Personal Project and Task Manager
Software

Personal Project and Task Manager
Software
05/06/2004 02:52 AM
I have always used some kind of database application to track tasks and to-dos (and sometimes billing when I've been consulting), from the first custom application I wrote in the 1980's in Paradox for DOS, to a Filemaker database in the early 1990's, to an Excel spreadsheet in the late 1990's. What application I use seems to have more to do with what platform I'm spending most of my time in than the inherent qualities of the application itself. Mostly, I want the application to stay out of the way and be as easy to use as a text file. These days, I'm spending a lot of time around web servers and have them running on all 4 of my computers, as well as at various data centers, and I am running a fair number of web applications locally on my laptops and desktops, like a Wiki, a family weblog and an RSS aggregator (Feed on Feeds). I still don't have the data synchronizing seamlessly between the different computers, but I'm getting closer. It seemed natural to try a web application to keep track of my task list for some projects I am working on, so I recently started using Alex King's brilliant little Tasks personal to-do application. I've fallen in love with it. As someone who has been part of designing several web applications, I know that doing good web application user interfaces is very hard. Tasks has one of the best web application user interfaces I have ever seen. King makes smart use of Javascript to enhance the functionality of the forms, and he uses small graphics to create a clean, uncluttered and highly functional look. It is very easy to enter, modify, re-arrange and view tasks. And, unlike lots of web applications, it seems to work well with a multiplicity of browsers. It is a well thought out, fast, lightweight server-based application. The only thing I don't like about it is that King picks font sizes that are too small for middle aged eyes -- luckily those are easy to change in the stylesheet. If you want to have access to your to-do list from anywhere, or if you are already running web apps locally, and if you are comfortable installing a PHP application on your webserver, I highly recommend Tasks, both the older donation requested version and the updated $30 one. King just seriously upgraded Tasks...

Did TSA lie about personal information

04/01/2005 03:24 PM

The linked article if true is not a good sign in the personal privacy department. I had written TSA last year when they were thinking about building a list that would allow pre-screened passengers to have expedited passage through airport security.

The point I made to them is you have military people protecting this country and the majority of them know stuff that are not allowed to talk about. So if Uncle Sam trust them to keep their mouths shut then they should be able to trust them to get on a airplane.

I actually received a personal letter in the mail back saying thank you for the idea as it was a good one. Well guess what they still are trying to figure out security procedures. But their ill handling of personal information really has made me wonder if they know what their doing or not. [www.schneier.com]

A Personal Information and Knowledge

Andrew Woolridge sent me this...... I bet Seq Paquet will like it.

The Next Big Thing is being grown organically, cultivated by software developers and pruned by personal Weblog publishers. The rising Weblogging space of the Internet is looking more like traditional hypertext than the Web of the 1990s. The ways in which Weblogging has evolved beyond the previous limitations of the Web as hypertext, and the ways Weblogging is evolving towards common-use hypertext destined to play a critical role in everyday life, will be explored. We have a vision of a universal information management system built on extending the traditional hypertext framework. In our utopian future, everyone will use tools descended from today's blogs to structure, search and share personal information, as well as to participate in shared discussion. We begin by expressing a vision of common-use hypertext for information management and interpersonal communication. This vision is grounded in the rapid evolution of Weblogs and known issues in information systems and hypertext. The practical implications of who will use these systems, and how, is expanded as usage scenarios for Weblogs now and in the future. After recapping the current issues facing the Weblogging community, we look to the long-range implementation issues with optimism. Our system is forward-looking yet realistic. The activities the system will support are extrapolated from recent developments in the online community, and most of the sketches of implementation are based on current approaches. It is of more than passing interest that the features we extrapolate were all described by Nelson as early hypertext ideals. Of particular interest is that the features are now being implemented because of perceived immediate need by communities of interest.

Now It's Personal

Now It's Personal 04/11/2005 05:52 PM
If you had any doubt, "homeland security" is not being used as an excuse to silence dissent in today's America, I submit to you the case of Willie Fontenot. A personal hero of mine and others, Willie has worked for decades, gently and with integrity, from inside Louisiana's state corporate government for the cause of environmental justice. But no more, he has been forced to resign from the state Attorney General's office for refusing to capitulate to corporate goons (literally!) harassing a group of students taking pictures of an oil refinery. A Personal Thank You

A Personal Thank You 03/31/2005 03:29 PM

Well the last two months have been fun. Todd, the Head Geek asked me to handle the daily news while he finished his super secret project. His project is about done and I have other commitments, so today will be the last day of me handling the daily news. I will still be doing some Apple articles, so you’re not totally rid of me. :-)

So I wanted to say thank you for putting up with my presentation of the news, I appreciated your patience. I also wanted to publicly thank Todd for allowing me to post on his website. You can visit me at my Mac Switcher Website, www.surf-bits.com
Take care, Tim
