Leading the charge to alter the state constitution to restrict marriage in Massachusetts to one man and one woman is none other than the Governor, Mitt Romney. Mitt's a Mormon (one of the many splinter sects of christianity). You remember the Mormons, right? They're the group that triggered the passage of the original federal (and many state) marriage laws in the first place because of that whole polygamy thing... This could just be ~150 years of payback, I suppose. (I'm not sure that getting the support of gay groups in the 1800s would've done much for their cause)...

Anti-Americanism

Anti-Americanism 09/15/2004 05:19 PM
The World's Most Dangerous Ideas: U.S. and European goals on most issues are quite similar. Both want a peaceful world free from terror, with open trade, growing freedom, and civilized codes of conduct. A Europe that charts its own course just to mark its differences from the United States threatens to fracture global efforts—whether on trade, proliferation, or the Middle East. Europe is too disunited to achieve its goals without the United States; it can only ensure that America’s plans don’t succeed. The result will be a world that muddles along, with the constant danger that unattended problems will flare up disastrously. Instead of win-win, it will be lose-lose—for Europe, for the United States, and for the world.

Lies, Damn Lies And Telephone Calls

Lies, Damn Lies And Telephone Calls 02/12/2004 02:44 AM
You would think that, if someone needed to tell a lie, they'd prefer to do so over email, where they wouldn't let their voice betray them. However, a new study says that people are more likely to lie over the telephone than over email. Amazingly, email-based lies were at the bottom of the list. People told the most lies over the telephone, the second most face-to-face, followed up by instant messages and email last. Maybe that's why people are tryin g to fight parking tickets via the phone. Apparently, there's just something truthful about email. The basic theory by the researcher, though, is that people tell lies by voice because there's no record of what they said - and it can vanish into thin air and be disputed later. They also lie more during live conversations because they're put on the spot and don't have time to think through a good answer. That certainly makes some amount of sense. Of course, the other theory (which I like best) is that the subjects for this study lied in giving their results...

Lies, Damn Lies And Technology

Lies, Damn Lies And Technology 05/12/2004 05:13 PM
A few months ago we wrote about how one guy predicted that 3G mobile phones would never take off because the camera phone part would make it difficult to lie about where you were. We had no idea that most people used their mobile phones to lie about their location (or that that single factor would damn the entire product category). However, apparently the lying segment of the population is out there, and they've got money to spend, so solutions started cropping up, including a way to put fake image backgrounds into camera phone images to make people think you're somewhere you're not and (even more impressive) fake audio sounds to complete the faux imagery. There are even (apparently) bars that have fake office backdrops for camera phone enabled workers sneaking out for a drink. Douglas Rushkoff is now wondering about all this technological effort put into helping us lie better and wonders if it really shows how technology advancements make us more truthful. All these efforts show that people now need to make much more of an effort to be dishonest, which makes it even clearer (perhaps to themselves as well) how much they are lying. In fact, Rushkoff believes that such enforced honesty should be seen as an opportunity for people, rather than as a reason to avoid the technology altogether.

Terrorist incidents actually ROSE in 2003, but the State Department's "Patt erns of Global Terrorism" report, issued April 29 (see Appendix G for an easy chart), said the exact opposite. Senior Bush administration officials immediately hailed it as objective proof that they were winning the war on terrorism. The report is considered the authoritative yardstick of the prevalence of terrorist activity around the world. Reports like this one were all over the news in April--will the fact that it was a lie be reported as widely? And can we trust anything this administration says anymore?

Gentoo - Now with More Irony

Gentoo - Now with More Irony 06/17/2005 03:45 PM

Daniel Robbins, the founder of my beloved Gentoo Linux, bowed out of the Gentoo community last year, setting up a non-profit organization to responsibly manage Gentoo and all of the intellectual property that surrounds it. He, along with others, created a very popular Linux distribution that provides unique benefits over the other offerings that are available. Unfortunately, open-source alone wasn't paying the bills, and Daniel had to find other work.

Mr. Robbins began his new job late last month. With Microsoft:

Gentoo founder and former Gentoo Chief Architect Daniel Robbins began a new position at Microsoft on 23 May 2005. According to drobbins: "I'm helping Microsoft to understand Open Source and community-based projects." While in the midst of hastily packing to move to Redmond, [Robbins] nonetheless managed to find the time to finalize the transfer of Gentoo's intellectual property (essentially copyrights on ebuilds and other software as well as soon-to-be trademarked Gentoo logos) to the not-for-profit Gentoo Foundation, Inc.

Best of luck to him, but it strikes me that without Gentoo, I might not have gotten rid of most of the Microsoft products that I owned. I just hope that "helping Microsoft understand open source" doesn't mean "unwittingly helping Microsoft understand how to get rid of the 'open source problem'".

Eric Eldred of NH parked his Internet Bookmobile in the parking lot at Walden Pond (an irony in itself when you think about it) and started giving out free copies of Thoreau's Walden. He was told to leave or face arrest. Jonathan Zittrain of Da Berkman is supplying legal advise. And, yes, this is the same Eldred who asked the Supreme Court to get Sonny Bono spinning in his grave. Damn troublemaker! (I noticed the article first because of the picture of Eldred wearing his Creative Commons t-shirt, the very one I happen to have on today. Too cosmic! Oh,...

Legal abortion tips the voter balance from Democrat to Republican. That's Larry Eastland's theory. Abortion has caused missing Democrats--and missing liberals. For advocates so fundamentally committed to changing the face of conservative America, liberals have been remarkably blind to the fact that every day the abortions they advocate dramatically decrease their power to do so.

This is the second in a series of essays about the book Naked Lunch, designed to introduce the book properly to new readers. Generally, people hear about the life of William Burroughs before they read any of his work. The goal of these essays is to point out the more important aspects of the work, rather than the man. This essay will deal with the use of irony and satire in Burroughs' work, and the way he uses them to highlight the hypocrisy of his time.
