Mondo Rescue LiveCD backup: a nugget of
gold
06/15/2004 05:13 AM
I received an email a few weeks ago following a column I wrote on backups. The reader said, "I'm looking for a way to back up (preferably image) my current Fedora install to CD-RW. Ideally, I guess what I'm looking for is 'bare-metal' disaster recovery -- i.e., boot up from CD, enter some command(s) and have my (mostly!) working Fedora install re-imaged back to my HD." I didn't, but I suspected I could find a LiveCD for this purpose. Sure enough, Mondo Rescue does everything the man asked for. The only drawback -- if there is one -- is that it's more geared for advanced users or system admins that it is for noobies.

The Auditor security collection is a live-system based on KNOPPIX. It provides tools for analyzing the security of a system. It features a menu structure that reflects the stages of a security check: foot-printing, analysis, scanning, wireless, brute-forcing, cracking. In addition to about 300 security tools, the collection includes background information regarding standard configuration and passwords, truly extensive word lists, and more mundane productivity tools.
Changes:
Some of the boot framebuffer pictures were removed, leaving only the kanotix bootsplash. The key layout selection was removed because KDE can switch layouts on the fly. All default Knoppix/Kanotix boot parameters now work. Sound card detection was reintroduced. The desktop was switched to a stripped KDE installation. A new background and menu structure were provided. New applications were included.

Adventures in wireless security: Why
home and corporate wireless LANs are
insecure

Adventures in wireless security: Why
home and corporate wireless LANs are
insecure
06/03/2004 03:44 AM
The meat of the article is: “…Wireless security recommendations: Change your system defaults – everyone knows them. Change the Admin and SNMP passwords. Change the IP network range. Also change the Server Set ID (SSID). The SSID is a unique identifier for your wireless hub/router. The default SSID is set in the factory is definitely not unique. Don’t broadcast the SSID. While you can change the default ID, that does little if your hub or router broadcasts that SSID. Enable Wireless Encryption. WEP or something similar can be compromised, but it makes it significantly more difficult to compromise your information. The larger the key length, the better. Enable Shared Key Authentication. The default Open System setting lets anyone connect to your network with very minimal effort. Change your SNMP Community String. Create a Community String like it is a strong password. Enable MAC Address Codes. Again, this makes it more difficult for a hacker to compromise your home network. Set Wireless LAN cards to Infrastructure Mode. Most cards have the default Ad Hoc mode, which is less secure. Don’t rely only on the broadband firewall. A firewall at your home’s Internet entry point is critical. However, you should still have personal firewalls on all computers on your network, in case something makes it through your home’s firewall or a hacker does make it onto your network.”

Meet Vernon Blake. Vernon Blake was a Systems Admin for the Alabama Department of Transportation, and it was 'well known' in his office that a certain supervisor spent far more time playing solitare on his computer than he did doing anything else. Inspired by a campaign to stop waste in Alabama government, Vernon installed a screen capture utility which took 717 screenshots (.pdf) over 7 months, documenting a clear pattern of non-work related use of the computer. The results? The supervisor was given a written repremand. Vernon Blake was fired.
