Modern Drunkard

Modern Drunkard 01/02/2005 11:26 AM
Modern Drunkard claims to be mainly serious with the goal of returning "drinking to the glorious Rat Pack/Jackie Gleason Era." It celebrates the fun of drinking and rails against what it thinks of as Puritanical forces of repression (including MADD). The latest, and perhaps last, printed issue was published last August. [Thanks to my brother Andy, who is not any sort of drunkard, for the link.] And with this post, I am now the record holder for the shortest cognitive-emotional distance. Yes! But, heck, it's a blog. We're supposed to have short cognitive-emotional spans....

Modern supermen

Modern supermen 06/13/2004 06:23 PM
See, what the mode rn supermen of Parkour can do. Try the first video, it impressed the hell out of me at least.

In ancient Japan, ninjas were often described as supermen, able to fly, leap onto the roofs of tall buildings, climb anything... Some colour was of course added by their enemies (who wrote the history) to make them appear more fearsome - and of course, the ninjas did not mind: it made their life a lot easier. Seeing those videos makes me wonder the effect a trained ninja must've had on his enemies, trained to combat on level ground and horseback.

Terror.

Modern Ruins

Modern Ruins 05/12/2004 03:54 PM
Modern Ruins are a window into human histories, they tell the stories of the past through the stark presence of objects and architectures. Perhaps the most powerful aspect of ruins is the subject that is missing in the photographs; the people who once worked, lived, walked, talked, slept and dreamed in these spaces.

Waterphobia in the modern age

Waterphobia in the modern age 06/22/2005 02:23 AM

On Friday my friend Rich asked for a ride up to the Wiscasset airport (KIWI) on the central Maine coast.  He wanted to take his dad and I had already arranged to practice approaches with a CFI buddy so it was fortunate that the Cirrus had only "tab fuel" on board (26 gallons, good for 2.3 hours).  It was an uneventful instrument flight up towards Portland, mostly on top of a layer of clouds at 2500'.  Once on the ground at Wicked Good Aviation we petted the big Black Lab and his 6-month-old puppy friend then borrowed the "courtesy car", an old Cadillac that would have been called a gas-guzzler until the SUV came along and demonstrated that 18 mpg is not as low as a family car can go.  After chatting with the contractors who are fixing up a house on the peninsula, Rich said "let's take the boat over across the cove to a restaurant."  We ferried ourselves out to the boat's mooring via canoe and had an uneventful trip to and from the restaurant, which is next to an old Civil War-era fort at the mouth of the Kennebec River.  At the end of the boat ride we had to ferry ourselves back from the mooring about 20' to the beach via the canoe.  I got out on the beach and watched as Rich and my CFI buddy went back to pick up Rich's dad.  As soon as he stepped from the boat into the canoe the canoe flipped over, dumping everyone and everything into the salt water.

What do three average Americans carry when they are in a boat these days?  Cell phones, digital cameras, etc.  In the 1950s the total cost of this incident would have been a little time to let the clothing and wallet dry.  On Friday the total cost of the electronic items destroyed was closer to $5000.

Modern Medicine 06/21/2004 11:28 PM

Since my accident I have been to the x-ray room 7 times to catscan three times and one MRI. I am sure my insurance company will be happy with the bill these have been invaluable in evaluating the before and after results of my surgery and to track the healing progress.

Today while on a non-standard follow up to try and determine the source of a some isolated pain I have been having they pulled out a dozen images and did some quick comparison. They used a technique where the 2 images are loaded and then major differences are pointed out in affected areas. Being nothing was found they think I have a nerve causing the pain or isolated muscle spasms.

I left the clinic feeling relieved that nothing had shifted and not looking forward to taking the new prescription. For those of you that have ever taken flexirol (spelling is probably wrong) you will understand why I have not been posting much.

A tale of modern day slavery

A tale of modern day slavery 08/11/2004 08:22 AM
Slavery is not just the shameful stuff of history books - not in Florida. Last year, 7 journalists spent 9 months in a behind-the-scenes exploration of the state's immigrant workers. In more than 30 articles and photo essays, they revealed a system where workers are threatened, beaten, locked up, injured, forced into prostitution, and trapped in a spiral of debt and abuse. Powerful forces are arrayed against them in a state where agricultural laws are shaped by politician-farmers who have a vested interest in the status quo. - more -

Modern Chinese Secret

Modern Chinese Secret 07/23/2004 01:25 PM

Two researchers at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University have developed a process to coat cotton clothing and textiles with titanium dioxide so that, when exposed to sunlight or artificial UV, the "dirt, pollutants and micro-organisms" that have collected on the treated fabric will be broken down and presumably fly right off into the air, and only some of it will go up your nose.

One of the researchers, Dr. Xin, says the self-cleaning clothes are ideal for people who lack the time to wash their clothes, like "military people", or hikers, or people who have to take care of the meddlesome Dr. Benton Quest and that infuriating tow-headed boy of his before they ruin everything.

The renovated Museum of Modern Art

The renovated Museum of Modern Art 03/17/2005 03:24 AM

Four of us arrived at the Museum of Modern Art this morning at 10:15 am, placing us about 1000th in line.  The place was closed for a few years while $858 million was pumped in for renovation and expansion.  Before the renovation MoMA was white walls, bright lights, crushing crowds, one amazing painting out of every 20, $10 to get in.  After the near $1 billion project?  White walls, bright lights, crushing crowds, one amazing painting out of every 20... $20 to get in.  We made it into the museum by 11:15 but claustrophobia made us all anxious to leave by 12:15.  One native Manhattanite said that it was the most crowded place he had been inside during the preceding 12 months.

Personal favorite exhibit:  Bell 47 helicopter, as seen in the TV show MASH, hanging near some open stairs.  Strangest architectural detail:  glass half-walls throughout the museum topped with strips of stainless steel.  These are apparently too fragile for anyone to touch but because MoMA most resembles the line for Space Mountain at Disneyland it is hard for people to avoid putting their hands on these rails.  this necessitates the museum keeping dozens of security guards busy at all times walking around telling people not to touch the rails.

[Tip for tourists:  If you can plan at least one day ahead you can buy timed tickets on the MoMA Web site and avoid waiting on line in the cold.]

Internet Voting: The Modern Poll Tax?

Internet Voting: The Modern Poll Tax? 01/19/2004 01:44 AM
An interesting question is being raised as we get closer and closer to offering some kind of internet voting mechanism. Does internet voting unfairly benefit those on the "have" side of the digital divide? If so, how can you ever offer internet voting, when it's always going to be easier for some people than others? I think the argument may be going too far. Already, there are some people who have cars and some who don't. Those without are going to have more difficulty getting to a polling place, but people don't complain about that. Even in cases where everyone does have a car - some are nearer than others to a polling place. You can't necessarily guarantee completely equal simplicity in getting to a polling place. The issue shouldn't be one of making it equally difficult for everyone to vote - but making it as easy as possible for everyone to vote.

Video Games As The Modern Car
Commercials
02/16/2004 12:57 AM
Apparently, the car racing video game Gran Tourismo has been so popular helping automakers sell cars to young adults, that many car companies are starting to put out their own video games and are setting up places to play the games in dealerships. The article talks about kids who play Gran Tourismo and get so involved in modding and driving a specific car that they want that car in real life as well. However, now that the automakers are realizing this is a good way to sell cars, some are wondering if the fad is over, suggesting that as soon as the folks in suits figure something out, the kids know better than to stick around. Still, it's yet another example of companies realizing that you're better off creating promotional items that people want, and then getting them out there into the world.

Early Thoughts on Modern Rocketry

Early Thoughts on Modern Rocketry 01/06/2004 09:28 AM
With the successful landing of the NASA Mars probe, the use of rockets for research is back in the news in a good way. We all know that modern rocketry started with the German V1 and V2 systems, and that it has been largely driven by the military ever since. (Interestingly enough, it seems that the Germans got the idea from the Americans! Needless to say, the American concerned - Dr Robert Goddard - sued.) But what about scientific and civilian rocketry? That can be traced back about as far. There, the credit (and the blame) rests with a novelist who also wrote technical articles for a popular radio electronics magazine called "Wireless World" under the pen-name of "Cathode Ray". This is a letter he sent to the same magazine, under his own name, which was printed in the February 1945 issue, predicting the advent of the communications satellite.
