Matrix online game hires real actors to
play in-game characters
03/25/2005 06:33 AMCory Doctorow:
The Matrix Online (a massively multiplayer online game based on the
Matrix franchise) has hired a troupe of 20 actors to hang around in
game and in character, advancing the story and generally making it all
seem more disbelief-suspendingly real.
Since the close of the beta, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
announced that it has employed a troupe of 20-odd people whose job it
will be to enact narrative scenarios in The Matrix Online live. These
people will assume the roles of popular characters, interact with
players, and generally move the stories in ways that only live
"actors" can. And though it appears that the story hasn't officially
commenced, a few players on the Method server were treated to a pretty
slick sample of it this afternoon: an extended pep-talk by none other
than Morpheus himself. (See the screenshots for proof.) But this is an
Out of the Box report, so here are our first impressions of the game
so far.

from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) earlier
this month to develop their PC/PS2/Xbox game, Space Station:SIM, due
for consumer release this Christmas season. The Space Act Agreement is
a continuation of one received by GRS Games before Vision Videogames
management bought out the company in March 2004. It allows Vision
Videogames a flow of information from, and access to, NASA personnel
so the company can gather information to build their game. “The game
has captured everyone’s imagination. We have individuals and
international agencies including JAXA (The Japanese Space Agency)
volunteering to help us with drawings, science, music – anything you
can imagine,” says company president Bill Mueller. In Space
Station:SIM, the player assumes the roll of the Chief Administrator of
NASA, creating astronaut crewmembers with unique needs, abilities and
personalities while managing their activities and personal
relationships like “The SIMS®”. [PRWEB May 31, 2004]

Forget Be In The Game, How About Let The

Forget Be In The Game, How About Let The
Game Be In You?
04/07/2005 03:22 PMIt appears that Sony has now
patented the concept of beaming sensory info
directly into your brain without requiring any kind of invasive
surgery or anything (phew!). They claim it could be used in video
games either to add in sensory info like smell and taste, but also to
provide richer gaming experiences for deaf and blind people. While
there is something both fascinating and creepy about this idea, it
seems like the sort of thing that would have plenty of uses
outside of the video game world -- and those might be a bit
more impressive than just letting people really jack into a game.
Anyway, since patents don't actually have to be based on something
that actually works, this idea is... well... mostly just in someone's
brain.

03/26/2005 01:46 AMDevelopment costs are going up when it comes to games, which leads
some to wonder if it's time to begin writing the epitaph for PC
gaming.
For years, people have been saying that PC gaming is a
doomed business, but for years, developers have continued to produce
and publish any number of PC games in all genres. My opinion is that
game development costs have become so high that “profitability” in
PC gaming has become the real issue – not the retail turn
around.
That could be one reason that it seems that there are a dozen
"tycoon" titles for every new "top flight" PC game that comes out.
What do you think?

Napster: From Trading Music To Trading
on the Stock Exchange
Napster: From Trading Music To Trading
on the Stock Exchange
09/19/2004 09:28 AMLike a phoenix from the ashes, Napster has come back not once, but
twice it seems. Since Roxio bought the Napster name and logo a couple
years ago at a bankruptcy auction, Napster received a new "lease
on life". This time around Napster isn't just a service, it's to
become a public company and will be traded on the stock exchange.
Roxio has recently sold off it's CD-burning software business in a
move to concentrate solely on selling music online. Using Napster as
it's company name, it will allow Roxio to compete with other online
music delivery services from the likes of Microsoft, Yahoo!, and
Apple.
Roxio's sale of its software business landed them a cool $80 million
in cash and stocks which will give Napster a cash base of more than
$100 million once the deal closes, expected by year's end.
"One of the most important questions for our investors is, 'Does
Napster have the staying power to stay and thrive?' Having the cash
answers that question," said Chris Gorog, chief executive and
chairman of Roxio.
It will be more than enough to cover Napster until it becomes
profitable, Gorog said, "and we're on a clear path to do
that."

trading subsidies
trading subsidies
01/07/2004 02:44 PMI've got a column in the January Wired (not yet online) attacking farm
subsidies. Actually, more precisely, attacking farm subsidies when,
simultaneously, in the name of "free trade" we demand developing
nations protect our IP. (You must protect the market for our Mickey,
while we destroy the market for your wheat.) This has excited a flurry
of farmers to write angry letters about national security (yep,
bin-Laden is terrified by cheap wheat). Indeed, one "film maker -
farmer" wrote to say it was more important to protect farmers than IP.
Anyway, when the article appears online, it won't include an error
that is in the printed edition. I was drafting between attacking the
policies of industrialized nations in general, and America in
particular, and the statistics got mixed in the end. It is the
industrialized nations together that spend $300 billion a year on farm
subsidies --
six times the aid to developing nations. Obviously, the US
doesn't spend that much alone.
I apologize for that stupid error, which is totally my fault. But I
won't apologize for attacking farm subsidies.

Currently Reading: Trading Up
01/05/2004 03:00 PMTrading Up: "Middle-market
consumers, in the United States and around the world, are trading up
to New Luxury products and services that deliver higher levels of
quality, taste, and aspiration than conventional ones. Because New
Luxury goods sell at premiums of 20-200% over standard midprice goods,
they deliver higher profits. They also sell in much higher volumes
than superpremium products."
It's a rather interesting look at what's driven the success of
companies like Starbucks, Victoria's Secret, and others that make huge
profits selling premium-priced products on a mainstream scale. This
goes against the traditional assumption that goods sell at either a
low volume or a low price. Turns out, people will "trade down" in
some categories that don't matter to them in order to trade up in
areas that do.
It pretty much only talks about real-world goods, not software or
web-related stuff, nor even high-tech stuff, and I don't yet know how
exactly the lessons apply to the areas I usually think about. But they
probably do. (Is Apple a trading-up brand? Or is it not mainstream
enough? Maybe") I'm only about a third of the way through it, but good
stuff so far.

Trading Talents Instead Of Cash
07/26/2004 03:32 AMIf you ever study alternative economies, "barter economies" or local
currencies designed to stimulate the local economy, it's likely that
you've come across
Ithaca Hours
at some point or another. Designed as a way to help build up the
local economy in the small city of Ithaca, NY, it was basically a
barter system that let local merchants easily manage trade with each
other, without involving government sanctioned currency. The system
got plenty of hype and has been copied around the world (often with
help from those who created Ithaca Hours). It appears that the
concept has clearly made its way to South Africa, with an internet
twist. According to this article (which doesn't mention Ithaca Hours
at all), South Africans are using
an
online bartering system involving "talents" which are priced per
hour, and function quite like Ithaca Hours. The article even quotes
someone who claims to have "retired from the conventional money
system," and who won't go anyplace that doesn't accept "talents" as
payment.
