On Wednesday, Linspire Inc. announced the official completion of its global name change from Lindows to Linspire. Linspire will no longer use the term Lindows in any of its current marketing materials, Web site or retail packaging. Kyoto is Dead - Long Live Pragmatism

Kyoto is Dead - Long Live Pragmatism 09/19/2004 09:43 AM
There's troubling news (FT subscription reqd, alternate copy here) coming from Japan, where the Kyoto protocol on Greenhouse Emissions was born in 1997. It seems that the Japanese aren't going to be able to meet their emissions targets specified in the agreement in time. Indeed, unless they buy a "large quantity" of emissions credits from other countries, they're not going to be able to meet their commitment at all. Taishi Sugiyama, a climate expert at the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry in Japan, said emissions were rising 1 per cent a year due to a larger-than-expected impact from vehicles and households. That made it impossible to cut real domestic emissions by the required 16 per cent within a few years, he said. Is this the last nail in the coffin for the Kyoto protocol? And if so, which way do we go when it's buried? Was GWB right to pull out, and where would John Kerry take us, in either case?

Microsoft's decision to return $32 billion to its shareholders may be a wise business move, but it is also an admission of defeat. With its announcement this week that it will pay a special one-time dividend of $3 a share, the company is confessing that despite years of trying, it has not found an attractive way to invest its cash reserves. After decades of spectacular growth, the world's most famous software company seems resigned to a more sedate middle age.

Long Distance Teleportation Could Lead
To Quantum Computing

Long Distance Teleportation Could Lead
To Quantum Computing
08/22/2004 03:16 PM
Physicists have carried out successful teleportation with particles of light over a distance of 600m across the River Danube in Austria.

When physicists say "teleportation", they are describing the transfer of key properties from one particle to another without a physical link. Quantum teleportation relies on an aspect of physics known as "entanglement"; whereby the properties of two particles can be tied together even when they are far apart. Einstein called it "spooky action at a distance".

Long distance teleportation is crucial if dreams of superfast quantum computing are to be realised.

"The really interesting question for us was whether we could do this outside a lab setting, in the environment used for today's fibre-optic communications," co-author Rupert Ursin of the University of Vienna told BBC News Online. "This is very important if you are talking about investing money in quantum communication."

Quantum teleportation could be harnessed for fast, powerful computers or communication networks.

Emotional Labour

Emotional Labour 06/13/2004 03:25 PM
Emotional Labour It's been ages since an article so perfectly distills how work makes me feel and what it's probably doing to me. Claire works in a call centre for Orange mobile phones and on her "computer screen, a series of little squares indicates calls waiting, and tells her how long she has been on her current call. If a call has been difficult, there are only eight seconds in which to take a deep breath and compose her voice into the expected tone of friendliness. ... What is striking is how on the one hand Claire is dealing with very rigid systems set down by company procedure and the vagaries of the computer system, while on the other she is expected to convey a sense of naturalness and her own personality. "

Don Norman's Emotional Design

Don Norman's Emotional Design 02/10/2004 10:32 AM

It looks like Don Norman, Mr. Design of Everyday Things, has another major hit book in his hand: Emotional Design.  I ordered my copy after reading first few paragraphs of the first chapter titled Attractive Things Work Better (245K PDF).

The core idea is this: if it looks good, you can use it more effectively with less confusion than if it didn't look good.  When you think about it, it's obvious.  Even if you are a talented musician, your performance will suffer if you hated playing music.  Of course, it can't be stretched too far.I remember reading somewhere that, when a woman is too beautiful, one can have, er, physical difficulties.

bluetake_hayabusa.jpg imageSo Hardware Pacers has the first review I've seen of the Bluetake BT420 EX Bluetooth Hi-Fi Sports Headphones, but it sort of reads more like the eighth-grade epic poem I once wrote to express my true feelings for Mandi Hefner, peppered with lots of 'the most incredibles' and 'exhilaratings' and 'perfections,' although thankfully the review doesn't feature me as a modern-day urban ninja, out to protect her honor by defeating the Suitors of the Seven Stairs. It does have, among other things, a surprisingly-high suggested retail price -- about $250 -- which pretty much means all those superlatives better be spot on, especially when they note that the sound quality diminishes in the presence of other Bluetooth devices.

Also, Hardware Pacers, your Forbidden Right Click Technique is no match for my Celestial Print Screen Science! (Thanks, JP!)

bt400gii_headset.jpg imageConsidering the Bluetake BT400 GII Bluetooth headset? Even though it looks like a cast-off Romulan scout ship? That you have to put on your head? You probably better read this review at WhiningDog first. No offense to WhiningDog, but these Bluetooth headset reviews are only so much good without a comparison -- you can learn a lot about the features, but not so much about the relative sound quality. Still, they seem happy enough with it but when they complain about things about how it fits all you're really learning about, as a rule, is the shape of the reviewer's ears. When is someone going to start making a Bluetooth headset with a molded ear piece?
