer is reasonable, I won’t hesitate to go to our Director and make a case.

But if it isn’t, I won’t hesitate to settle on an alternative. I will write later about what is ultimately decided." [LibraryPlanet.com]

When the dust settles around here (we're concentrating all our energies on our merger with the Chicago Multitype Library System on July 1), I think I'll write up SLS' current setup for member MT blogs just to see what Six Apart comes back with. However, I'm not hopeful since money is very tight at Illinois Library Systems these days, so even a fairly small fee most likely won't help us. I'll be interested to see what alternatives other libraries use.

"A new style," "A new look," "4GB," and "MPEG-2."

Though these details could be describing a new type of turkey sandwich, the general consensus thus far is some sort of new palm-sized video camera from the company. More info is scheduled to be announced on September 19th; I personally hope it's a turkey sandwich.
