The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven

The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven
04/27/2004 05:27 PM
Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) are nothing new. Virgin, both in the UK and the US, has been quite successful creating their own mobile phone carrier, despite not having a network of their own, but simply handling the branding and management, while leaving all the technology issues to a network operator partner. So far, most MVNOs seem to be targeting the youth market (often with "pre-paid plans"), and considering just how lucrative that market seems these days, it's no surprise that plenty of others want into the market. However, operating the whole MVNO is probably a lot of work, so now we're getting to the point where you have virtual MVNOs (VMVNOs) who will do all the work for a company, and simply slap their brand on the final product. That seems to be what's happening with convenience store 7-Eleven, who has announced plans to sell pre-paid mobile phones and service under the "Speak Out" brand - though, all the work appears to be done by Ztar Mobile. Other retailers are quickly expected to follow. Wal-Mart is at the top of the list, with Costco and Home Depot also apparently considering their own mobile phone offerings. The idea is to target younger users, or those with bad credit histories, who can simply pick up a phone at the store, and use it until their minutes run out, at which point they can top it up again - back at the store, of course.

Are New Cars Too Expensive To Fix?

Are New Cars Too Expensive To Fix? 04/19/2004 01:30 AM
With all the expensive safety equipment, electronics, sensors and gadgets in new cars, it's getting to the point where it's increasingly less reasonable to fix them if they've been in an accident. The article includes an example story of a relatively new BMW that was flipped: despite a lack of serious structural damage, the car was considered totaled by the insurance company, in large part due to the cost of replacing all six airbags (including the sensors and pyrotechnics) that went off in the accident. Even fancier lighting is causing problems. Xenon headlights have become quite popular among thieves - but can cost thousands of dollars to replace, especially when additional body damage is done by the thief. Some are even saying that we're creating "disposable" cars that are simply too expensive to repair when things go wrong.

Democracy Is Just Too Expensive

Democracy Is Just Too Expensive 05/04/2004 12:21 PM
It turns out, by the way, with all this talk about electronic voting and how flimsy it is, that the federal commission tasked with making sure that when you vote, it counts, is saying that it's way too expensive for them to actually make sure electronic voting works. Not only is the commission lacking money, but it's lacking in any kind of authority to tell election officials what to do. Those election officials have set up their own volunteer group to discuss issues with electronic voting, but even that's not binding in any way. In other words, right now, election officials can pretty much do what they want when it comes to electronic voting. Democracy, it appears, is just too expensive and too complicated to do right.

Is Microsoft Less Expensive Than Linux? 12/04/2003 06:03 PM
UNTIL RECENTLY, if you wanted to find someone who thought that a Windows-based program was cheaper than one based on Linux, you had to go all the way to Redmond. No more. Not since Microsoft paid Forrester Research's Giga Research to conduct a comparative study of the costs of developing a Web-based portal. The study compared the costs incurred by five large and midsize companies that used the Java 2 Enterprise Edition with costs incurred by seven large and midsize companies that used .Net applications. For large corporations in the study, the cost of using Microsoft products for development and deployment plus three years of maintenance was 28 percent less than the cost for J2EE/Linux.

AP - Delta Air Lines' plan to cut its most expensive fares and ax a Saturday-night stay-over rule for cheaper tickets could be a boon to business travelers. Want To Buy The Most Expensive Movie
Ticket Of Your Life?
11/18/2003 12:51 PM
Right at the top of the dot com bubble, there were a new clump of startups that were focused on the idea of letting your "everyday investor" invest in early stage startups. Since everyone had become knowledgeable about how angels and VCs were investing in private companies and becoming insanely wealthy when they went public, a bunch of VCs thought they would capitalize on the average investor's desire to be part of the "next big dot com". Of course, plans like that make sense when every startup does well, but they fall apart quickly when the bubble pops. There's a reason why private companies take money from certain individuals and firms and there's a reason why it's called "risk" capital. These investments can (and often do) disappear in an instant. So, I find it a bit amusing that Hollywood has suddenly latched onto a similar plan, and are trying to sell shares in a new "independent" movie, starring Ethan Hawke, to the public. A minimum buy will cost you nearly $1,000 and you are extremely unlikely to see a penny of that in return. The folks selling these shares aren't looking for investors, they're looking for suckers who want to think they're a part of the movie business. About the most anyone who buys into this is likely to see in return is a movie - and, you can probably just wait a bit and spend a few bucks at the theater (or even less at the local video store) for that.

The Return Of Useless Expensive
Conferences

The Return Of Useless Expensive
Conferences
05/14/2004 01:32 PM
About a year ago, I got annoyed at some of the pointless "big thinker" conferences that were showing up and wrote up a random essay about the conference I wanted to attend, which was basically playing off the idea that the only useful time at a conference was at lunch, when you actually got to talk to others. I also wanted to force people at the conference into seeing things from the side of people who opposed them, just to make the conversation a little more interesting. Unfortunately, it appears that, with the economy starting to comeback, conference organizers are pushing more of these useless "big thinker" conferences. Charles Cooper over at CNET is making a similar point to the one I made after getting invited to yet another of these pointless conferences that wants to charge a few thousand dollars (he doesn't say, but the conference in question is Web 2.0). Basically, they're putting the same people on stage and expecting everyone to pay thousands of dollars (though, to make this one even worse: it's "invite only" - but you can request an invitation to pay $2,000, which seems particularly obnoxious) to listen to people say what you already know they're going to say. As Cooper points out: "It is not long before at least half the attendees slip into the corridor, where the conversation is infinitely more interesting. Plus, there's coffee." All that for between $1,695 to $2,790. No thanks.
