Linux customer indemnification: Vendors
take diverse approaches
06/04/2004 12:18 PMSince the SCO Group began threatening to sue organizations that run
Linux, some commercial Linux vendors have stepped forward to assure
customers that they would protect their interests should the court
find in SCO's favor. While it's still an open question whether anyone
will ever need such indemnification, major vendors Novell,
Hewlett-Packard, and Red Hat have programs in place to protect their
customers.

03/17/2005 03:26 AMNew Approaches To Television Archiving by Jeff
Uboisht
tp://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue10_3/ubois/index.htmlAbstract:Worldwide, more than 30
million hours of unique television programming are broadcast every
year, yet only a tiny fraction of it is preserved for future
reference, and only a fraction of that preserved footage is publicly
accessible. Most television broadcasts are simply lost forever, though
television archivists have been working to preserve selected programs
for fifty years. Recent reductions in the cost of storage of digital
video could allow preservation of this portion of our culture for a
small fraction of the worldwide library budget, and improvements in
the distribution of online video could enable much greater
collaboration between archival institutions.

Winter approaches in Alaska
Winter approaches in Alaska
12/17/2004 06:36 PMA friend in Alaska sent this email in response to a postcard from
warm sunny Greece:
"So, you are there...and... well...we are here... in the snow,
sleet, rain, pestilence, fog, and darkness. What more can be
said? The dogs are howling, the bears are hibernating, and we
are hunkered in our camp, slowly cooking cassoulet while riding out
the storm. In fact, it has been so bad here that one of our
local judges, Sam Adams, age 47, died of a heart attack while on a
moose hunt a week ago, and he had to stay put with his hunting party
for a few days before the clouds could clear and the plane could
land. Can you imagine being one of the guys around the fire,
wondering whether to put cards in Sam's hand, or look for another
moose, etc."

Approaches for the too-many-tabs problem
Approaches for the too-many-tabs problem
12/02/2003 01:27 AM
I've seen various, slightly differing solutions to the
too-many-tabs-to-fit problem recently. Amazon does a "more tabs" thing
at the right, the new AOL has an embedded tab scrolling thing (the
tabs that are not embedded don't scroll, thus allowing for a selection
of more important tabs that are always visible), and SAP has a
scrolling tab solution without the tabs that stay (couldn't find a
screenshot...). Point to other solutions in the comments and I'll add
screenshots.
It seems like the too-many-tabs problem is slowly coalescing
towards a standard solution for websites.
I've seen the Mac solution below being used on a weblog at one
point, but I can't find it anymore. Anyone?

edge.wharton.upenn.edu/article/971.cfmAfter adapting
information technology to develop ever more sophisticated research
methods, marketers are taking a second look at more human, qualitative
approaches to tapping into the hearts and minds of consumers. As one
Wharton marketing professor says: "We can put each customer's order on
a microchip, but as far as having a sense of what's inside making him
tick," the answers remain elusive. He and others suggest that
companies use both qualitative methods - such as data mining - and
quantitative methods, ranging from "concept banks" to "brand
communities" to customer advisory boards, always keeping in mind the
cost effectiveness of these varied approaches.

People are What?...
On technology and song lyrics...
On technology and song lyrics...
01/24/2004 07:18 PMI love it when technology creeps from innovation to ubiquity. Or -
more to the point - I love that very first set of transitions, when
you're watching a movie or a TV show and suddenly for the first time
they're actually using e-mail or talking about Googling someone. In analysing the
sensation, I keep coming back to a mingling of a few different
experiences - one is of a private world becoming public, one is of
elation and approval and one is (weirdly) a sensation of vindication
(even if the technology has been around for years). I suppose there's
something profoundly reassuring about seeing your strange habits and
vocabulary represented to the world as being totally normal - exotic
or cool even - particularly when it's done in a form that hundreds of
thousands of people might encounter. Maybe it's a bit like being
accepted at school or something.
Here's an example of one of those moments, from a medium (rock song
lyrics) that isn't exactly known for its take-up and referencing of
breaking technologies:
My phone's on vibrate for you
Electroclash is karaoke too
I try to dance, Britney Spears
I guess I'm getting on in years
My phone's on vibrate for you
God knows what all these new drugs do
I guess to have no more fears
But still I always end up in tears
My phone's on vibrate for you
But still I never ever feel from you
Pinocchio's now a boy
Who wants to turn back into a toy
So call me
Call me in the morning
Call me in the night
So call me
Call me anytime you like
My phone's on vibrate for you
For you [Vibrate

Wainwright]

Mario and Zelda Big Band: NES music with

06/19/2004 01:25 AMSomeone just posted a track by the "Mario and Zelda Big Band" on a
private file-sharing site I'm on. This is a Japanese big band fronted
by a singer whose delivery reminds me of the frontwoman for Orquesta
De La Luz (my favorite Japanese salsa band), and backed by a huge horn
and winds section. They've got a CD of a live performance of music
from classic Nintendo games, with invented Japanese words and super
tight Latin jazz melodies. I've just ordered the scorchingly expensive
CD and while I wait for it to arrive, I guess I'll just keep this one
track in heavy rotation. It's fantastic.

X.Org is set to release a new
version of their X11 server tomorrow (X11 is the system that drives
the GUI desktop on Linux and other UNIX systems). The notable part of
this release will be extensions to the X protocol that will allow more
flexibility in the compositing of windows. This allows for drop
shadows on windows, translucent windows, and other visual effects
(The screenshot at right is a bit small, but it shows a video playing
at 50% transparency with a browser behind). Linux-Gamers.Net has the full scoop:
Another useful feature is the inclusion of the new XDamage
extension. Monitoring the regions affected by rendering has
wide-spread use, from VNC-like systems scraping the screen to screen
magnifying applications designed to aid users with limited visual
acuity. The DAMAGE extension is designed to make such applications
reasonably efficient in the face of server-client
latency.
This all seems a bit technical, I know, but it will mean a more
'Mac-like' visual experience for Linux desktops, and more efficient
rendering. The screenshots
look great. Windows users, don't worry. I'm sure Longhorn will be
along eventually. Right? =)

History of candy bar wrappers
03/14/2005 05:29 PMCory Doctorow:
This Syracuse University thesis on the history of candy bar wrappers
is a very breezy work for an academic paper -- insightful and
interesting history of the evolution of an object whose ubiquity has
rendered it invisible to our modern eyes. Interesting to think that
there was a time when the idea of a candy bar wrapper was novel.
Candy wrappers are designed to communicate with consumers, - even
though the communication may often be one-way. The bright colors,
shiny paper and animated logos speak to our culture in the most
friendly and trusting tones. We know that each wrapper holds the
promise of something good - at least as good as Grandma used to
make.
