Bin Ladin Determined To Strike in US - The Presidential Daily Briefing

Kevin Drum
: Aside from that, what really struck me was that the whole thing was so short — considerably shorter than your average op-ed column, in fact — and written at about a high school level. This is an intelligence briefing prepared at the request of the president of the United States and he was apparently satisfied with it? Eleven paragraphs of pabulum considerably less authoritative than an average article in Foreign Affairs ? Sheesh.

Corr ecting the Record. In meticulous detail the 9/11 commission's report found that the hijackers had repeatedly broken the law in entering the United States, that Mr. bin Laden may have micromanaged the attacks but did not pay for them, that intelligence agencies had considered the threat of suicide hijackings, and that Mr. Bush received an August 2001 briefing on evidence of continuing domestic terrorist threats from Al Qaeda.

Can someone ping this entry with a TrackBack? Let me know what (if any) error you get. A few folks have told me that my TB is broken and I seem to be getting way fewer TrackBacks that normal. I suspect it's related to my recent upgrade to MT 2.63 but am not sure where to begin debugging this yet. I will have to search around a bit in the morning and see if this is some sort of known...

Debian: Where should
we
we should go from
here?
06/17/2005 06:46 PM
Debian sarge has finally been released -- now what? If you ask me (and you didn't, but I'm going to tell you anyway), Debian should have two overarching priorities for the next release: 1. putting a timed release cycle in place, so what happened with sarge never happens again; and 2. keeping the growing family of Debian derivatives united around a common core -- namely, Debian itself. What's at stake? If we don't do something about both of these problems, actual and potential, Debian will be irrelevant by the time etch is out.

Not to touch on politics, but I found this particularly striking example of how Google News can reveal a dimension of 'news' that can be difficult to observe.

Iraqi first strike before the American
first strike?

Iraqi first strike before the American
first strike?
03/15/2003 04:09 AM
ABC news is reporting that the US is worried that Iraq may strike first before we can strike first. I don't wish any harm on the American troops overseas (or on the poor Iraqi soldiers either, for that matter), but the logic of the outrage about this escapes me. We are proclaiming our right to strike preemptively and unilaterally, where we see a threat that might appear in the future, and we are actively preparing to strike at Iraq. What logic allows us to be outraged if Iraq reacts to this threat by striking at the troops ringing her borders? Incidents like these are why the Europeans have concluded that Americans have gone off their rockers....
