We've talked about these videos a while ago. Microsoft has since added a few more videos, each of them offering a detailed look at not only the new technologies but the potential applications for them. All of the presentations look at Avalon, Indigo, and other technologies to be featured in Longhorn.

Yes. What's the problem? Same-document references are resolved using the base URI in most browsers. (Only Lynx gets it right!) What does that mean? It means that in most browsers same-document links (like ) don't point to another location in the current document, but point to the document linked to in the base href. ?

As the new open-source implementations of the .NET platform take shape, developers targeting .NET face an extremely welcome challenge - creating applications that run on multiple platforms. As developers, we wanted to know what you can expect from each of these implementations. How are they alike? How are they different? What are their goals and problems? To help answer these questions, we contacted several key members of Ximian's Mono, Corel's Rotor and the Free Software Foundation's Portable .NET projects, and also Microsoft itself. To make the results comparable, we asked all the open-source representatives the same set of questions. Ok, here is what I have implemented to handle the four HTML extensions that Apple has made so far. I implemented Eric Meyer's default namespace proposal.

In HTML, in order for Safari or other Web Kit applications to recognize the new extensions, you must declare a default namespace on your root html element. This namespace's value at the moment is:

Feedback on the above namespace identifier is welcome, if you think there's a better choice. Note that in HTML this namespace support isn't real. The default namespace declaration is all that will be checked, and it will act as a global switch that will just turn on all the HTML extensions.

However, the benefit comes when you switch to real XML. In the XML implementation, the namespace is completely real and effectively maps to a new language, Apple Extended XHTML, that has all the functionality of XHTML plus the extensions. In other words, in XML you can declare the namespace for real, use it with prefixes, use it only on canvas tags to keep the rest of the doc pure XHTML, etc.

I have not yet committed this solution, because I want to see if this meets with public approval first. Please trackback with suggestions and/or amendments.
