Here’s something that changed in Panther that drives me nuts several times a day:

1. I often hit cmd-option-h to hide everything but the app I’m working in.

2. Then later I want to hide the app I’m working in and get back to the Finder, so I hit cmd-H.

3. I expect the current app to hide and the Finder to become active.

4. But nothing happens. (On Jaguar the current app hides and the Finder becomes active, as I expect.)

I tossed the mobile phone photos along the right sidebar of this site and instead am feeding the most recent post to my ten years project, with an excerpt (all my photo taking energy is being used up there, so nothing extra left over for random mophos). I also added a feed from the Creative Commons blog.

As always, this site is an experiment in personal publishing and I may be adding more stuff and taking other stuff away soon, we'll see.

Apple has finally released updated Powerbooks—and they aren't G5s. Top-end processor speeds max out at 1.67GHz and include 8x SuperDrives DVD burners. The good news is that all models now come with 512MB of memory standard, although only on SuperDrive models—hopefully that's going to be typical across the Apple line.

In addition to supporting new, faster Bluetooth 2.0, the new Powerbooks add a 'scrolling TrackPad,' which lets you use two fingers instead of one to scroll though web pages (it sounds a lot like SideTra ck). Faster hard drives, faster processors, and more ram as standard equipment make these all look like decent choices for someone considering an upgrade, although certainly nothing revolutionary (and they still are using the low-res screens).

Both QuickTime and iMo vie got minor updates today--making it a great day to run Software Update (iTunes was also upgraded to 4.5). The most interesting addition to QuickTime is the "Apple Lossless Encoder" which retains the full quality of an audio CD, but in half the space. AAC encoding was also tweaked.

iMovie gains increased stability, improved performance, and a few bug fixes.
