Grid Computing: The Next Push
Grid Computing: The Next Push
01/07/2004 02:55 PM
Grid Computing is, according to the Grid Information Centre, a way to
"...enable the sharing, selection, and aggregation of a wide variety
of geographically distributed computational resources." It is, in
other words, an attempt to make Sun's famous pronouncement "The
Network Is The Computer" an even more workable proposition. (It is
also an instantiation of several of the patterns of decentralization
that used to travel together under the name peer-to-peer.)
Despite the potential generality of the Grid, most of the public
pronouncements are focusing on the use of Grids for supercomputing.
IBM defines it more narrowly: Grid Computing is "... applying
resources from many computers in a network-at the same time-to a
single problem", and the MIT Technology Review equated Grid technology
with supercomputing on tap when it named Grids one of "Ten
Technologies That Will Change the World."
This view is wrong. Supercomputing on tap won't live up to to this
change-the-world billing, because computation isn't a terribly
important part of what people do with computers. This is a lesson we
learned with PCs, and it looks like we will be relearning it with
Grids. - More at http://www.shirky.com/writings/grids.html

Companies Who Can't Take A Joke, But Can
Push A Lie
02/12/2004 02:16 PMIt's no secret that, on the internet, if you don't like something and
try to get it taken down, you're only going to draw a lot more
attention to it. However, corporations still haven't gotten this
message. They seem to get especially annoyed at parodies, complaining
that people might be tricked by them. Here's an article that takes
these companies to task for
not being
able to take a joke, while at the same time having so-called
"independent" organizations that are paid by them set up advocacy
websites that are nothing more than a front for the company or group
in question. In other words, companies get upset about advocacy that
goes against them and try to force the sites down, worrying that
people will get "confused." At the same time, they're hiding the fact
that they're behind these other advocacy sites (which, some might say
is confusing readers, as well). As the writer of the article points
out, even if they're right, they're doing themselves harm by not being
upfront and honest about these sites: "The more successful the
strategy in the short term, the more it will eventually corrode trust
in the long. People persuaded by such sites will feel betrayed when it
becomes evident they were duped. And it won't even matter if the
pseudo sites have truth on their side: when a messenger is exposed as
an impostor, their credibility is destroyed." Another example of
short-term thinking from corporations that do them much more damage in
the long term.
Push technology gets a nudge
Push technology gets a nudge
01/07/2004 02:58 PMIt's a new year, the tech economy is growing again, and we're just
about due for a new digital fad -- or the resurrection of an old one.
Think back to a simpler, stupider time -- 1997, to be exact. The
Internet craze still hadn't peaked. Each new issue of Wired magazine
featured several zany new business ideas, and nutty investors proved
willing to give them a go. One of the favorites was called "push"
technology....

The Ups And Downs Of File Sharing
04/26/2004 11:53 AMThe latest Pew study says that
14% of American
internet users claim they've stopped downloading music, but that
the number of people downloading has been steadily growing again over
the last few months. The study has a few problems, however. First,
it's all based on asking people about their activities, and
considering the publicity campaign, it's easy to imagine a heavy file
sharer saying they don't download any music because they don't want to
risk opening themselves up to a lawsuit. Furthermore, the study does
not appear to distinguish between what kind of music is being
"downloaded." They seem to lump together downloading unauthorized
files, using paid download stores like iTunes, or even legitimate
downloads directly from a musician's own website.
The Ups And Downs Of Municipal Broadband
The Ups And Downs Of Municipal Broadband
04/14/2004 11:51 AMFollowing last month's Supreme Court ruling stating that
state
s could outlaw municipal broadband, ZDNet has an interesting
interview with
Jim Ballmer, one of the lawyers fighting to let municipalities offer
broadband, should they want to. Meanwhile, the very large UTOPIA
municipal broadband (offering fiber to the home) project in Utah was
dealt a huge setback last night when Salt Lake City
decided
not to support the project, after a fairly intense fight over the
issue. Qwest is rejoicing, as they've been complaining about UTOPIA
ever since it was first conceived. However, the folks behind UTOPIA
are clearing trying to push ahead, and hope that they'll be signing up
a few other cities to help out soon. The big questions now are
whether or not the other cities involved are willing to foot the
larger part of the bill and whether or not they'll be able to find
enough subscribers to make AT&T still be interested in being a service
provider on the network. Once again, we return to the
example
of Burlington, Vermont, where a municipal fiber connection with
ownership by its own users means much more opportunity for everyone
except companies who previously had the local monopoly on
providing (much slower) broadband access. A municipal solution that
allows companies to sign on as providers builds on the idea of a
natural monopoly while still allowing true competitive market
pressures to provide people with better services.
