AP - Undaunted by the rain, hundreds of children scampered around the South Lawn of the White House Monday, hugging stuffed bunnies and rolling colored eggs across the soggy grass in an annual ritual that dates to the late 1870s when Rutherford B. Hayes was president.

THE SALON
BLOG SILLY EASTER EGG HUNT

THE SALON
BLOG SILLY EASTER EGG HUNT
04/09/2004 03:59 PM
eggHere's a silly publicity stunt I dreamed up to motivate people to check out more of the wonderful Salon Blogs. Last night I 'hid' 10 eggs, like the one at left, one in each of 10 selected Salon Bloggers' comments threads. They are numbered 1 to 10 inclusively. The posts in which they are 'hidden' are no more than one week old (April 2 or more recent). Your challenge is to be the first to find them. When you do, come back here and 'claim' the easter egg by posting, in the comments thread below, which Salon Blog you found it in, and its number.

Then, when you've claimed it, it's your job to hide another egg, in another Salon Blog comment thread (remember -- no going back further than April 2 or it gets too hard). Here's how you do it:
  1. Select a Salon Blog from this list or this list, or any other Salon Blog you know of that has been updated since April 2.
  2. Go to that blog and check to ensure that there aren't already eggs hidden in the last week's posts' comments on that blog. Then select one of the comments threads from the last week and type in (or cut and paste) as your comment this line of code:
Happy Easter!  <img src="http://blogs.salon.com/0002007/images/egg.gif"> xx

where xx is the number ten greater than the egg you found, e.g. if you found egg 7 then the egg you hide would be 17.

Theoretically, we could end up with an egg in the comments of every active Salon Blog. Remember, to claim the egg you have to be the first one to do so in the comments thread below -- if you e-mailed me about it or commented on it elsewhere it doesn't count.

This is just for fun -- no prizes, except the discovery of some great, and underappreciated, blogs. The hunt ends Easter Sunday. Happy Easter, everyone.

Save The Children calls on release of
Iraqi children from jails.
07/08/2004 10:09 PM
Save The Children calls on release of Iraqi children from jails. This apparently in response to recent media reports on the abuse of children in Iraqi prisons. And it's not just Save the Children who is concerned, but UNICEF, Amnesty International, and the Red Cross. Infact, Congress has called for a special briefing tomorrow from the Pentagon on "confidential reports" from the Red Cross on prison conditions in Iraq. The Pentagon is closing the briefing to the public, however, and apparently thinks that even Congress shouldn't know the details of how we treat prisoners.
"It's something of a stretch of policy and procedures to give them to the Congress," Rumsfeld spokesman Larry Di Rita said.

These sculptures are political art at its most powerful - relics of a violent past transformed into expressions of hope for a more peaceful future.

This giant Ukrainian Easter Egg (pysanka) was built in 1975 in Vegreville, Canada by (then) Univ. Utah Computer Science Professor Ronald Resch. Interesting egg factoids can be found here--including that it swivels like a weather vane. Vegreville has an annual festival. More images of egg here. The Vegreville Pysanka was the first physical structure completely designed with computer-aided geometric modeling software. There is a good description here of the complex geometry involved. It's based on a technique (PDF) he developed and patented for folding a flat material (i.e. sheet metal) into flexible surfaces. Ronald Resch has had an interesting career.

Following up on our previous post about the Pentagon's new Active Denial System (energy beam) and other "non-let hal" weapons, here's a New Scientist feature about the state-of-the-art in ray guns:
"...the $9000 Close Quarters Shock Rifle projects an ionised gas, or plasma, towards the target, producing a conducting channel. It will also interfere with electronic ignition systems and stop vehicles.

'We will be able to fire a stream of electricity like water out of a hose at one or many targets in a single sweep,' claims XADS (Xtreme Alternative Defense Systems) president Peter Bitar."
Amnesty International and other human rights groups are none too thrilled. Link

Guns and jets

Guns and jets 03/08/2004 11:03 PM

My friend Brad, a jet pilot with heroic flying skills, graciously agreed to help me with the Commercial maneuvers and precision landings today.  We hauled N505WT out of its hangar and headed out to Worcester with the GPS turned off and the gyro-stabilized compass covered up.  Flying along at 2500' it was actually a bit tough to pick out landmarks from the VFR chart.  After 10 landings we decided it was time for some of the free cookies that they bake at the Worcester FBO (airplane gas station) so we taxied into the ramp.  The scene was one of utter desolation.  The main terminal building looked empty.  The last scheduled airline flights from Worcester ceased about one year ago.  The general aviation area contained a small collection of cheap piston-powered airplanes (like mine!).  At Bedford, N505WT's home airport, there is always at least $300 million of private jets on the ramp, waiting to take hard-working public corporation executives from golf game to weekend house.  The woman behind the desk confirmed that not a single jet had landed at Worcester all day.

As we were starting up N505WT a good-sized business jet was taxiing in.  A van drove up to meet the passengers at the side of the $10 million twin-turbojet-powered plane.  "What luxury!" we thought.  "This is the only way to travel.  They're probably just back from a resort in Mexico."  A couple of guys got out of the van and walked around the plane wearing guns.  Security for someone important!  The one passenger got out, a teenager wearing a rather plain jumpsuit.  Then we noticed that his legs were chained together...

Yet another thing that America's richest and poorest citizens share:  traveling by private jet.

Oh yes, speaking of guns.  A friend from the MIT Media Lab sent around a home video yesterday.  It seems that he has put the filmmaking skills that he learned there to good use and has made effective use of the Internet in distributing his creation.  Click right on the following link and then "Save Target As" before playing from your own hard disk in a separate player window (100 or 200% size is best): boyhood dream.

Twenty years ago people talked about Arpanet/Internet leading to an explosion in video creativity and distribution but it just wasn't practical with the available bandwidth and percentage of consumers hooked up.  Today all the pieces are in place.

Lift and Reach and Hold That Pose, and Advance to the Next Level

"Ever greater weight loss - rather than a chance to battle bigger monsters - is one goal for players of Yourself!Fitness, a video game under development for Microsoft's Xbox. The new title, aimed at women, features a computer-generated personal trainer who guides users through a customized set of exercises and diets.

Players must reach certain goals to advance to the next level. The program creates a fitness plan for each person based on height, weight and other characteristics. The game's virtual coach, Maya, then guides users through a subset of 600 possible exercises, congratulating and encouraging them when they achieve their goals.

The creators of Yourself!Fitness at ResponDesign, a game developer based in Portland, Ore., think their new title is a natural successor to exercise videos and DVD's, which continue to sell more than 30 million units a year, the company's co-founder, Ted Spooner, said....

After the game's release this fall, the company expects to make a Sony Playstation version available at the end of the year, and to sell an Xbox Live version in 2005 that will let participants use a wireless headset to talk to each other during the game.

'Users will be able to create an online community to discuss each other's accomplishments and chat while working out,' Mr. Spooner said. 'This will be a virtual gym.'

Company executives expect the game, which cost millions to develop, to sell several hundred thousand units. Assuming that happens, ResponDesign is ready to create spinoff titles focusing on Pilates and Yoga." [New York Times: Technology]

I'm surprised it's taken this long to happen, although I suppose I'm most surprised that the company didn't start with the Playstation for its EyeToy accessory. Hey, you could be right there in the video with Richard Simmons or Jane Fonda!
