Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail
Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail
05/26/2004 01:35 PMLast month there was a lot of talk about the somewhat clueless move by
a California politician to create a law that would
ban
Google's Gmail offering, despite the fact that it was completely
optional to use. It appears that enough people (probably including
those at Google itself) sat down with State Senator Liz Figueroa to
explain how email works, and have convinced her to
tone down
the bill so that it now allows Gmail. That's right, the
anti-Gmail bill now has loopholes that specifically allow Gmail. In
other words, Senator Figueroa seems to have realized just how
pointless the bill was in the first place and is trying to save face
by adjusting it so that it still seems to have a purpose: banning a
bunch of things that no one was doing, like having humans read the
content of your emails to put in advertising.

03/17/2005 04:26 AMIt seems a lot of people are getting this message underneath the
Google search box: New! Get Gmail - Google's free email service with
1000 MB of space. The link is to a page that says: Since we launched
Gmail in April 2004, we've been focused on improving the service,
relying on our users to spread the word and invite others to try it
out. The response has been great, and now we're ready for some more
Gmail users. [...] As we make room for more Gmail users, we want to
first extend invitations to Google users. We're still working to make
Gmail better, so for now, we're just inviting a small number at
random. Looks like that's you! We're really excited to share Gmail
with you and we hope you like it....

Anyone for Gmail?
Anyone for Gmail?
06/14/2004 06:10 PMSo anyway, I signed up for Gmail
a while back and basically I don't really use it even though it's
pretty well assembled and has some nice features and now I've been
given three invitations but everyone who I know who wants an account
already has one. I imagine the big craze for offering people enormous
gifts and proposing amorous liasons in exchange for One Gigabyte of
Full-On E-mail Pleasure has passed, but if you can think of a reason
why I should invite you rather than just making three new accounts
with funny names, then post a comment below or chuck me an e-mail to
my fairly guessable normal e-mail address (hint: it starts
tom@) and I'll see what I can do...

Getting your gmail on
Getting your gmail on
06/17/2004 07:39 PMIs there any way to specify your default email app as a website in
a Windows XP system? Currently, my office workstation has an ancient
copy of Eudora I haven't used in years, but whenever I need to email
someone from my PC (I do all my email on a powerbook), I have to
copy/paste addresses by hand and use my mac or use Gmail.
It seems like there should be a way to tell firefox my default
email app isn't an app, but is instead gmail.google.com. Anyone that
knows of a way can have an invite to gmail. Or anyone that just wants
an invite can also email me and we can have this problem together.
Just ping me and I'll invite you
in.
EFF on Gmail
EFF on Gmail
04/10/2004 03:46 AMOn EFF's Deep Links blog, some preliminary analysis of Google's Gmail
terms-of-service:
"People are entitled to know what kind of information Google will pull
from email, whether or not it logs this information, and for how
long," said EFF's Kevin Bankston. "Can your Gmail address or any other
personal identifier be linked to those logs, or to your Google search
history?"
"Gmail's privacy policy states that 'Google welcomes feedback on this
document and policy as the Gmail service is currently in an early
testing stage.' While that's a nice sentiment, we can't give
meaningful feedback until we have all the facts."
The remedy to the situation is obvious: Google needs to let us all
know precisely what the privacy/convenience trade-off is for using
Gmail, and soon.

04/01/2005 02:29 PMLongtime Apple notebook carrying case maker,

bag incorporates the CORE protection system, which adjusts its grip to
accommodate different size notebooks. The Brenthaven Pro 12/15-inch
Shoulder Case has a twin compartment with a combination accordion file
folder and multimedia pockets designed for notebook accessories,
cables and files. There's also an all-new organizer panel with a

First thoughts about Panther: Address
Book...
First thoughts about Panther: Address
Book...
10/29/2003 12:10 AMAddress Book under OSX has never been a particularly impressive
application, but it's just about worked as a system wide piece of kit.
Panther brings with it a number of changes and improvements and a
couple of nasty unprovements too. There's some functionality here that
I can't categorically say wasn't in Jaguar, so bear with me if
I foul something up:
- Every card in Address Book can have a picture associated with it.
This is not new. However previously you were just able to pick up a
picture and drop it whole onto the hole allocated for it, where it
would sit greatly diminished in size and essentially unusable.
The version in Panther introduces the lovely resize and crop
functionality that's been in iChat AV since the beta. Very
nice indeed;
- The edit functionality now lasts when you change cards
which is a good change. Previously editing an card meant entering it
individually and clicking on the edit button. Now the edit button will
remain depressed until you release it. It's not the UI approach I'd
have taken, but it pretty much works;
- The edit interface itself is a bit of a dog's dinner. The
previously understated and probably not very clear grey + and
- buttons have now become garishly red and green, the edit
screen radically indents everything and moves stuff around to the
extent that it's difficult to see what's going on and where your
information has been moved to. An approach that highlighted the
information rather than the labels might have been better;
- Also noticed for the first time is the 'send updates'
functionality - which I'm sure has been there for ages. It appears to
be a way of informing everyone in your address book of any and all
changes to your personal address card. I'm interested, but too scared,
to see how this might work...
