Software Improvement

Software Improvement 05/21/2004 01:01 AM
Scott Rosenberg: Microsoft has now reached that rarefied state of software existence in which it can offer "improvements" in the form of new features that make it easier to turn off those annoying "improvements" of yesteryear that were hitherto too difficult to discard!
If this feature is the same feature that i've used in Office 2000 (I think) for Windows, then, no, I don't agree with Scott.
For example, I may want the automatic numbering of lists, but on occasions I may want the automation to be turned off in specific locations of my document. This "Smart Button" feature comes in handy.
I see this as an improvement of UI, I guess that's what I'm saying.

Bi-Partisan Environmental Improvement?

Bi-Partisan Environmental Improvement? 04/24/2004 01:55 AM
A new study (in a biggish PDF) from PRI states that most environmental indicators in the United States have improved dramatically since the 1970's regardless of the political party that controls the White House. Notably: "CO (Carbon monoxide) levels were the lowest recorded during the past 20 years" (EPA, 2002, pg 48), ambient lead levels have fallen 98% between 1976 and 2002 (pg 46), and sulfur dioxide has fallen 70% since 1976 (pg 44). (Mostly) Happy Earth Week, right?

Molecules of memory improvement

Molecules of memory improvement 08/12/2004 01:09 PM
An MIT neuroscientist's latest research on how our brains build and eliminate synapses could someday enable us to tweak the the process and overclock our minds. Professor Morgan Sheng and postdoc Sang Hyoung Lee identified the "traffic cop" molecule that controls the number of receptors on the surface of neurons.
"Because more receptors mean stronger connections between brain cells, manipulating this process may one day provide a means of boosting brainpower in the hippocampus, where long-term memories are stored."

Lost to history? or improvement?

Lost to history? or improvement? 10/29/2003 02:46 PM
Welcome to Rawson, N.D., Population. 6. Are towns like these worth saving? Should these "areas" be allowed to go back to their natural equilibrium between man and nature? Is there a "natural" equilibrium? What does this mean for the future of small towns v. urban sprawl? Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times and Drs. Frank and Deborah Popper of Rutgers have an idea.

It seems that the browser we have come to know as Chimera (or is that Navigator?) is about to change name to Camino. The name is going through legal checks, and Camino will debut sometime soon as Chimera 0.7. No idea what it means, but I quite like it (bearing in mind the other option was iVoyage). { via Mike Pinkerton }

"Home Improvement," Baghdad-style

"Home Improvement," Baghdad-style 07/27/2004 11:04 AM
This CS Monitor story explores one of many new "reality" TV shows which have launched on Iraqi television stations in recent months. One of these programs is a home makeover show in which producers bring donated materials to bombed-out houses and try to fix 'em up.
"This is a big surprise," says Ahmed Hassan Kadhim, standing in the doorway with a gap-toothed grin. "What can I say?"

"We've brought you a whole set of furniture!" says Ms. Zubair. "We're trying to compensate you for what you lost!"

"Labor and Materials" is Iraq's answer to "Extreme Home Makeover" and the country's first reality TV show. In 15-minute episodes, broken windows are made whole again. Blasted walls slowly rise again. Fancy furniture and luxurious carpets appear without warning in the living rooms of poor families. Over six weeks, houses blasted by US bombs regenerate in a home-improvement show for a war-torn country.

Mike Pinkerton writes in his blog:

When I said we're not soliciting suggestions for new names, I really meant it. Right now Camino has passed the preliminary legal check and they are doing a more in-depth one. Expect resolution sometime next week and the 0.7 release very shortly after.
